Social Psychology Agression
Social Psychology Agression
OF AGGRESSION
Thoroughly revised and updated, this third edition offers a comprehensive and up-to-date over-
view of the social psychology of aggression, covering all the relevant major theories, individual
differences, situational factors, and applied contexts.
Understanding the causes, forms, and consequences of aggression and violence is critical for
dealing with these harmful forms of social behaviour. Addressing a range of sub-topics, the first
part deals with the definition and measurement of aggression, presents major theories, examines
the development of aggression and discusses individual and gender differences in aggressive behav-
iour. It covers the role of situational factors in eliciting aggression and the impact of exposure to
violence in the media. The second part examines specific forms and manifestations of aggression,
including chapters on aggression in everyday contexts and in the family, sexual aggression,
intergroup aggression, and terrorism. The new edition also includes additional coverage of gender
differences, gun violence, and terrorism, to reflect the latest research developments in the field.
Also discussing strategies for reducing and preventing aggression, this book is essential reading
for students and researchers in psychology and related disciplines, as well as practitioners and
policy makers.
Barbara Krahé is Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Potsdam, Germany. She was
awarded the German Psychology Prize for her work on aggression in 2015 and has served as
President of the International Society for Research on Aggression.
“I have been studying the origins of aggressive behavior for several decades
and am so pleased to see this book available as a resource to scholars,
students, and families. It is so well researched and hits on the topics
most important to our society. The author is at the top of her field and
it truly shows in this text. A definite must read for anyone interested in
understanding and preventing aggressive behavior.” –Professor Sarah
M. Coyne, Brigham Young University, U.S.
“Professor Krahé has done it again! This third edition of The Social
Psychology of Aggression captures the latest advances in our understanding
of human aggression, and integrates these advances with knowledge from
decades past. It is very well- organized and well- written, and therefore
easy to understand. Students of human aggression and violence—from
undergraduates to Ph.D. professionals—will find it invaluable as a resource
and a joy to read.” –Distinguished Professor Craig A. Anderson, Iowa State
University, U.S.
“The third edition builds upon two previous excellent surveys of social
psychological research on aggression, and its applications to the real-
life problems that human aggression causes. As before, the strengths are
Barbara Krahé’s clear exposition of her broad and detailed knowledge of
the academic research, and how it can generate solutions to real-world
problems.” –Emeritus Professor John Archer, University of Central
Lancashire, U.K.

Preface to the third edition
In the two decades since the first edition of this book was published, the
world has changed dramatically, and many of these changes are related
to aggression. Millions of people have had to flee from their homes and
livelihoods as a result of violent conflict, terrorist attacks have caused an
unprecedented number of deaths, mass shootings have shocked the world,
and hate speech in digital media has almost become commonplace. At
the same time, great progress has been made across many areas of psycho-
logical research in studying aggressive behaviour in its different forms and
promoting the understanding of its causes and consequences. Thus, the
time has come for an updated review of what we know about aggressive
behaviour based on the current state of knowledge in social psychology.
For this third edition, all chapters were thoroughly revised, with lots of
new content added, and readers will note that the reference list consists pre-
dominantly of sources that came out in the last ten years, after work on the
second edition had been completed. Preference was given to meta-analyses
and systematic reviews over a discussion of individual studies. The chapter
structure has remained largely unchanged, with a few exceptions: Research
on the development of aggression and on individual differences in
aggression, formerly discussed in one chapter, is now presented in two sep-
arate and extended chapters (Chapters 3 and 4). A new section on the avail-
ability of firearms has been added to the discussion of situational factors
promoting aggression in Chapter 5. An updated selection of key texts for
further reading is offered at the end of each chapter, followed by a list of
“tasks to do” to prompt readers to go beyond the contents presented in the
text and embark on their own investigations of key aspects of aggression
related to life in their part of the world.

The latest report on the “Global Burden of Armed Violence” issued by the
Geneva Declaration on Armed Violence and Development estimated that
between 2007 and 2012, 377,000 people died each year around the world as
the result of intentional homicide. In addition, 70,000 deaths occurred as a
direct result of armed conflict (Geneva Declaration on Armed Violence and
Development, 2015). These figures are assumed to be conservative estimates
because many countries do not have reliable incidence reporting systems
and are likely to underreport violent deaths. The number of fatalities from
violent action, shocking as it is, represents only the tip of the iceberg as far
as the scale of aggression worldwide is concerned. Another global report,
the “Global Status Report on Violence Prevention” published by the World
Health Organization (2014), presented data on the prevalence of various
forms of non-fatal interpersonal violence and concluded that “women, chil-
dren and elderly people bear the burden of the non-fatal consequences of
physical, sexual and psychological abuse” (p. 13). In 2020, the Global Status
Report on Preventing Violence against Children estimated that one in two
children between the ages of 2 and 17 years worldwide experience violence
each year, which includes physical and psychological abuse by caregivers,
exposure to intimate partner violence in their family, sexual abuse, bullying
by peers, and homicide (World Health Organization, 2020).
Although the focus of the research presented in this volume will be
on the social and psychological costs, it is important to recognise that
aggression and violence also incur heavy material costs for societies in
different domains, such as losses in gross domestic product or overall work
productivity, and expenses for health care and criminal justice systems.
Hoeffler (2017) presented a calculation of the material cost of violence for
societies in different world regions for the year 2013, applying different
measures of cost. One metric by which costs can be compared across
