The records of a computer retail store show that out of the 50 customers who purchased a desktop computer last month, all but 14 also purchased a
service plan that extends the warranty for an extra year. Out of the 100 customers who purchased a notebook computer last month, all but 14
purchased the same service plan.
Fill in the blanks of the statement below to make the statement the most reasonable possible.
Last month, customers of the store who purchased __________ {(a) desktop, (b) notebook} computers were less likely to purchase the service plan,
because only ______% purchased the service plan, whereas ______% of the customers who bought __________ {(a) desktop, (b) notebook}
computers purchased the service plan.
Explanation
We want to determine which group of customers was less likely to purchase the service plan. To do this, we can compare the percentages of
customers who purchased the service plan, or we can compare the percentages of customers who did not purchase the service plan.
14 28
Among customers who purchased desktop computers, 14 out of 50 did not purchase the service plan. Thus, = = 28% of them did not
50 100
purchase the service plan, and 100% − 28% = 72% of them purchased the service plan.
14
Among customers who purchased notebook computers, 14 out of 100 did not purchase the service plan. Thus, = 14% of them did not
100
purchase the service plan, and 100% − 14% = 86% of them purchased the service plan.
Because 72% of desktop computer buyers and 86% of the notebook computer buyers purchased the service plan, we conclude that the
customers who purchased desktop computers were less likely to purchase the service plan.
Answer
Last month, customers of the store who purchased desktop computers were less likely to purchase the service plan, because only 72 %
purchased the service plan, whereas 86 % of the customers who bought notebook computers purchased the service plan.
