Lab Task-3: Earthwork and Road
Bloom’s taxonomy::
R: Remembering, U: Understanding, A: Applying, N: Analysing, E: Evaluating, C: Creating
1. Reduced levels of ground along the centre line of a proposed road from the chainage 0 to 200 E
m are given below. The formation level at the 40 m chainage is 102.75. The formation of road [4,5]
from the chainage 0 to 80 m has rising gradient of 1 in 40. The formation level has falling slope
of 1 in 100 from the chainage 40 m to 200 m. The formation width of the road at the top is 12.0
m and the side slope of banking are 2 :1.

Draw typical cross-section and prepare an estimate of the earthwork for the road at the rate of
3.52 per m2.
2. Work out the earthwork for road from the following data: E
(a) Formation width : 10 m [4,5]
(b) Embankment slope : 2:1
(c) Cutting slope = 1:1
(d) The formation has falling gradient of 1 in 200 from the chainage 0 to 150 m and falling
gradient of 1 in 120 m from the chainage 150 to 300 m.
(e) R. L. of formation at chainage at 0.00 level = 102.5 m
(f) R.L of the ground are as follows:
Chainage 0 30 60 90 120 150 180 210 240 270 300
(m)
Ground 101.70 105.50 101.95 101.80 101.90 101.85 101.90 101.55 101.20 101 100.6
R. L (m)
3. Prepare an estimate for renewing an old patchy and rough road with the following data: E
(i) The road is proposed to be renewed by providing one layer of 40 mm gauge stone ballast [4,5]
(12 cm loose compacted to 8 cm thickness) and two coats of surface painting.
(ii) The metaled width of the road is 4.0 m
(iii) Length of the road = 1 km
(iv) 1st coat- 12 mm gauge stone ballast at 0.015 m3/m2 surface area with bitumen at 2 kg/m2
surface coat.
(v) 2nd coat – 8 mm gauge stone ballast at 0.009 m3/m2 surface area with asphalt at 1.2 kg/m2
surface coat.

Assume other data and suitable rates.

1. Prepare an estimate of 30 m length of an earten dam, the cross section of which is shown in E
given figure. The general specification are as follows: [1,4,5]
(i) The hearting is of clayey earth.
(ii) The moorum is to be used as acsting materials.
(iii) The pitching is to be of dry rubble of average thickness 40 cm on the moorum bedding.
