THE ADVENTURE

1
When I was a young girl I used to love going adventuring. My dad always took me down
to the bush every weekend and we collected many sticks and stones to add to our
collection. I wasn’t like any ordinary girl as I loved the outdoors even as a young toddler.
I was never into dolls and tea parties. Soon I became old enough to venture out on my
own. When I ventured forth through the Australian bush land I felt as if I was in heaven.
There was nothing more beautiful than feeling the cool air brushing across my back.
The leaves crunched beneath my feet at every step. I felt as if I was home.

As the sun dipped down beyond the horizon, there was nothing more to do than to
head back home. On my way I heard a screeching chirp. It was the most horrible sound I
had ever heard in my life. Sure enough, I just had to investigate. In the dead of night, I
headed towards the screech. Whilst seeking for the screech I came across a lake or river
of some sort. Looking up and down the river I couldn’t find a way to cross it. In much
shame I decide to give up. It is about one o’ clock in the morning and I thought my dad
must be getting worried.

As I moved away from the lake there was only one problem, I did not remember which
direction I came from. My brain told me left but my instinct told me right. In my past
experiences I have always gone with my instinct. So of course I went with my instinct. As
I walked off into the distance I could see the sun breaking out in my distant view.

After what seemed like hours, I felt a sigh of relief rush through my body. I saw the
country field filled with cows and sheep. In the foggy distance I saw my dad lying down
without moving a muscle. I wished the night was just a dream as my dad was
traumatised from my long and unforgiving absence. I moved closer down the steep hill,
I felt a smile creep across my face. I shadowed the sun from my dad’s face and he woke
up with a jump.
“You are alive!” my dad bellowed, “You are alive!”
A joyful glee came over his face. Since then he always comes with me on my adventures.

The forest was dark and damp, the sky was black as ink and the trees swayed in the
breeze. Lost in the forest I was, no idea how to get out.
It was 12 o’clock on a Monday. I left for Amelia’s house, my best friend. We were having
the time of our lives when a silly idea of Amelia’s popped up. She had decided for us to
take an adventure in the gloomy forest where there is no sun to shine through the

forest. Amelia took my hand and headed to the forest. Our journey began. Amelia and I
were walking fast trying to explore, that we had no idea where we were.
Lost in the forest we were, we roamed around worrying. I knew this wasn’t a good idea.
We strolled around the forest again but little did we know we were going round in
circles until Amelia mentioned that she saw a house that seemed disturbing and
haunted every single time.

Amelia had another insane idea. She suggested going into the haunted house, so that
we can rest on the bed. I knew this would end terribly but I just agreed. We both went
in; I opened the rigid door and inside the house was grubby. It had hoary furniture and
a staircase that seemed like it would collapse in any minute.

Amelia and I both laid on the old fashioned, dusty bed. After ten elongated minutes had
past, we both decided to leave the haunted house and go back into the forest. As we
took a step, noises came out of nowhere, creepy and eerie noises and then BANG! The
door slammed shut! The roof started collapsing and the windows started breaking,
millions of shattered pieces of glass was on the floor! We were trapped in the haunted
house in the middle of the forest, alone, stranded, no one with us.

Amelia said, “Let’s get out from this window, make sure you don’t hurt yourself”
So we climbed out of the shattered window carefully and slowly, trying not to get hurt
by the glass that was pointing towards us. We made it out of the haunted house, I was
so glad but we still had to get out of the murky forest.

We walked around the forest, trying to find a way out. It felt like we had been walking
forever, my legs felt like jelly and I had no energy left. I was exhausted! I sat down when
suddenly I saw something. Turning back to Amelia I told her to follow me, and there a
few minutes later we found ourselves on a street.
Amelia said, “How did you get us here on this street Emily?”
I replied, “well you see I saw this path of light, I decided to follow it and remember how
you told me that there is no sun to shine through the forest well today I think we had a
miracle.’’

THE ADVENTURE
A tropical jungle is an awesome place. I had the opportunity of visiting one recently. My
friend Rahim, who works as a forest ranger, took me along on one of his trips into the
jungle. I had wanted to experience for myself first-hand what he had always spoken
about.

The moment we entered the jungle, a sort of semi-darkness enveloped us. The sky was
almost completely shut out by the canopy of leaves high above us. At ground level, thick
vegetation grew in every direction. The air was damp and had a peculiar smell to it.All
around us were the sounds of insects, birds and animals. Though we could not see
them, except for some birds, we knew they were there. The sounds echoed all over,
making the jungle feel eerie and strange.I had no idea how Rahim could find a way
through the bushes and trees. He said he was just following a path used by the
aborigines. As far as I was concerned, I could not see any path. I realised then how
easily an inexperienced person could get lost and perish in the jungle.Nevertheless I
followed Rahim as we trudged along slowly.

The most uncomfortable thing about being in the jungle were the leeches. These little
bloodsuckers never gave up. Despite thick boots and clothes, they still managed to bite
me.For the first time in my life I saw strange birds, insects, huge spiders, snakes, trees,
flowers, vines as thick as a man's hand and various animals. The experience was
unforgettable. I was awestruck by the might of nature. When we emerged from the
jungle I felt as though a great weight had been lifted from me. The clear blue sky was a
welcome sight. Outside, the world was definitely easier to cope with. The jungle made
me feel hemmed in and helpless. It was a good experience but I would prefer to remain
outside it.

A Night In The Forest What is it like to spend a night in the forest. This is relevant because
Draper and I have spent a night in a forest before. The night was cold and tough to go
through all though I had a sleeping bag. It was creepy I could hear things creaking in the
distance. I also had to walk outside of the tent to use the bathroom, or get food out of the
cooler. The night ended up being terrible. It felt as if the cold was piercing through my
blanket. I tried to warm up in my sleeping bag by moving around, but without being able
to make a fire in the tent I couldn’t get warm. Somehow my friend had already fallen
asleep, but as I lied awake I could hear the creaking of trees in the wind. I had to go
outside because I could

The bear was about ten feet away before Draper asked he should shoot it, but I decided
to try and scare it. So then I aimed into the sky and shot but it didn’t phase the bear it
stared at me with a look of hunger, but as it began to charge Draper shot the bear which
made it a ngry. I tried to jump out of the way it it was to fast and it hit my foot which mad
fall on my face, and as I looked up Draper had ran off somewhere. I heard the footsteps

of the bear then another gunshot realizing that Draper hadn’t run off, but used me as bait
to get a better shot. I heard the bear hit the forest floor, and saw the trees swaying like
people in a concert. I stood up and looked at Draper. We then decided to leave the forest
and go home. As we got to the forest edge the sun was beginning to come up we said
goodbye and went on our ways. The night ended and I went home thinking about
everything that happened. Thinking about the cold in the beginning of the night. How the
creatures and critters where such a rare encounter. Also about how lucky we had been to
get away from the bear with nothing, but a couple scrapes. This ended ventures into the
woods at night for

So there I stood, no clue about my surroundings in a place I had never been before. Being in
a forest all alone with nothing but a barely sharp pocket knife is a bad place to be but I had
no choice in the matter, I was lost. I knew the first thing I had to do would be to build some
kind of a shelter, something to keep me out of the weather and safe from any animals
wanting to eat me. Next, I would need to find a food source abundant enough to last until I
could be found. So I set out to find a perfect spot.

After walking for hours I came upon a stream that would be a perfect place to find a never
ending food source. With it being spring, the fish would be starting to spawn, and with
hibernation season ending, smaller game would be coming out to feed and drink from the
stream. This would also be the ideal spot for me to build my shelter. The area of the streams
location had a fairly wide open clearing, so it would be a good place to stay close to, and a
good place to start a signal fire big enough to be seen easily seen from the air.

I made a pretty basic shelter. I made a typical lean-to with branches I found lying around. I
first found two tall trees kind of close together with branches about five to six feet from the
ground. Next I took the branches I found lying on the ground and attached them to the trees.
With the frame now in place, I began adding to the frame by laying other branches onto the
support beams to make a back wall and putting leaves and grass on top to help keep rain
out. After finishing the shelter I covered the inside with leaves and grass to make a soft
place to lie down.

With my housing all finished I decided it would now be a good time to find something to eat.
I first tried the old Indian method of fishing with my hands; yes I tried to catch them with my
hands and had no luck. So I decided to get a little more modern, I took sticks and weaved
them together and made a fish trap. I placed the trap in the water between two big rocks so
it would not float away. With my trap in place I began to build two fires. One fire to use as a
signal fire, and the other to cook with.

I was walking alone on the forest."Ugh! It's raining and no one’s here" as I talk to myself. As I
was walking, I heard some creepy sound that's coming from behind my back. The sound was
getting louder and louder. But all I can see was woods everywhere. I didn’t know what to do, so
I started to scream.

I scream for help, but nobody came and then I realized that there wasn’t anyone except for
me. I started to run, but I felt like someone was following me. I turned around to see who was
it, but didn’t see anyone. As I was running, I entered a forest with trees filled with leaves of
green. There was a stream with water running down underneath a fallen tree. I move forward
to drink water, but I see shadows.
