Its that time of the year. Its
time for the eighth annual Sun
newspapers Deck the Paws and
Help a Collie holiday drive to aid
area animal shelters and rescue
groups.
And, again this year, we need
your help. More specifically, the
animals in the shelters need your
help.
This year, the drive will run
from the week of Nov. 28 through
Dec. 16.
As mentioned, we started this
effort way back in 2004. That year,
we had only a few drop spots, and
we collected a couple of carloads
of supplies.
All of that has changed. In re-
cent years, we have had 20-30
drop spots and have been able to
deliver about 25-30 carloads of
supplies to the shelters every hol-
iday season.
The animals in these shelters
are in a tough spot. Our goal al-
ways has been to lighten the bur-
den shelters and rescue groups
have to keep the animals fed and
comfortable. When the shelters
receive basics, such as food, blan-
kets and litter, they save money.
Thats money that can go toward
helping to find animals a perma-
nent home.
Want to help? Heres how it all
works:
Right now, we need to build a
list of drop spots. We need places
where people can go to drop off
food, cat litter, cleaning supplies
and everything else our local ani-
mal shelters need. If you dont
mind people showing up at your
door and dropping 40-pound bags
of dog food on your floor, we need
to hear from you.
In a couple of weeks, we will
publish a list of drop spots in our
newspapers and online. People
then will read the list, gather sup-
plies and take them to a drop
spot.
After that, the supplies are
picked up and taken to a shelter.
It all starts with the drop spots.
The more spots we have, the
more supplies we collect. More
drop spots mean a brighter holi-
day season for shelter animals.
If you want to be a drop spot,
or if you have questions, please
send an email to
alan@elauwit.com. Please put An-
imal Shelter Drive in the subject
line.

The Moorestown Sun
Get ready for liquor at the
Moorestown Mall. Township vot-
ers overwhelmingly passed both
referendum questions last week
to allow liquor to be sold in the
mall.
Voters approved the first refer-
endum question the allowance
of liquor licenses to be sold in
the township by an unofficial
count of 4,138 to 2,750, according
to township representatives.
Voters approved the second
referendum question restrict-
ing the sale of liquor licenses to
fine dining establishments at the
Moorestown Mall by an unoffi-
cial count of 3,750 to 2,876 accord-
ing to the township.
It was a complete turnaround
from the last time Moorestown
residents had a chance to vote on
the allowance of liquor. In 2007,
voters overwhelmingly defeated
the sale of liquor licenses by
more than 2,000 votes.
This time around representa-
tives from the Pennsylvania Real
Estate Investment Trust which
owns the Moorestown Mall
campaigned vigorously since the
summer to garner votes. In Sep-
tember, PREIT President Joe
Coradino said that if the referen-
dums were passed, PREIT would
purchase four of the possible six
liquor licenses at a price of $1
million each for a total of $4 mil-
lion.
Coradino stood by the promise
after the victory.
We are planning on deliver-
ing on the promises that we
made, he said. We will be pur-
chasing four licenses at $1 mil-
lion each.
Coradino said PREIT repre-
sentatives will also be meeting
with chef Marc Vetri to discuss
the possibility of the chef open-
ing up a restaurant at the mall in
the future. Vetri had signed a let-
ter of interest with PREIT with
the caveat that the referendums
pass.
Coradino estimated that
liquor could be served at fine
dining establishments at the
mall by August. Presently,
Coradino said PREIT would
begin construction of a new, 12-
screen movie theater at the mall.
I would say probably the ear-
liest would be between August to
September in 2012. Probably
somewhere between August and
October youll start to see restau-
rants open, he said. Id love to
do things faster, but you have to
negotiate a lease, create con-
struction plans, go through sev-

2 THE MOORESTOWN SUN NOVEMBER 16-22, 2011
The 2011 season is now com-
plete. We proved to have the best
number two team in the state, sec-
ond only to Haddonfield in the CP
Cup, to Haddonfield in the
strongest classic field ever, and
second in the Tournament of
Champions to Millburn.
The final record stands at 27-4,
with three losses to Haddonfield
and one to Millburn.
In the 27 wins, the varsity play-
ers lost only three individual
points. The girls practiced hard,
competed well and supported one
another all the way. A team re-
flects its leaders, and seniors
Rachel Bass, Lauren Culbertson,
Kelsey Ham and Sarah Kim were
excellent in that regard. Credit
should also go to Coaches Call
and Hughes both of whom went
far above and beyond the norm
and who played critical roles in
the teams result.
The highlight of the past week
was our sweeping the Burlington
County Open, including Friends
and the four Lenape schools. Our
girls won each fight convincingly,
losing only one set in the entire
event.
For those who came to matches
and/or gave support in other
ways, thank you. Enjoy what re-
mains of the fall.

Special to The Sun
On Monday, Nov. 21, the
Moorestown Home and School
Association will be holding its an-
nual turkey and pie drive. A
Thanksgiving tradition, the drive
provides holiday meals for local
needy families.
Last year more than 150 com-
plete Thanksgiving meals were
collected and boxed by
Moorestown students. Volunteer
students and parents assemble
the meals, which includes stuff-
ing, gravy, cranberry sauce, and
vegetables.
All of the meals along with
frozen turkeys and store bought
pies go to local families in
Moorestown while the remainder
goes to Family Services of
Burlington County as well the
Live Civilly Food Bank in
Moorestown.
The home and school associa-
tion will be accepting frozen
turkeys at Maple-Dawson Park
(across from Baker School) on
Nov. 21, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., the
Upper Elementary School from 7
a.m. to 2 p.m. and the William
Allen Middle School from 7 to 11
a.m.
They will be accepting non-
frozen store bought pies as well as
any nonperishable items needed
to complete the meals.
The meals needed for
Moorestown families will in-
crease this year due to the econo-
my. Through the generous dona-
tions of the community, the
Moorestown Home and School
Association will again be able to
share the traditional meal with
area families for Thanksgiving.
For any questions about how
you can be part of this tradition,

eral phases and its hard to get
things done quickly. Also, no-
body wants to open up in July to
a market that wont be there.
He pointed to PREITs deci-
sion to limit the sale of liquor to
the mall as one of the biggest fac-
tors to sway public opinion on
liquor licenses.
Keeping liquor sales away
from Main Street was a big point
of concern for voters in 2007, he
said.
In spite of some of the criti-
cism by the opposition, we did
get out into the community and
deliver our message between
town hall calls, presentations at
the Moorestown Business Asso-
ciation and the Rotary. We got
our message out to the people
and I think at the end of the day
we had a fabulous grassroots
team who did a great amount of
work. The team was led by Seth
Broder, who is still taking a lot of
heat, he said. The icing on the
cake was the change in economic
circumstances. In 2007 we were
all walking around and whistling
about how great things were, but
not a year later the bottom fell
out of the economy. It swayed
opinions.
The referendums survived a
lawsuit filed earlier in the sum-
mer by a Moorestown resident
and lawyer who sought to bar
them from the November general
election ballots.
William Cox submitted a law-
suit claiming that PREIT did not
wait the necessary five years to
resubmit a referendum question
to be placed on the ballot.
Judge Ronald Bookbinder
ruled in favor of the defendants,
citing that the 2011 referendum
questions on the ballot were con-
sistent with previous decisions
put forth by the legislature and
appellate divisions.
Bookbinder said that if he
ruled otherwise, he would be
overruling the legislature and
appellate division, which include
former Gov. Alfred E. Driscoll.
Cox appealed the decision, but
it was upheld by the appellate di-
vision.

T
hat Gov. Christie and the New
Jersey Education Association
dont see eye-to-eye on much of
anything is no secret. But, last week,
there was an encouraging sign from
the union.
The Associated Press reported that,
on the eve of the unions convention in
Atlantic City, it tossed out a few ideas
for reform. Thats a promising sign, as,
in the past, the union either has en-
trenched itself as an opponent to re-
form and change or has done a really
awful job of getting the word out about
what proposals it would support.
The result is that, for many, the per-
ception of the union is that it clings to
tenure to protect incompetent teach-
ers, is out of touch with todays eco-
nomic realities and is dedicated to pro-
tecting a status quo that no longer is
acceptable. Were not saying that per-
ception is right, but its a perception
that the NJEA really should address.
And last week, it did. Sort of.
According to the AP, the union fa-
vors making teachers eligible for
tenure after four years, instead of the
current three years. In the general
scope of things, thats a small conces-
sion, but a concession nonetheless,
and perhaps something that can be
used as a building block.
The group also called for requiring
full-day kindergarten and, no surprise
here, opposed using public funds to
pay for private education.
The NJEA would be well served to
acknowledge and then remedy the be-
lief of many that it has been tone-deaf
to the economic devastation that has
decimated many in the private sector.
It should do more to become a partner,
or to show that it is a partner, with tax-
payers and the communities they
serve.
Last weeks plans are a step in that
direction.
Heres a thought...
Teachers union offers some ideas of its own
NJEA ideas
Do you think that last weeks ideas
released by the NJEA will have an
impact on education?

Liquor, Paterno, ballots and trouble
Welcome to the
Dark Side, Moorestown
On Election Night, I saw something I
thought I would never see. As I was brows-
ing our website, monitoring the coverage
of yesterdays local elections, I was
stunned to discover that one town in par-
ticular had done something absolutely
shocking. Moorestown, the Quaker town
with roots dating back to the late 1600s, vol-
untarily decided to enter hell.
By a 60 percent to 40 percent tally,
Moorestown voters passed a referendum
that will allow liquor sales in the township,
albeit with restrictions. Liquor will only be
permitted at fine-dining restaurants at
the Moorestown Mall.
What happened to purity? What hap-
pened to values? What happened to tradi-
tion?
Ah, the good ole' days!
Moorestowns dry town status dates
back to 1915, when the township first
banned the sale liquor. And when Prohibi-
tion was lifted in 1933, the town decided it
wouldnt join the progressives; it would re-
main left in the past.
As the world progressed, Moorestown
held firm, staying true to its roots. Estab-
lishments of ill repute started popping up
on every border of town, with PJ Wheli-
hans and the Iron Hill Brewery in Maple
Shade within a stones throw of historic,
Best Place to Live Moorestown.
Over time, though, it seems the lure of
the nearby sale of liquor started creeping
into good ole Moorestown by osmosis. In
2007, some hipster youngins tried to pass a
liquor referendum, but that was shot down
quickly much like similar votes in 1935
and 1953. But only four years later, after
some serious legal debate, the referendum
appeared on the ballot again, and this time,
it passed.
Evil Mr. Liquor has made its way into
Moorestown now, and theres nothing that
can stop it.
Tim Ronaldson
Cinnaminsons ballot included
man who wasnt running
A 23-year-old college student had his
name on the recent ballot for Cinnamin-
sons township committee, even though he
isnt running. Hasnt been for months.
Technically, Austin DArpino never even
finished the paperwork for it, the non-can-
didate told Cinnaminson Patch.
Though DArpino had filed last spring to
run with Independent Scott Lunn, the
county clerk eventually contacted him to
say his paperwork was incomplete.
By then, DArpino had decided not to
run anyway. So he just dropped it, and he
figured that was that.
When ballots arrived in Cinnaminson
homes last week, there DArpino was, list-
ed under Lunn for the Accountability and
Civility party. By then his name could not
be removed, absentee ballots already hav-
ing gone out.

The Moorestown Police De-
partment is investigating three
residential burglaries that oc-
curred in the Golfview Road and
Park Drive area since Oct. 19.
The timing on the burglaries
ranges from during the day,
evening, to nighttime.
The burglars have been tar-
geting jewelry and flatware that
is hard to trace and easily sold
for scrap value.
On Oct. 19, residents returned
to a home in the 700 block of
Golfview Road after being at
work and school during the day
to find forced entry through a
rear basement window.
Jewelry was taken and a par-
cel post delivery was missing
from the front step.
On Oct. 31 residents returned
home in the 800 Block of
Golfview Road after being out
with their grandchildren from
5:15 to 8 p.m. to find forced entry
through a smashed rear slider
window. Jewelry and flatware
were taken.
Both of the above residences
back up to the Moorestown Field
Club Golf Course
On Nov. 2, during the latest
burglary occurring in the 300
block of Park Drive at approxi-
mately 11:15 p.m., police re-
sponded to a burglar alarm and
found that entry was gained by
smashing out a rear window.
The residents audible bur-
glar alarm deterred the bur-
glar(s) from completing the
crime.
The resident was not home at
the time.
Residents are urged to be vigi-
lant reporting any suspicious
activity to the police department
without delay by calling 234-
8300.
Crime prevention tips are
available on the township web-
site under the police tab.

Moorestown Township repre-
sentatives said that the New Jer-
sey Department of Community
Affairs has announced that the
Low Income Home Energy Assis-
tance Program (LIHEAP) is now
accepting applications for the up-
coming heating season, which
runs now through April 30.
The DCA administers this fed-
eral program, which provides
low-income households with
money to help pay their heating
bills and makes provisions for
emergency heating system servic-
es and emergency fuel assistance.
The application can also be used
to apply for the Universal Service
Fund Program (USF), which is a
state-funded initiative to help
make natural gas and electric
heating bills more affordable for
low-income households.
During these tough economic
times, many New Jersey house-
holds are still struggling to pay
their bills. They shouldnt have to
make a choice over whether to
pay their heating bill or some
other necessity, now that winter
has arrived, said Gov. Christie.
If heating is a concern this win-
ter, families should take advan-
tage of this invaluable program
and submit their applications as
soon as possible.
To be eligible for LIHEAP bene-
fits, a household must be respon-
sible for home heating, either di-
rectly or included in the rent, and
have a gross income at or below
200 percent of the federal poverty
level.
To be eligible for USF benefits,
a household must have a gross in-
come at or below 175 percent of
the federal poverty level, and pay
more than 3 percent of its annual
income for electric or natural gas.
If a household has electric heat, it
must spend more than 6 percent
of its annual income on electrici-
ty to be eligible. Assistance to-
ward heating costs depends on in-
come, household size, fuel type,
and heating region.
To learn how to apply for LI-
HEAP, go to
www.state.nj.us/dca/divisions/dhcr
/offices/hea.html or call 1-800-510-
3102. Households should contact
the authorized local community
action agency or organization in
their area, listed at
www.nj.gov/dca/divisions/dhcr/of-
fices/localagencies.html on the
DCA website. For persons age 60
or older, or who are disabled, ap-
plications may be received and re-
turned by mail.

The Moorestown Sun
Theres one in New York, one
in New Hampshire, and one soon
to be built in Connecticut, so
why isnt there one in Washing-
ton, D.C.? Thats what
Moorestown resident Judith
Young, former president of the
Gold Star Mothers, and U.S. Rep.
Jon Runyan, R-N.J., want to find
out.
Runyan and Young travelled
to Washington, D.C., earlier this
month to testify before the Natu-
ral Resources Subcommittee on
National Parks, Forests and Pub-
lic Lands.
The hearing covered multiple
pieces of legislation, including
Runyans bill, H.R. 1980, the Gold
Star National Monument Act of
2011, to establish a Gold Star
Mothers National Monument in
or around Washington.
Judith Young has tirelessly
led the charge for a national
monument to honor Gold Star
Mothers, Runyan said. It is
only right that she was invited to
testify before the subcommittee
on national parks, forests and
public lands. Gold Star Mothers
honor the mothers of our fallen
war fighters.
American Gold Star Mothers,
Inc., is an organization of
women who have lost either a
son or daughter in service of our
country.
Young was a past president of
the organization from 2005 to
2006, she said. Her son Jeff
Young was killed in action on
Oct. 23, 1983 while serving in
Beirut as a Marine Corps ser-
geant.
A park in the township was re-
named as the Jeff Young Memo-
rial Park in his honor.
A representative from Run-
yans office, Andrew Fasoli, said
he was confident the measure
would successfully move out of
the subcommittee.
Young, who has been trying to
have a monument built in D.C.
since 2007, was more even keeled
on the future of the monument.
The group ran up against
some opposition, she said, but
she was confident that the speed
bumps could be smoothed over.
Young said her group doesnt
want the monument built on the
National Mall, which several
members of the opposition had
originally thought.
Its much more difficult to pe-
tition for the construction of a
monument on the mall, she said.
I think there are a few things
we can iron out here and work
out so we can get this through. I
really need to get this through
this time, because each attempt
takes up so much time, Young
said. Were also working on
pitching this to a few senators to
try and introduce it to the sen-
ate. I think once we get past this
well be alright.
Young has successfully lob-
bied Manchester, N.H., Kent, N.Y.
and Hartford, Conn. to allow the
construction of a monument in
their communities.
It would be great to have one
here in the state, Young said, but
seeing one in Washington, D.C.,
would be her ultimate goal.
Our grandchildren are sixth
generation here in Moorestown.
Moorestown is a very special
place for us, Young said. It
would be great to have a monu-
ment in New Jersey, but I really
dont have enough time to try
and get one for the state.
Young and her family trav-
elled up to Harford recently for
the dedication of the newest
Gold Star Mothers monument.

In a brief ceremony held in the
Moorestown Friends Meeting-
house, 11-year-old Karina Santos,
a fifth-grader at the Upper Ele-
mentary School and a member of
FEP, the Friends Enrichment Pro-
gram for underserved
Moorestown children, was recog-
nized and honored as the first re-
cipient of a Monique Begg Schol-
arship.
David Gamber, a member of
the Peace and Social Concerns
Committee of the Meeting, wel-
comed Karina and presented her
with the award.
Established this year by the
Peace and Social Concerns Com-
mittee of the Meeting to recog-
nize Monique Beggs compas-
sionate and steadfast commit-
ment to serve the young people of
Moorestown, this scholarship is
merit-based and is to be awarded
annually to a member of FEP. To
be selected, a child must treat oth-
ers with love and respect, act re-
sponsibly, be a model of appropri-
ate behavior, and show eagerness
to learn and take full advantage of
the enrichment opportunities
that FEP provides. Hopefully, the
children worthy of this award
will become caring adults and
ambassadors of peace in their
families and in their communi-
ties.
Said Monique Begg, chair of
FEP, Karina was selected among
other contenders because she
epitomizes the qualities of heart,
mind, and soul that we seek to
nurture in our young people. She
is kind, considerate and caring,
and she works diligently and joy-
fully as a participant in FEP ac-
tivities as well as in pursuit of
her goal as an aspiring musician.
She understands that to succeed
in life to the best of ones ability,
one must be willing to work
hard.
Karina studies the violin at
school and at Perkins Conservato-
ry of Music, where she takes pri-
vate music lessons from violin
teacher Debbie Amsterdam.
Her conservatory lessons are
paid through a partnership agree-
ment between Perkins and FEP.
Amsterdam attended the cere-
mony.
Karina is a serious student of
the violin. She has never missed a
lesson. She brings to each lesson
a concentration, seriousness and
musical talent, which makes
every lesson highly productive
and joyful. She has told me that
she practices at home after her
lesson. Her willingness to work
hard and her ability to focus on a
task will serve her well in her mu-
sical pursuits and in other as-
pects of her life. It is clear that
Karina loves music and is devot-
ed to the violin, Amsterdam
said. Her parents fully support
her love of the violin; and she
brings that sense of love and sup-
port with her to every lesson. In
addition, this wonderful student
has on several occasions ex-
pressed to me her gratitude for
her lessons. She is truly an excep-
tional young person.
FEP offers scholarships and
other opportunities conducive to
good growth and development to
financially qualifying
Moorestown children.
Contributions in any amount
are always welcomed and grate-
fully accepted.

Sixth-grader Sujin Kim, with LS/MS Quaker education teacher Lynne Brick, presents Tim Fleming with a
check for $624 raised for Invisible Children at a recent Moorestown Friends middle school service fair.
Did you know that a $20 dona-
tion helps feed a family of four
for a week? What is even more
shocking is that those are only
four people out of the 91,000 who
have used an emergency feeding
program in South Jersey. This
year, Cherry Hill Mall and
Moorestown Mall are asking
local community members and
businesses to help feed these
neighbors in need and raise
hunger awareness in South Jer-
sey by participating in the Gift
Cards for Hunger Campaign.
From now through Dec. 31,
purchase a PREIT Mall Ameri-
can Express Gift Card at Cherry
Hill Mall or Moorestown Mall to
donate to the Food Bank of
South Jersey. For a minimum of
$20 to a maximum of $300, shop-
pers can purchase a gift card for
donation at Cherry Hill Malls
guest service center or
Moorestown Malls customer
service center.
The Food Bank of South Jer-
sey will use these funds to pur-
chase food and other items to
help needy families this holiday
season.
Spending a little extra for a
gift card donation can go a long
way for the less-fortunate fami-
lies of South Jersey. The Food
Bank of South Jersey makes it
possible for feeding programs
throughout Burlington, Camden,
Gloucester and Salem counties
to operate. It accounts for 75 per-
cent of the food used by pantries,
57 percent of kitchens food and
48 percent of shelters food.
In addition to the Gift Cards
for Hunger Campaign,
Moorestown Mall will host its
Second-Annual Businesses
Branch Out Against Hunger
holiday tree-decorating competi-
tion, which also supports the
Food Bank of South Jersey. More
information to come about this
event, which will be held Nov. 18
through Dec. 31.
Founded in 1985, the Food
Bank of South Jersey is a
501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
whose mission is to help elimi-
nate hunger and malnutrition in
four counties of southern New
Jersey - Burlington, Camden,
Gloucester and Salem. In the
26th year of community service,
the Food Bank of South Jersey
continues to serve as an agent for
effective food rescue and charita-
ble food distribution in southern
New Jersey. Since its inception,
they have provided more 100 mil-
lion pounds of food the equiva-
lent of 76 million meals to thou-
sands of families, seniors, indi-
viduals, and children in need.
