Hello, my name is Martin Mejia, and this is my research proposal on if Soccer Stands a Chance
in America

For as long as I can remember I have been infatuated with soccer. I truly don’t exaggerate when I
say I live and breathe the sport. I think about it hundreds of times a day. I am not alone in my
madness however. In fact,

The majority of the world sees soccer as its most favored sport as you can see here. However,
one of the largest countries missing out on this obsession is the United States. As someone who
has lived in the US all my life and has watched soccer all my life, I am dumbfounded by how
small the sport is here compared to other places. This begs the question:

Does Soccer Stand a Chance In The Professional American Sports Market? The goal of the
research project would be to measure this using Finances, Viewership, and Players of the game.
We would measure what the numbers were in the past, are in the present, and what they are on
track to be in the future.

Firstly, I would survey people at a variety of locations including at a soccer field/game, a mall,
and at another sports event. This way I can hear how people view soccer and their knowledge of
it from several different viewpoints. I would ask questions like what their overall opinion of the
game is, if they had ever played soccer, and what their favorite sport is.
Slide 7:
Additionally, I would conduct archival research by looking at past research into this topic, as
well as compare and contrast the overall popularity of soccer in the past to what it is now. I
would also look at growth patterns of other American sports to see what their growth looked like.

I would also like to conduct an overall genre analysis of the functions of Soccer when compared
to other sports. Sports as a whole I feel could be classified as a genre of entertainment, and
seeing it as such can help give a “recognizable pattern”. This would all allow me to get more
perspective on how big the gap between soccer and other sports are and if the sport has a realistic
possibility of catching up.
Slide 9:
I would present these findings in a spoken presentation with the help of a presentational aid, such
as a powerpoint. I feel that the best way to showcase my findings would be to hear it from
someone who is a fan of the sport, that being myself.
Slide 10:
This would be my rough timeline of research. I don’t anticipate the research taking all too long
and believe I could complete it in under 2 months.
