A Grand Day In

NARRATOR
“The Date is Tuesday, March 7th, 1933, at 5:54 A.M.
A drunk man by the name of Chuck Henson, is stumbling alone down an
abandoned alleyway during the rain in the quiet darkness of New York
City.”

-Drunk Man mumbling, and walking, hiccuping

NARRATOR
“From The shadows, approaches an unknown man”

-Second set of footsteps approaching

- Gunshot, broken glass, body drops to floor

NARRATOR
“In an instant, the drunken man is shotton in cold blood. As his body drops
to the floor, the unknown man begins to loot his body taking everything of
value from his pockets. Including a priceless necklace. The unspoken man
then gathers himself and flees into the night.

It is now Thursday, March 9th, just two days following the man's murder.
Detective Philip Codsworth, A private investigator known for getting
himself into situations, is sitting in his office mid-day, reading a
newspaper of the day's events and talking to his dog .”

PHILIP CODSWORTH
“Everyday there's a new missing person or murder, I'm beginning to wonder
how this city can survive with all of its population going missing every
other hour. What do you think Buddy?”

- Dog Makes tired noise

“Hmm”

- Detective begins to type on his typewriter then the Phone begins to

ring

“Ughhh Damn Phone. Can’t a fella relax anymore….”

- Detective picks up the phone

“ Detective Codsworth Speaking”

MARY KEGLEY
“ Hello, is this Detective Codsworth?”

PHILIP CODSWORTH
“Yes… it is”

MARY KEGLEY
“My name is Mary Kegley. I'm calling in regards to the Chuck Henson murder.
Well you see, he was my Husband.”

PHILIP CODSWORTH
“Ma’am your husband's case is already being run by the PD, they’re still
actively looking for your husband's murderer and it’s only been two days.
Ma’am, there’s not much I can do.”

MARY KEGLEY
“Well yes, I understand that the police are searching for the killer. My
Husband is dead, and I accept that. But, When he was gunned down, the
killer stole something from him that is very much irreplaceable. A family
heirloom, a gold necklace that has been in his family for a lifetime. We
were planning on passing it on to our children, and that very much is a
problem now.”

PHILIP CODSWORTH
“I see, you want me to track down this necklace and return it to you so it
can continue to be passed down”

MARY KEGLEY
“Precisely detective”

PHILIP CODSWORTH
“Fine, consider it done, now let’s talk green”

NARRATOR
The P.I. and Miss Mary Kegley discuss a price and the Detective Codsworth
begins on his way. Codsworth sees fit to begin at the scene of the crime.
Philip arrives at the scene. The time: 7:16 P.M.

PHILIP CODSWORTH
“What a place to die. Face first, by the looks of the outline at least I would
assume.”

- The detective walks around

“Tire marks, somebody sped off. I’m willing to bet this has something to do
with Mr. Hensons murder. I’d better jot this down.

- The detective pulls out a notepad and a pen and begins to write, then
continues to walk around again.

“Oh great, just what I need, a pigeon walking all over the chalk outline,
making the P.D. think I'm tampering with their evidence. SCRAM BIRD!”

- The bird flies off, sound of glass

“Wait a minute, what’s that?”

NARRATOR
At this point, Detective Codsworth has just discovered a previously
unnoticed clue. On the other side of a fence lay broken glass shards from a
busted window with a hole roughly the size of a 38 Colt, the specific
bullet used in the gun that shot Henson as determined by the police. After
examining the area, Codsworth discovers that the busted window belongs to
the back of a local owned dry cleaners called “Henry's Dry Cleaning”, named
after the owner. Henry makes his way around and into the front entrance to
try and piece together more of this puzzle.

- Footsteps and walking into a door

PHILIP CODSWORTH
“Excuse me sir, Do you know where I could find….. Henry?”

HENRY SCHWARM
“Why sure, I’m Henry. Henry Schwarm. What can I do you for?”

PHILIP CODSWORTH
“I’m here regarding the Chuck Henson murder from just a few days ago, I’d
like to ask you some questions”

HENRY SCHWARM
“Oh, I'm sorry but I already told your police friends everything I know. I
stepped away from my store during the time of the incident. So I did not
see or hear anything”

PHILIP CODSWORTH
“Interesting.”

HENRY SCHWARM
“What's that?”
PHILIP CODSWORTH
“Well frankly, I’m beginning to suspect this was a two man job, and I have
reason to believe the armed gunman shot from the back of your store. Would
you happen to have a work log or anything I could examine?”

HENRY SCHWARM
“Shoot I’m sorry detective, but we don’t keep work logs here. Maybe I could
set up a time for you to come down and meet all my employees, but
unfortunately, we are awfully busy today. I hope this can wait for another
day”

PHILIP CODSWORTH
“Sure. Sure, it can wait. I’ll be around.”

NARRATOR
Detective Codsworth leaves the store, feeling unsatisfied, he makes his
way back towards the alley way, where he climbs the fence and makes his
way to the window. The window has a hole in it small enough for him to
barely squeeze his hand through. On the other side of the window, is
darkness, so Detective Codsworth strikes a match and carefully fits his
hand inside. After a short amount of time passes, he is able to see a note
with a phone number written down.

PHILIP CODSWORTH
“This is exactly the kind of thing I was hoping to find, Let’s see here (DE
7-5236). I’d better write that down and see who this is.
After writing down what he has discovered, Detective Codsworth then
begins to journey a distance away from the scene to find a payphone. After
finding one, he puts in the number to see who is on the other line.

- Philip ringing the spinner and waiting for an answer. Nobody

answers

“Sigh* no answer”

- The phone begins to ring

“Right on time”

- Phone ringing until Philip picks it up and answers

MARY KEGLEY
“Henry, is this you? I was beginning to think you would never call back.
You know the police have been in and out of this place nonstop the past few
days? Henry, listen, I know you know about the jewelry. If you bring it
back, I’m willing to pay you double. Henry? Are you there? Why aren’t you
speaking?”

- Philip hangs up the phone.

PHILIP CODSWORTH
“What have I gotten myself into… Just to be sure, I’d better check
something”

NARRATOR
Detective Philip Codsworth begins to head back to his office. The time is
now 9:24 P.M. As he rides the train, he ponders over what he has discovered
and what he will do next. When he reaches the building, he immediately
notices how he is the only person there. He gets in the elevator to go to
his floor.

- Elevator sounds. Very quiet, sound moving upward, ding and doors
open, person steps out. Rain and thunder in the background.

PHILIP CODSWORTH
“Well hopefully Buddy isn’t too mad at me”

- Opens door to office, footsteps

“Hey Buddy, I'm back. I just got to check something real quick and then
we’re headed out.”

- Footsteps, phone sounds, dialing

“Hello, telephone directory, what can I help you with tonight?

“Operator, can you help me trace this call?”

PHONE OPERATOR
“I sure can, What’s the number?”

PHILIP CODSWORTH
“DE 7-5236”

PHONE OPERATOR
“Let me see what I can do”

- Short pause from anything

“The number belongs to a Miss Mary Kegley Henson. Hope that helps”
PHILIP CODSWORTH

“It sure does”

- The Phone hangs up

“Buddy, I think this calls for a drink”

- Philip grabs a glass and a bottle and starts pouring himself a drink.
Thud from outside. Dog makes a low growl

“Yeah I heard that too.”

NARRATOR
Detective Codsworth then Turns off his lamp and grabs his gun

- Lampshade clicking off, desk drawer opens, sound of gun cocking.

Muffled Footsteps start approaching.
