SUPERVISORS OF WOMEN
FORMER STATE
The WORLD is home to various countries, ethnic groups , races and people of different persuasions.
The symbol of the Cross and Staff over the World speaks directly to God’s design to provide salvation for His creation.
The Christian faith represented by the CROSS of Jesus and all His suffering leads the believer to the reality of Jesus who
carried the Cross. The STAFF is the Symbol of His Caring leadership. Our risen Lord demonstrated leadership through
His earthly existence, and He left on record the church’s role to care for humanity. It is therefore vital that we as saints
consider these two symbols sacred and precious in our relationship with Christ in faith.
The women of the Church Of God In Christ are therefore encouraged to carry their cross and provide a measure of care
and protection for souls over the world.
It is committed to supporting the leaders and church by implementing the set goals and objectives. It is our endeavor to
develop women and future leaders of godly character to meet the ever-changing challenges of today’s society by:
providing them with leadership skills through workshops, seminars, retreats, conferences and other developmental
activities.
Our goal is to empower women to develop wholesome friendship and to devote themselves to service, good works and to
keep the spirit of our motto: BETTER HOMES, BETTER SCHOOLS, BETTER CHURCHES, BETTER
COMMUNITIES, AND A BETTER WORLD!
The State of Alaska Department of Women was founded and established according to God’s Purpose and plan. The first
woman on the scene, in 1947 was the late Mother Josephine Stephens, followed by her sister, in 1949, Mother Emma
Avery. Mother Josephine Stephens moved to Alaska and started prayer in her home. Her faithfulness began to draw
others, and soon those gathered grew large enough to summons Bishop L. E. Tolliver (First Alaska Overseer (Bishop) to
Alaska to lead these newly converted people of God thus the rugged seedlings of the Church Of God In Christ were
planted.
In early territorial times, the initial spiritual and powerful training of Mother Ira Lee Cotton, the First Territory Mother
(State Supervisor), was unparallel. Under her instruction, women received a special blessing by partaking of her God-
given wisdom. Mother Cotton’s earnest commitment to prayer and the study of God’s word proved to be a solid example
by which the state of Alaska Women’s Department was established.
After the demise of Mother Cotton, the Women’s Department excelled under the loving guidance of Mother Lillie Mae
Howard as the Alaska State Supervisor 1984-1995. She was appointed by the Alaska Prelate, Bishop Charles D.
Williams. Mother Howard continually taught and admonished the women to pray and seek God’s face. Her gentle spirit,
and commitment to the standards set by her predecessor, Mother Cotton, is sincerely appreciated. Mother Howard, being
an avid writer established a resourceful asset to every saint’s library, the “Job Description & Other Helps” booklet that
gives information on how to operate in your church on the local, district, jurisdictional and national levels. She provides
the descriptions of every position in the State Women’s Department and examples on how to apply each function.
Mother Mable B. Gibbons, the current Supervisor for the Alaska Department of Women, steadfast in prayer and
sincere about the work appointed unto her and delegated to the women, has taken the Alaska Department of Women to
another level according to the grace of God bestowed upon her in the fall of 1995 when she was appointed. Mother
Gibbons implemented a program called, M.A.L.T. (Mentoring Auxiliary Leadership Training), that trains and mentors
every licensed woman and laywoman alike, about the Old and New Testament, Church of God in Christ history
including the life and history of our founder Bishop C.H. Mason, and pioneers of the Women’s Department as well as
how to speak and prepare a message for the people of God. As a member and secretary of the International Examination
Board for the International Women’s Department, Mother Gibbons works untiringly with Mother Willie Mae Rivers, the
General Supervisor and her staff in the International Women’s Department.
The Alaska Department of Women adopted the following Mission Statements and Goals of Operation that consists of
Boards, Units and Auxiliaries. This ministry relates to the Spiritual, physical and emotional needs of women and
children.
It is committed to supporting the leaders and church by implementing the set goals and objectives. It is their endeavor to
develop women and future leaders of godly character to meet the ever-changing challenges of today’s society by:
providing them with leadership skills through workshops, seminars, retreats, conferences and other developmental
activities.
Their goal is to empower women to develop wholesome friendships and to devote themselves to service, good works and
keep the spirit of the National Department of Women’s motto: BETTER HOMES, BETTER SCHOOLS, BETTER
COMMUNITIES, AND A BETTER WORLD.

Matthew 6:34
In Scripture, vision refers to one's ability to view our world and lives from God's perspective and clearly
discern His heart and plans. Our vision sharpens as we grow closer to Him and align our thoughts and actions
with His truth. It dulls when we move further from Him and become increasingly consumed with self-our sin,
desires, and concerns. Our vision is tainted by past hurts, pride, fears, sin, and deception, making it hard to
see God's hand and clearly discern His guidance.
There are three things I have learned during my struggles with worrying: It depletes your body physically,
emotionally, and spiritually.

Colossians 3:23 is her mission ...“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and

family of nine children. After graduating high school she moved to New York and attended

Her desire for a broader scope of life lead to her enlisting and serving seven years in the
United States Army. During her military tenure in Anchorage, Alaska she met and married Aaron Sanders and four days
later was relocated to Hawaii. While in Hawaii she attended a revival with friends, that very night she gave her life to
Jesus Christ and her journey stride of salvation began, resulting in her new membership with Peaceful Church of God in
Christ and later received the baptism of the Holy Ghost. A later move back to Alaska resulted in a Sanders Family
increase of four children, Aaron, Cedric, Marcus and Naomi, grandchildren and more.
Relocating back to Alaska she attended New Antioch COGIC and currently a member of Greater Friendly Temple
COGIC. She’s served under the pastoral ship of the late Bishop W.A. Webb, Superintendent Odell Townsend, Pastor

God. It helps us to recognize God ’s presence in our lives and the world around us. Without
spiritual vision, we risk being blind to the things of God and missing out on His blessings,

Former Alaskan Resident Supervisors
Mother Mable B. Gibbons and the Department of Women salute and honor Mothers in Zion
who were former residents of the State of Alaska who have been appointed Jurisdictional
Supervisors around the world. The Lord has blessed and favored these women to ascend to
this level of leadership within the Church Of God In Christ.
In 1988, the Alaska Department of Women, under the leadership of Supervisor Lillie Mae Howard, the title and position
of Assistant State Supervisor was officially adopted. The role of State Chairlady for the Department continued for
several years, with these women serving along side of the Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor aiding in planning, fund
raising and the overall women’s work. In 1998, the role of State Chairlady for the Department of Women was phased
out to better align with the International Women’s Department. We celebrate these women for their years of service
assisting Alaska’s State Supervisors in carrying out and fulfilling their duties and responsibilities.

This award is named in honor of the second in succession, State Supervisor of the Department of
Women of the Alaska Jurisdiction. The award is given annually during the State Women’s
Convention and is awarded to a sister that exhibits traits of Mother Lillie Mae Howard. Mother
Howard was a dedicated, and faithful, willing worker. Mother Howard embodied Ecclesiastes 9:10,
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor
knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. and Colossians 3:23, And whatsoever ye do,
do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men. There was no task too great or too small for Mother
Howard. Mother Howard labored untiredly in the local, district, and jurisdictional levels of the
Church, all for the advancement of the Kingdom of God. These distinguished women have been
recipients of the Mother Lillie Mae Howard Award for exhibiting the same qualities and
characteristics of Mother Howard.
