In many countries, traditional dress and costumes
are considered effective ways of maintaining
links with the past. How effective can traditional
costumes be, in this sense? What other ways exist
to help citizens connect with a country’s past?
IDEA
Historic dress plays a key role in social events
In religious rituals or military parades, it is
helpful in transmitting social codes of
conducts and other praise-worthy
characteristics such as public duty and self-
sacrifice.
Remind citizens of the origins of cultural
traditions, which further evokes their sense of
patriotism
IDEA
Costumes are an accessory in these events, and
do not appear to constitute the central message
It is the ceremonies themselves that convey
the cultural norms
The costumes are of secondary importance
IDEA
There are in fact much more powerful ways in
which culture is conserved
Rich heritage of legends and folklore, the
significance of art and music in passing on our
traditions, in forms ranging from fine art to
handicrafts
These are a cultural inheritance, which
embodies important symbols and concepts far
more effectively than dress.

the statistics on migration challenges
that people from distinct age groups

cultural barriers.
BODY 1

encountered linguistic hindrances, both
groups shared approximate portions,
35% and 30%, respectively.

TASK 2
Multi-cultural societies, in which there is a
mixture of different ethnic peoples, bring more
benefits than drawbacks to a country. To what
extent do you agree or disagree?
IDEA
Respect the local traditions and customs.
With a rich blend of peoples, cultures and
lifestyles, people in multi-cultural societies tend
to be more open-minded and tolerant of
other people’s religions and cultural norms.
They co-operate and collaborate well with the
natives, working harmoniously side by side
IDEA
An influx of expertise, experience, investments as
well as a dynamic labor force
The majority of immigrants from different
cultural backgrounds are high achievers and
well-trained people.
They are key factors to the increase of
competitiveness, efficiency and productivity of
a nation’s economy and thus ensure the
prosperity of that nation itself.
IDEA
Tendency to maintain their unique ethnic cultures
with their own distinctive characteristics and
rituals
These trivial differences can cause some
conflicts
Hinder the development of the region where
different cultures integrate
