SAFETY GUIDELINES
What to Know
● Perform an experiment only when a teacher is around.
● Before your laboratory class, read the assigned activity or experiment and carefully understand the
directions. Plan and divide the work with your group mates.
● Work only on assigned activity or experiments.
● Study carefully operating instructions of equipment assigned to your group.
● Know the locations and operating instructions of fire extinguisher, safety shower, fire blanket and eye
wash.
What to Wear
● Always wear a laboratory gown to protect your skin and clothing from both biological and chemical
spillage.
● Wear safety gadgets provided by your teacher at all times. Goggles or other eye protection is a MUST
when working with corrosive chemicals.
● Keep long hair tied back.
● Use gloves when handling chemicals or hot objects.
● Use leather and closed shoes rather than open-toed shoes.
What to Do
● Clear laboratory tables of all unnecessary books, papers and other materials which are not needed in
the experiment.
● Clean your working area before and after each experiment.
● Wash your hands with soap and water before and after each experiment.
● Label and store reagents properly.
● Read labels on reagent bottles before using them.
● Use significant figures in recording data and in reporting the results of your calculations. ●
Label all your drawings.
● Always keep combustible materials or flammable materials away from the light sources. ●
Acids and alkalis spill on skin or clothing must be washed with plenty of water immediately. ●
Report any injuries, even minor ones, to your teacher immediately.
What Not to Do
● Do not eat or drink in the laboratory.
● Use of cell phones, MP3 and other gadgets are strictly prohibited.
● Avoid wearing jewelries while working in the laboratory.
● Do not taste or eat anything in the laboratory. Assume all chemicals to be poisonous.
● Never work alone in the laboratory.
● Never dissect a handheld specimen.
● Never use broken glassware. Report any broken glassware to your teacher.
● Do not use a piece of paper to light a burner or a candle.
● Never use open flames near flammable solvents, like alcohol.
● When heating a test tube, never point the open end toward people.

do hereby agree to follow all safety guidelines and procedures given therein. I will conduct
myself in a safe and conscientious manner in the laboratory. I will not perform any
unauthorized laboratory procedure. I understand that misbehavior in the laboratory or failure
to follow safe laboratory procedures could cause a serious accident. I further understand that
a violation of these guidelines could result in my NOT being allowed to participate in future
laboratory exercises.
