Console Modules, Jumper Preparation For Editin.. 718 SECTION 1 INTRODUCTION 1.4 GENERAL ‘The MXP-2900 Series of consoles succeeds the highly regarded MXP-2000 Series, incorporating many additions and enhancements which provide greater operational flexibility and a higher level of performance. In addition, through improved circuit design and application, the crosstalk and noise specifications are greatly improved. Each console is assembled in a frame of simple construc- tion which combines strength and rigidity with ‘comparatively low mass. The use of ribbon hamesses is minimized, most interconnections being made by means of printed circuits. This arrangement enhances reliability and repeatability of performance, and offers an additional ‘benefit in that it allows any module to be mounted in any slo, thereby simplifying ease of configuration and off-the- shelf customization All ofthe audio switches and connectors inthe consoles have precious metal contacts, and the audio potentiometers, ‘and Faders are conductive plastic types. These factors further improve console reliability and longevity. The audio circuit design incorporates many novel features ‘and innovations. Plug-in modules and specially designed Inybrid devices have been used so as to improve reliability and allow greater ease of service while achieving the necessary packaging density. In addition, jumpers within the modules provide the user with a wide selection of possible logic and signal flow arrangements. Power for the consoles is provided from a fan-cooled, free- standing power supply. No switching regulators are used in these supplies, ths resulting in very low mechanical and electrical noise levels. Farthermore, conservative power supply ratings ensure low operating temperatures. ‘The MXP-2900 console is available in 16-channel (Figure 1-1), ‘26-chanmnel and 36-channel versions, and has applications in radio, recording, film, and television production/post- production environments. For television applications, two integrated parallel editor interface options are offered. Figure 1-1. MXP-2916 Console 4.2 CONSOLE FEATURES ‘The major console features include: + Choice between transformer balanced or electronically Dalanced inputs + Choice between microphone or line level inputs + Three-Band Equalizers with sweepable mid-frequency + Separate input gain controls on mono Input module + Built-in phantom power for microphones + Ideal for video editing with SONY BVE-900/9000 Editors, + Adjustable depth of fade under editor control + Separate edit previews for left and right channels + In-place SOLO (PREVIEW) operation + Optional Automatic “Fader down” PFL + Editor control of Audio groups and VCA groups + Accommodates mono or stereo inputs + Global editor bypass function + ‘Three auxiliary Sends, two mono and one stereo + Selectable direct output from each channel + Built-in alignmenviest oscillator + Full Control Room and Studio monitoring 1.3 CONSOLE CONFIGURATIONS ‘The three different frames in the MXP-2900 Series are the 20-slo,30-slot and 40 slot models, these definitions indicate ‘the number of slots available for plug-in module insertion. AAllof these models are available with VU meters or with PPM meters, as required, ‘Since three slots in any frame must be reserved for mandatory functions, and a fourth slot is allocated for the Dynamics ‘module, the 20-slot console can accommodate up to 16 channel (input, Stereo Input or Group) modules, this console being designated MXP-2916, Similarly, the 30-slot version ‘can accommodate up to 26 channel modules and the 40-slot version accommodates up to 36 channel modules, these being designated MXP-2926 and MXP-2936 respectively. It should be noted that, where the Dynamics module is not ‘used in these consoles, an additional channel most can be installed init place. ‘As well as there being three different frame sizes, the available plug-in modules offer a high degree of flexibility when defining console requirements, the only restriction ‘being that provision MUST be made for the mandatory ‘Monitor, Master and Communications functions. Of additional advantage isthe fact that any module can be installed in any location in the frame, This provides for easy off-the-shelf customization which allows the user to configure the console in the manner that best suits his needs and working habits, 1.8.1 System Modules Inall three console versions, the mandatory functions are provided by the Monitor, Master and Communications ‘modules. As well as the mandatory modules, four different channel module types are available, these being used for input and grouping functions. If required, signal processing functions (compression, limiting, etc.) can be provided by the Dynamics module. ‘Table 1-1 summarizes the various different modules used in ‘MXP.2900 Series consoles. MXP-2916 Configuration 1.3.2 MXP-2916 Consoles ‘The two 16-Channel console frames are designated MXP-2916 ancl MXP-2916P, Both of these frames have 20- ‘module capability, and they differ only in their metering arrangements, the MXP-2916 having Volume Unit (VU) meters and the MXP-2916P having Peak Program (PPM) ‘meters conforming to BBC specification BS 4297. In both frames, these six meters are mounted in a separate Meter Housing, together wit five bar-graph monitors for Sends and PPL, six status annunciators, a six-digit Clock/Counter and the PFL speaker. The Meter Housing is illustrated in Figure 1-2. ‘Three of the frame’s twenty slots are taken up by the mandatory Monitor, Master and Communications ‘modules, and a fourth slot is available for the Dynamics module. The sixteen remaining slots can be filled with any ‘combination of Input, Stereo Input, and Group modules that meets the user's requirements. It should be noted that, ‘where Group modules are to be used, a total of four of, these modules must be installed, It is again stressed that, where no Dynamics module is installed, the vacant slot can be filled with an additional cchanne] module, Table 1-2 summarizes the MXP-2916/MXP-2916P console configuration, 1.3.3 MXP-2926 and MXP-2936 Consoles ‘The 30-slot consoles MXP-2926 and MXP-2926P are extended versions of the MXP-2916 and MXP-2916P_ which can accommodate a total of 26 channet modules. ‘These consoles can be fitted with any desired combination of channel modules, providing that the mandatory Master, Figure 1-2. Meter Housing 13 ‘Monitor and Communications modules ae included. An added feature of the MXP-2926, however, is that provision is made forthe inclusion of two (2) Dynamics modules, ‘Where a second Dynamies module is installed, certain jumpers are removed from the main frame, as will be shown in Section 2. The first Dynamics module is installed in any ‘one of locations 1 through 10, and is used to control up to four channel modules within those locations. Similarly, the second Dynamics module is installed in any of the locations 11 through 30 and controls up to four channel modules within those locations, ‘The MXP-2936 and MXP-2936P consoles differ from. MXP-2926 and MXP-2926P only in that they can. accommodate up to 36 channel modules, being similar in all ‘other respects. Where two Dynamics modules are installed, ‘one is inserted into the left half ofthe console (locations 1 through 20) and the other is inserted inthe right half. Each Dynamics module then is used to control up to four channel modules in its own half of the console. 1.4 CONSOLE MODULES ‘The following paragraphs describe all ofthe various system smodiolesilostrated in Figure 1-3. 1.4.1 Mandatory Modules As already has been stated, the Master, Monitor and ‘Communications functions are mandatory to console ‘operation. These functions are performed by the appropriately named Master, Monitor and Communications ‘modules, which are described separately in paragraphs 1A. through 14.1.3 1.4.1.1 Master Module MXBK-2908 ‘The Master module (SMM) provides all ofthe master controls for the console’s stereo output (Mix A).
