The Most Powerful Force in Space
A black hole is a spot in space that has incredibly powerful gravity. A black hole’s gravity is so strong
that it pulls everything nearby into it. It can pull stars, planets, and other things. Nothing can escape a black
hole. In fact, they are so powerful that even light cannot escape them.
Scientists first started talking about black holes in the year 1783. That year, one scientist said that in the
universe, there might be places with gravity strong enough to trap light. However, that scientist didn’t use the
term “black hole”. The term “black hole” was invented in 1967.
Black holes are formed when a star dies. When a star dies, it collapses. When that happens, a huge
amount of matter crowds into a very small space. The matter becomes very, very dense. How much matter are
we talking about? Imagine a star that is the size of ten suns. Imagine fitting that amount of matter into New
York City. That is what a black hole is like. Its gravity is so powerful because it has so much matter.
However, not all black holes are huge. Scientists believe that some black holes are the size of atoms.
Although these black holes are tiny, they might have the same amount of matter that a mountain has.
We can’t see black holes because they don’t have any light. They are completely invisible. Scientists
can guess where black holes are by studying nearby stars and planets. If gravity seems to be pulling the stars
and planets to one spot, then scientists believe that the spot is a black hole.
Some people wonder if a black hole could ever destroy the Earth. We do not need to worry about that.
There is no black hole that is close enough to destroy the Earth. The closest black hole is about 7,800 light years
away. In addition, the sun is not big enough to create a black hole.
Question 29: When are black holes formed?
A. When a new star is formed. C. When a planet collapses.
B. When two suns crash into each other. D. When a star dies.
Question 30: How do scientists study black holes?

A. Black holes have very little matter. C. We can’t see black holes.
B. Black holes can be big or small. D. Nothing can escape a black hole.
Question 32: Which of the following CAN’T be inferred from the passage?
A. Scientists started studying a black hole in 1067.
B. A black hole is invisible because it traps light.
C. The movement of stars and planets are affected by a nearby black hole.
D. A black hole gets its name because it doesn’t have any light.

The Brain: Myths and Facts
There are a lot of myths about the human brain. We are going to tell you a little about these myths, and we
are also going to give you the truth.
One of the biggest myths is that we only use 10 percent of our brains. The next part of that myth is that if we can
learn to use the rest of our brains, then we will be much smarter. People say this all the time, but it is absolutely
not true. The truth is that although we don't know everything about the human brain, we know that each part of it
has an important function. Modern scientists call the “10 percent myth” ridiculous.
The other most popular myth is about being "right brained" or "left brained". According to this myth,
people who use the right side of their brains tend to be more artistic and creative. People who use the left side of
their brains tend to be better at maths and science. This myth is as popular as the 10 percent myth, and it is also
wrong. In 2013, a study at an American University examined the right brain and left brain myth. According to
the study, we use both sides of our brains equally.
It is true that we use different parts of our brains for different things: We use our left side for language
more, and our right side when we need to pay attention. But there is no evidence that creative people use the
right side more, or that scientific people use the left side more. We have talked about myths, so let's look at a few
interesting facts about the brain. First of all, the brain feels no pain. Second, about 75 percent of the brain is
made of water. It is also the fattest organ in your body. Another interesting fact about the brain is that around the
time you turn 18 years old, it stops growing.
Question 29: According to the myth, what is true about the left side of our brains?
A. Creative people use that side more. C. Scientific people use that side more.
B. Hardworking people use that side more. D. Young people use that side more.
Question 30: What can we say about the left brain-right brain myth?
A. It is popular as 10 percent myth. C. It is older than the 10 percent myth.
B. It is actually correct. D. Only university students believe it.
Question 31: Which statement is true about human brain?
A. Each part of the brain has a specific function. C. Scientists partly agree with the common myths.
B. People don’t care about the 10 percent myth. D. It cannot help us feel pain.
Question 32: The word “this” in paragraph 2 refers to____.
A. the myth B. the truth. C. the rest of the brain. D. our intelligence.
Question 33: The word “ridiculous” in paragraph 2 is closet in meaning to ____.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 36 to 40.
In the twentieth century, people demand on unlimited energy to power their everyday lives. A wide range
of energy-run devices and modern conveniences are taken for granted, and although it may seem that we will
never be in danger of living without those conveniences, the fact is that many supplies of energy are dwindling
rapidly. Scientists are constantly searching for new sources of power to keep modern society running. Whether
future populations will continue to enjoy the benefits of abundant energy will depend on the success of this
research.
Coal, oil, and natural gas supply modern civilization with most of its power. However, not only are
supplies of these fuels limited, but they are a major source of pollution. If the energy demands of the future are
to be met without seriously harming the environment, existing alternative energy sources must be improved or
further explored and developed. These include nuclear, water, solar, wind, and geothermal power, as well as
energy from new, nonpolluting types of fuels. Each of these alternatives, however, has advantages and
disadvantages.
Nuclear power plants efficiently produce large amounts of electricity without polluting the atmosphere;
however, they are costly to build and maintain, and they pose the daunting problem of what to do with nuclear
wastes. Hydroelectric power is inexpensive and environmentally safe, but impractical for communities located
far from moving water. Harnessing energy from tides and waves has similar drawbacks. Solar power holds great
promise for the future but methods of collecting and concentrating sunlight are as yet inefficient, as are methods
of harnessing wind power.
Every source of energy has its disadvantages. One way to minimize them is to use less energy.
Conservation efforts coupled with renewable energy resources, such as a combination of solar, water, wind, and
geothermal energy and alternative fuels, such as alcohol and hydrogen, will ensure supplies of clean, affordable
energy for humanity’s future.
Question 36. The passage suggests that_____.
A. people use energy without giving great thought to where it’s coming from.
B. the search for energy sources is mainly a problem for the future.
C. scientists believe we will never have to go without our modern conveniences.
D. modern society requires a minimum amount of energy to keep it running.
Question 37. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.
A. most alternative energy sources have proven to be impractical.
B. many alternative energy sources are environmentally hazardous.
C. nuclear power solves one problem while creating others.
D. solar and wind power are not promising for the future.
Question 38. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A. Just like coal, nuclear energy is a pollutant to the air.
B. It is hard for people away from the water to use hydroelectric power
C. Scientists are on their way to look for alternative sources of energy.
D. Wind power and solar power have the same problem.
Question 39. The word "dwindling " in paragraph 1 mostly means ______.
A. diminishing B. changing C. increasing D. limiting
Question 40. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. The search for alternative energy sources is not over.
B. Our present energy sources must be eliminated and replaced with alternative sources.
C. Alternative sources of energy on this planet are very limited.
D. Demands for energy in the future are likely to decrease.

In the world today, particularly in the two most industrialized areas, North America and Europe,
recycling is big news. People are talking about it, practicing it, and discovering new ways to be sensitive to the
environment. Recycling means finding was to use products a second time. The motto of the recycling movement
is "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle".
The first step is to reduce garbage. In stores, a shopper has to buy products in blister packs, boxes and
expensive plastic wrappings. A hamburger from a fast-food restaurant comes in lots of packaging: usually paper,
a box, and a bag. All that packaging is wasted resources. People should try to buy things that are wrapped
simply, and to reuse cups and utensils. Another way to reduce waste is to buy high-quality products. When low
quality appliances break, many customers throw them away and buy new ones - a loss of more resources and
more energy. For example. if a customer buys a high-quality appliance that can be easily repaired, the
manufacturer receives an important message. In the same way. if a customer chooses a product with less
packaging, that customer sends an important message to the manufacturers. To reduce garbage, the throwaway
must stop.
The second step is to reuse. It is better to buy juices and soft drinks in returnable bottles. After customers.
empty the bottles, they return them to the store. The manufacturers of the drinks collect the bottles, wash them,
and then fill them again. The energy that is necessary to make new bottles is saved. In some parts of the world,
returning bottles for money is a common practice. In those places, the garbage dumps have relatively little glass
and plastic from throwaway bottles.
The third step is being environmentally sensitive is to recycle. Spent motor oil can be cleaned and used
again. Aluminum cans are expensive to make. It takes the same amount of energy to make one aluminum can
as it does to run a color TV set for three hours. When people collect and recycle aluminum (for new cans), they
help save one of the world's precious resources.
Question 29: What is the main topic of the passage?
A. how to reduce garbage disposal C. what people often understand about the term 'recycle'

Question 31: People can do the following to reduce waste EXCEPT______.
A. buy high-quality product C. reuse cups
B. buy simply-wrapped things D. buy fewer hamburgers
Question 32: It is a waste when customers buy low-quality products because _______.
A. Because people will soon throw them away.
B. Because they have to be repaired many times.
C. Because customers change their ideas all the time.
D. Because they produce less energy.
Question 33: What best describes the process of reuse?
A. The bottles are collected, washed, returned and filled again.
B. The bottles are filled again after being returned, collected and washed.
C. The bottles are washed, retuned, filled again and collected.

answer to each of the questions from 36 to 40.
Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which
he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total
work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three
classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five
courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each
year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a
student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as
a regular practice.
For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available
for the student to show to prospective employers. All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work, but
in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student
organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed by
students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example,
by cheating has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the
system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is
much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.

When we think of the Hawaiian Islands, they often bring to mind a thriving tourist destination with
white sandy beaches and palm trees. However, on one of the most northern islands, you will not find any tourists
or holiday activities. The island of Niihau is characterized by an extinct volcano, a delicate wetland and thriving
forests. It is also the home to various endangered species such as the Hawaiian monk seal. The island belongs
to the Robinson family who bought it from the King of Hawaii back in 1864 with the promise to maintain the
traditional Hawaiian culture and language of the natives living there. In order to keep this promise, the family
over time began to limit visitors to the island. Today, contact with the native Niihauans on the island is forbidden
except by invitation. Therefore, until recently, the natives knew very little about the outside world.
A walk through the main village of the island shows how Niihau appears to be frozen in time. There are
no cars, shops, restaurants or police. The only means of transport are horses and bicycles. There is no running
water, power or telephone lines. All of the 130 permanent residents are native Hawaiians and speak Hawaiian
as their first language. They don’t pay rent and live by fishing and farming. It’s a lifestyle far different from
residents on the other Hawaiian Islands.
The children of Niihau may not have TV or electronics like other children, but they attend a small school
that relies entirely on solar power for electricity. The school is one of the few schools in the USA that is
completely solar powered. The school teaches the Hawaiian traditions and values of living off the land and
ocean, and at the same time offers the children the opportunity to learn how to use computers and connect with
the outside world.
One-way outsiders can connect with Niihau is to purchase the islanders’ handicrafts such as their shell
jewelry. These products are on sale in other islands. Although few have the chance to visit this forbidden land,
its mystery continues to fascinate tourists.

answer to each of the questions from 36 to 40.
Vietnam’s population is ageing quickly. In 2017, more than 10 per cent of the population will be 60 and
older, and in 15-20 years the elderly will account for one third of the total population. This raises concerns about
healthcare, welfare and pensions for the elderly at a time when Vietnam is focusing on economic integration
and requires a large labor force. So far two solutions have been proposed: to loosen the two-child policy and to
increase the retirement age to 58 for women and 62 for men. By ending the two-child policy the government
expects to make up for the ageing population within the next 20 years. But its effect could be creating an
uncontrollable boom in the Vietnamese population. When the government loosened the two-child policy in
2015 in a trial period, in the first 6 months of 2016 the third child birth rate increased remarkably by 7.5 per
cent
Raising the retirement age has been proposed by the Ministry of Labor pending parliamentary evaluation
in May 2017. While the policy is beneficial in utilizing the work experience of the elderly while creating savings
in the pension budget, it also means fewer job prospects and promotion opportunities for younger generations.
It is also not in the interest of all the elderly, especially the 70 per cent of Vietnam's labor force working in
manual labor - intensive sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and construction where working above the
age of 50 can be dangerous and unproductive. Despite these drawbacks, raising the retirement age is still
considered by policymakers as one of the key solutions to the ageing population problem in Vietnam. However,
these are only temporary solutions.
Question 36. The best title for this passage could be ________.
A. Vietnam struggling with ageing population
B. Stopping the two-child policy in Vietnam
C. Raising the retirement age in Vietnam
D. How to solve the aging population in Vietnam
Question 37. Which statement is probably TRUE according to the information in the paragraph 1?
A. In 2017, the elderly take up for one third of the total population, this leads to more concerns about
healthcare, welfare and pensions for the elderly.
B. In 2015, the two-child policy has been officially tightened and succeeded.
C. The government would promote families to have two children to compensate for the ageing
population within the next 20 years.
D. In the next 15-17 years, Vietnam's economy will need a large labor force to integrate with global
economy.
Question 38. The word "temporary" in paragraph 2 means ________.
A. constant B. permanent C. short-term D. long-term
Question 39. The word “its" in paragraph 1 refers to ________?
A. two-Child policy B. aging population
C. retirement age D. economic integration
Question 40. In the second paragraph, the writer suggests that ________.
A. The Ministry of Labor has applied raising the retirement age in May 2017.
B. Raising the retirement age can reduce job opportunities for younger generations.
C. The elderly whose age is 50 would be dangerous if they continued to work
D. Raising the retirement age and stopping two-child policy can be considered as long-term and
effective solutions.

Experts in climatology and other scientists are becoming extremely concerned about the changes to our
climate which are taking place. Admittedly, climate changes have occurred on our planet before. For example,
there have been several ice ages or glacial periods.
These climatic changes, however, were different from the modern ones in that they occurred gradually
and, as far as we know, naturally. The changes currently being monitored are said to be the result not of natural
causes, but of human activity. Furthermore, the rate of change is becoming alarmingly rapid. The major
problem is that the planet appears to be warming up. According to some experts, this warming process, known
as global warming, is occurring at a rate unprecedented in the last 10,000 years. The implications for the planet
are very serious. Rising global temperatures could give rise to such ecological disasters as extremely high
increases in the incidence of flooding and of droughts. These in turn could have a harmful effect on agriculture.
It is thought that this unusual warming of the Earth has been caused by so-called greenhouse gases, such as
carbon dioxide, being emitted into the atmosphere by car engines and modern industrial processes, for example.
Such gases not only add to the pollution of the atmosphere, but also create a greenhouse effect, by which the
heat of the sun is trapped. This leads to the warming up of the planet. Politicians are also concerned about
climate change and there are now regular summits on the subject, attended by representatives from around 180
of the world's industrialized countries. Of these summits, the most important took place in Kyoto in Japan in
1997. There it was agreed that the most industrialized countries would try to reduce the volume of greenhouse
gas emissions and were given targets for this reduction of emissions.
It was also suggested that more forests should be planted to create so-called sinks to absorb greenhouse
gases. At least part of the problem of rapid climate change has been caused by too drastic deforestation.
Sadly, the targets are not being met. Even more sadly, global warnings about climate changes are often
still being regarded as scaremongering.

Tornadoes are giant rotating columns of air. They form in thunderstorms when there is a great difference
in the temperature and humidity of the lower and upper atmosphere. They can be very dangerous and very
destructive.
There are different varieties of tornadoes. They can be very big or small. Some tornadoes are only a
few feet across and others can travel across an entire state. Tornadoes stretch from the ground high into the sky.
Usually, people rate them from F0 to F5, F5 being the most dangerous with wind speeds of around 261- 318
miles per hour. They are a very violent force of nature and can lay whole towns completely flat.
Tornadoes can happen all over the world but a lot of them happen in the central United States in a region
called Tornado Alley. Tornado Alley is made up of the low, flat states of the central United States between the
Rocky Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains. Even though Tornado Alley is the most common place for
tornadoes, the deadliest recorded tornado was in Bangladesh in 1989 and killed around 1,300 people. Recently,
massive tornadoes destroyed large parts of Alabama in the United States, a state that does not usually have
tornadoes.
