Title of report: Quantitative study of the Ethnic discrimination in the work place

Background reading.

What have you found out about the problem you are researching in your background
reading? Select information and quotes from at least two sources on weblearn, from
the SOURCES FOR REPORT folder in ASSESSMENT DETAILS (no news articles or
blogs please)

We should live in a country where every person, regardless of their ethnicity or

background, is able to fulfil their potential at work
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/

In 2015, 1 in 8 of the working age population were from a BME background, yet BME
individuals make up only 10% of the workforce and hold only 6% of top management
positions - https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/

The 2015 Race at Work report also highlighted that many ethnic minority employees
do not feel supported or valued by their managers. In the previous section we noted
that, in comparison to their White colleagues, having their job performance more
heavily criticised was one way in which ethnic minority employees experienced
racism. This impacted on some ethnic minority employees who felt an added pressure
to ensure that their work ‘was up to standard’ In the previous section, we have
highlighted that racism had become a routine/ reoccurring part of life at work for
some ethnic minority employees. Recent research has shown that repeated exposure
to racism has had negative long-term effects on the mental health of ethnic minority
people in the UK.

Discrimination on the

Mental Health of Ethnic Minorities in the United Kingdom’, American Journal of Public
Health, Volume106, Number 7, pp.1294-1300.

Aims

Write here what you want to find out. Keep it short and simple and don’t attempt to
solve the issue

This research aims to investigate the experiences of discrimination based on ethnicity

at the workplace. It aims to find if people feel discriminated because of their racial
background and if the current workplace encourages diversity.
Method

Write here details of how you carried out the research and who you interviewed

A man and a woman were interviewed and were asked 12 questions each. The
questions where rehearsed and reviewed in class before the interview was conducted.
The participants were both in their 30s. Both were British African ethnicity. Participant
A is a manager in a highstreet shop in Battersea. Participant B has been a bus driver
since 2018. Before the interview commenced, both participants agreed to be
interviewed and were guaranteed confidentiality.

Results

Select some interesting points here and organise by themes with headings that you
have chosen. Include direct quotations from your participants. 350 words minimum

Customers

Both participants have experienced horrible customers at their workplaces. For participant A,
an elderly woman shouted and screamed racist words at her because she did not approve a
wrong refund. Participant A became very upset and sad about the incident. She was in tears
by the hate she faced.

“I was in tears by the woman’s aggression and hate, it was very horrendous”,

Participant B also has experienced a racial discrimination at the workplace. This occurred
during the late hours when a group of drunk adults tried to get on the bus without paying.
They were refused and they immediately began making racist jokes about her. It continued
for almost 2 minutes before they got off the bus.

“it is that was unbearable notwithstanding the fact that my children were the same age as
them.”

Discussion. Answer the questions below:

What were the main findings of the research? Summarise in two or three sentences

Racial discrimination at workplaces has gotten worse the last couple of years. Most
victims are scared to act when they suffer ethnic discrimination.

How does this relate to what you found out in your background reading?

The research correlates with, 'I altered my personality to fit in at work'(2020) on ethnic
discrimination existing in the workplaces with some senior management being the
cause.
If you were going to do another research project on the same area, what would you
research next?

I am interested to research about gender pay gap. It has been in the news a lot and I want to
see if there have been any improvements.

Questions

1. Where do work and what’s your role?

2. How long have you had this job?
3. What do you like most about your job?
4. How did you respond to the discrimination?
5. Did you report the incident to the right authority?
6. Is your company providing support on preventing discrimination at the job?
7. Do you feel you have equal pay in yor workplace?
8. Has discrimination at your workplace increasing or decreasing after the UK left
EU?
9. What policies has your company put in place to promote diversity at your
workplace?
10. Is there any ethnic minority person in your management team?
11. Is there anything you would like to tell me regarding what we talked about?

Feedback

Write about 100 words on what you learned about writing your assessment – e.g.
planning, drafting, time management etc and how you improved your work based on
feedback.

Finding the participants for the interview was hard as this was a sensitive subject. The people
I interviewed had different schedule compared to mine hence it was difficult arranging a time
which best suits either of us.
I learnt from the articles I read and understood ways to tackle ethnic discrimination if I was to
face one in future. I had to practice emotional control before the interview so I do not get out
of control in if I hear something bizarre during the interview. I received feedback from my
tutor which aided me to ask the relevant questions during the interview.
