Designing Hook Experiences

Name: _________________________________________ Classroom: ___________________

Lesson Overview: How do you anticipate the children will explore with the materials? What do
you think they will do? What COULD happen?

The children will be able to notice how wind can affect water patterns.

Lesson Plan Objectives: what do I INTEND for the children to explore?

The children will be able to identify the natural force of wind and how it can affect water patterns
everywhere.

THE HOOK:
Roles/Responsibilities
● What are the CHILDREN doing? What is your explorable question? Ideally, children
should be able to loop back to this question in their exploration
○ How does blowing through a straw affect the water in the water table?

● What is the TEACHER doing? How are you asking children to engage with the explorable
question? Write 3 ways to ask: how; what; where)
○ HOW: how is the wind affecting the water?
○ WHAT: what is the water doing?
○ WHERE: where is the motion occurring
● How are you DOCUMENTING? What tools are you using for documenting the
experience?
○ Pictures
○ Notes/observations on paper
THE BAIT:
The NEW
● What is NEW about the experience? Is it the materials, the physical space, or
set-up of familiar materials?
The children have used the water table before, but have not used an outside object to
move the water that does not use their hands.

● Sketch it out–below sketch out what the experience will look like, highlighting the new
and the questions for each of the three experiences

EXPLORABLE QUESTION:
How does blowing through a straw affect the water in the water table?

Schemas anticipated:
Below: At least 3 ways to stage the environment to discover more. Include materials, location, and questions for each.
1. blowing through the 2. the water table is a 3. the toy rocks affect how
straws will simulate wind representation of bodies far the wind can take the
in the environment of water (ponds, lakes, water (there are rocks in
oceans, rivers) bodies of water)
does the amount of force you are
putting in the straw affect the how does the water move how do the stones/rocks affect
water movement? differently with the force of wind? the water movement when wind
is applied?
Reflection:

1. What part of this lesson experience went well?

a. The children did very well understanding the task and very much enjoyed this

experience.

2. What part of this lesson experience surprised you?

a. Some students angled the straws at different locations to see if the wind would

move the water differently.

b. The students noticed the rocks in the water blocking their wind, so they moved

to another area in the table.

3. If you could change anything, what would it be and why?

a. I may add some other materials such as toy animals into the water table so the

children can see how living things are affected by the wind

4. Do you feel the children engaged with the experience as you expected?

a. Yes. They liked it a lot and were very creative with their expressions.

5. Provide photos or documentation from your lesson implementation.

a. The pictures won’t upload right now, but I will put them in when it works!
