PERMIT NO. 1239
Its that time of the year. Its
time for the eighth annual Sun
newspapers Deck the Paws and
Help a Collie holiday drive to aid
area animal shelters and rescue
groups.
And, again this year, we need
your help. More specifically, the
animals in the shelters need your
help.
This year, the drive will run
from the week of Nov. 28 through
Dec. 16.
As mentioned, we started this
effort way back in 2004. That year,
we had only a few drop spots, and
we collected a couple of carloads
of supplies.
All of that has changed. In re-
cent years, we have had 20-30
drop spots and have been able to
deliver about 25-30 carloads of
supplies to the shelters every hol-
iday season.
The animals in these shelters
are in a tough spot. Our goal al-
ways has been to lighten the bur-
den shelters and rescue groups
have to keep the animals fed and
comfortable. When the shelters
receive basics, such as food, blan-
kets and litter, they save money.
Thats money that can go toward
helping to find animals a perma-
nent home.
Want to help? Heres how it all
works:
Right now, we need to build a
list of drop spots. We need places
where people can go to drop off
food, cat litter, cleaning supplies
and everything else our local ani-
mal shelters need. If you dont
mind people showing up at your
door and dropping 40-pound bags
of dog food on your floor, we need
to hear from you.
In a couple of weeks, we will
publish a list of drop spots in our
newspapers and online. People
then will read the list, gather sup-
plies and take them to a drop
spot.
After that, the supplies are
picked up and taken to a shelter.
It all starts with the drop spots.
The more spots we have, the
more supplies we collect. More
drop spots mean a brighter holi-
day season for shelter animals.
If you want to be a drop spot,
or if you have questions, please
send an email to
alan@elauwit.com. Please put An-
imal Shelter Drive in the subject
line.
Help animals during the holidays

The Moorestown Sun
Get ready for liquor at the
Moorestown Mall. Township vot-
ers overwhelmingly passed both
referendum questions last week
to allow liquor to be sold in the
mall.
Voters approved the first refer-
endum question the allowance
of liquor licenses to be sold in
the township by an unofficial
count of 4,138 to 2,750, according
to township representatives.
Voters approved the second
referendum question restrict-
ing the sale of liquor licenses to
fine dining establishments at the
Moorestown Mall by an unoffi-
cial count of 3,750 to 2,876 accord-
ing to the township.
It was a complete turnaround
from the last time Moorestown
residents had a chance to vote on
the allowance of liquor. In 2007,
voters overwhelmingly defeated
the sale of liquor licenses by
more than 2,000 votes.
This time around representa-
tives from the Pennsylvania Real
Estate Investment Trust which
owns the Moorestown Mall
campaigned vigorously since the
summer to garner votes. In Sep-
tember, PREIT President Joe
Coradino said that if the referen-
dums were passed, PREIT would
purchase four of the possible six
liquor licenses at a price of $1
million each for a total of $4 mil-
lion.
Coradino stood by the promise
after the victory.
We are planning on deliver-
ing on the promises that we
made, he said. We will be pur-
chasing four licenses at $1 mil-
lion each.
Coradino said PREIT repre-
sentatives will also be meeting
with chef Marc Vetri to discuss
the possibility of the chef open-
ing up a restaurant at the mall in
the future. Vetri had signed a let-
ter of interest with PREIT with
the caveat that the referendums
pass.
Coradino estimated that
liquor could be served at fine
dining establishments at the
mall by August. Presently,
Coradino said PREIT would
begin construction of a new, 12-
screen movie theater at the mall.
I would say probably the ear-
liest would be between August to
September in 2012. Probably
somewhere between August and
October youll start to see restau-
rants open, he said. Id love to
do things faster, but you have to
negotiate a lease, create con-
struction plans, go through sev-

2 THE MOORESTOWN SUN NOVEMBER 16-22, 2011
The 2011 season is now com-
plete. We proved to have the best
number two team in the state, sec-
ond only to Haddonfield in the CP
Cup, to Haddonfield in the
strongest classic field ever, and
second in the Tournament of
Champions to Millburn.
The final record stands at 27-4,
with three losses to Haddonfield
and one to Millburn.
In the 27 wins, the varsity play-
ers lost only three individual
points. The girls practiced hard,
competed well and supported one
another all the way. A team re-
flects its leaders, and seniors
Rachel Bass, Lauren Culbertson,
Kelsey Ham and Sarah Kim were
excellent in that regard. Credit
should also go to Coaches Call
and Hughes both of whom went
far above and beyond the norm
and who played critical roles in
the teams result.
The highlight of the past week
was our sweeping the Burlington
County Open, including Friends
and the four Lenape schools. Our
girls won each fight convincingly,
losing only one set in the entire
event.
For those who came to matches
and/or gave support in other
ways, thank you. Enjoy what re-
mains of the fall.

Moorestown girls tennis team.

Special to The Sun
On Monday, Nov. 21, the
Moorestown Home and School
Association will be holding its an-
nual turkey and pie drive. A
Thanksgiving tradition, the drive
provides holiday meals for local
needy families.
Last year more than 150 com-
plete Thanksgiving meals were
collected and boxed by
Moorestown students. Volunteer
students and parents assemble
the meals, which includes stuff-
ing, gravy, cranberry sauce, and
vegetables.
All of the meals along with
frozen turkeys and store bought
pies go to local families in
Moorestown while the remainder
goes to Family Services of
Burlington County as well the
Live Civilly Food Bank in
Moorestown.
The home and school associa-
tion will be accepting frozen
turkeys at Maple-Dawson Park
(across from Baker School) on
Nov. 21, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., the
Upper Elementary School from 7
a.m. to 2 p.m. and the William
Allen Middle School from 7 to 11
a.m.
They will be accepting non-
frozen store bought pies as well as
any nonperishable items needed
to complete the meals.
The meals needed for
Moorestown families will in-
crease this year due to the econo-
my. Through the generous dona-
tions of the community, the
Moorestown Home and School
Association will again be able to
share the traditional meal with
area families for Thanksgiving.
For any questions about how
you can be part of this tradition,
please contact Lisa Wasdyke at

NOVEMBER 16-22, 2011 THE MOORESTOWN SUN 3
eral phases and its hard to get
things done quickly. Also, no-
body wants to open up in July to
a market that wont be there.
He pointed to PREITs deci-
sion to limit the sale of liquor to
the mall as one of the biggest fac-
tors to sway public opinion on
liquor licenses.
Keeping liquor sales away
from Main Street was a big point
of concern for voters in 2007, he
said.
In spite of some of the criti-
cism by the opposition, we did
get out into the community and
deliver our message between
town hall calls, presentations at
the Moorestown Business Asso-
ciation and the Rotary. We got
our message out to the people
and I think at the end of the day
we had a fabulous grassroots
team who did a great amount of
work. The team was led by Seth
Broder, who is still taking a lot of
heat, he said. The icing on the
cake was the change in economic
circumstances. In 2007 we were
all walking around and whistling
about how great things were, but
not a year later the bottom fell
out of the economy. It swayed
opinions.
The referendums survived a
lawsuit filed earlier in the sum-
mer by a Moorestown resident
and lawyer who sought to bar
them from the November general
election ballots.
William Cox submitted a law-
suit claiming that PREIT did not
wait the necessary five years to
resubmit a referendum question
to be placed on the ballot.
Judge Ronald Bookbinder
ruled in favor of the defendants,
citing that the 2011 referendum
questions on the ballot were con-
sistent with previous decisions
put forth by the legislature and
appellate divisions.
Bookbinder said that if he
ruled otherwise, he would be
overruling the legislature and
appellate division, which include
former Gov. Alfred E. Driscoll.
Cox appealed the decision, but
it was upheld by the appellate di-
vision.
