THE CONCEPTS OF GROUPS

What is a  When we speak for a group, it normally refers to an assemblage

Group? or a cluster of people. It is also comprised of two or more
people having something in common or a sense of emotional
solidarity, they interact with each other and are guided by a set
of norms. It can also temporary such as roaring crowd in a
basketball game or permanent such as race or ethnicity.

CHARACTERISTICS OF GROUPS
1. Interaction between members- Communication or interaction between members exist in the form of words, gestures,
and writing, music which can affect an influence or affect each other’s behaviour.
2. Belongingness- Members can defferentiate themeselves from nonmembers. This sets of belongisness sets them apart
from the others based from their set of ideals and standards.
3. Agreement in values and norms- Becoming a member of a group entails performing certain responsibilities and abiding
by a set of norms. They are also entitled to privileges as a result of being accepted in the group.
4. A definable structure within the group- Mmembers perform different roles. Some becomes leaders while others
perform specilaized roles so that society can function properly.
An individual has certain needs to meet and becoming One of the most common fears or
a part of a group could make him fulfil that. However, phobia for most people is the fear of
there are factors which influence formation or being alone. Even loners need
membership within a group. These are:
company. It is hard to imagine life
without any kind of group involvement.

1. Motives shared by individuals- people having a common cause, same interest, and same experiences and situation
form groups to be able to share these within their circles.

2. Size of a group- The concept of the size in a group, wheather it is a small or a large group cannot be measured in
quantities.
In some families for instance, having seven members can already be considered large while an organization with
five employees would just be enough to run its daily operations.

3. Type of group goals- Groups are also formed to achieve a common goal. In order to rich their goal, a group will block
structural forms which can hinder its achievement and find better ways in order to rich their target.

4. The kind of group cohesion- Group cohesion refers to the degree to which the members of a group have the ability to
function and interact together towards the persuit of their goals.
For instance: group cohesion is in a family where there is love and support given to each member compared to a
campany whose workers are on strike because their demands were not met.

TYPES OF SOCIAL GROUPS

 According to social Ties

“Coming together is a beginning; keeping
1. Primary groups- are those that are close-knit. They are typically small together is progress; working together is
scale, include intimate relationships, and are usually long lasting . success.

Examples of primary groups are: families, friends, peers, neighbors, -Henry Ford
classmates,sororities, fraternities, and church members.
These groups are marked by primary relationships in which communication is informal.

2. Secondary groups- in contrast secondary groups can be large or small and relationships are mostly impersonal, business
like, contractual, and usually short term. The communications is formal. Members of secondary groups ate less personal or
emotional than those of primary groups. Examples are: Organizations and workplace.

 According to Self-Identification

1. In- Groups- the feeling of “we” as against “they” explains how groups can be part of an in’-group and out-group
respectively. An in-group can refer to a family, friend, a class , a particular race or an organization.
2. Out-Groups- An out-group is a group in which we do not participate. It is that group toward which one has the feeling
of indifference, avoidance, dislike, antagonism, and even hatred. In plain simple word’s the in-group is our group while
the out-group is somebobdy else’s.

3. Reference Group- people may form opinions or judge their own behaviour against those of a reference group or a group
used as a standard for self-appraisals. The central aspect of a reference group is identigication rather than actual membership.
Example: is how a culinary student, a medical student, or a law student begins to observe and conform to the norms of
practicing chefs, doctors, or lawyers long before he actually enters that fiels.
 According to Organization

1. Informal group- it is unplanned, spontaneous, and has no explicit rules of membership.

Example: people who connects and form a subculture within the overall organization, policies, procedures are
not required to form such groups, they are formed merely based on the personal interactions and common interest.

2. Formal Group- it can also be referred to as social organizations.

Example: a school has a president, directress, principal, coordinators in the same manner as the campany has a
CEO, COO, President, and Vice President.

A Group is not just a collection of people. It is considered as a

REMEMBER set of two and more interacting individuals to achieve certain
goals and certain needs. Working as a team also helps one to
develop his/her personality and gives the confidence to perform
the task meticulously.

 We all typically belong to a variety of social groups: sports teams, academic clubs, church
groups, a class, the workplace, a family, or an entire nation.
 Sociologist saw this as a social groups because there is a system of social relationship between
members and that each individual member has a specific role or duty to be performed to achieve the
common goal.
