Synthesis of magnesium hydroxide from Sea bittern.

Purpose:
To understand synthesis of ionic compounds based on solubility difference.
To understand analyzing technique of crystal structure by powder XRD.

Reactant: Sea bittern, ammonia, deionized water

Apparatus: 100ml beaker 250ml beaker, magnetic stirrer, magnetic stirring bar, pipet, Buchner
funnel, filter paper, aspirator, mortar, pH meter, X-ray diffractometer

Experiment
1) Put 50g of sea bittern into 250ml beaker with magnetic stirring bar.
2) Add 100 ml of 2 M NH4OH solution into the sea bittern while stirring and measure the pH.
Keep stirring for 1 h.
3) Stop stirring and measure the pH. And then filter the solution with aspirator.
4) Wash the solid with Deionized water. And dry it in oven.
5) Grain the dried solid into powder with mortar.
6) Analyze powder products by powder X-ray Diffraction.
