Learning English As A Second Language in Bangladesh

English is introduced to students in Bangladesh from the early years of primary education.It is
typically taught as a subject alongside Bengali and other subjects.It’s a compulsory subject
throughout the education system in Bangladesh.It is integrated into the curriculum from primary to
higher education levels.

Primary education system starts at the age of six and continues for five to six
years while the secondary education system continues for five years. In this both
Education systems,English is a mandatory subject and the students have to attend
exams on it.In secondary education system,the curriculum becomes advanced as
the students learn to analyze text,to write essays,engage in group discussions etc.

After secondary education system the students have the opportunities

to go through under higher education system,where English plays an
vital role.All the books of higher education are written in English.
Therefore,the students has no option but to learn English.
Giving presentation in English,making notes,academic writings all these are
included in higher education which helps a lot to have a good proficiency in English.

It’s a matter of sorrow that Bangladesh has a few well trained teachers and resources to learn English as a
second language. However,efforts are ongoing to improve the quality of English education system across all
levels.We must ensure that all the students have the proper opportunites to develop their proficiency in
English language.
