“The Thief and The Boy” by Basab Ghosh.
Student#1: Once upon a time, there lived a thief in a small town. Ever since
the thief was a young boy, he had been stealing things. Now that he had grown
up, he still stole to make a living. And because he had been stealing since
childhood, he had no regrets. This thief believed himself to be extremely
smart. “I am quite smart,” the thief would think. “Since I have so much
experience with stealing things, no one can trick me”. The man was happy with
himself and his deeds.

Then one day, the thief decided to take a walk by the farmlands. He had run
out of food and money for that day. So, he thought, “I’ll take a walk down the
fields, perhaps I’ll find something for tonight!” So off he went. He dressed well,
so as not to draw suspicion. The man walked a lot, before coming to a well.

Student#1: There, the man found a little boy. The boy was crying bitterly. “Why
do you cry, little boy?” the thief asked the boy.

Student#2: Stifling his cries, showed the man a piece of rope. “I came to this
well to fill my bucket with water,” the little boy sobbed. “The bucket was tied to
this rope,” he continued to explain. “But the moment I threw the bucket in, the
rope snapped and the bucket fell in.”

Student#1:“Then why don’t you go get another bucket and more rope?” the
thief asked the boy. The thief did not understand the fuss about just one
bucket.

Student#2: Then the boy tells him that the bucket was made out of silver. “If I
leave it in,” the boy began sobbing even more, “mother will get mad!”

Student#1: Now the thief understood the reason why the little boy was crying
miserably! “Don’t worry,” the thief told the boy. “I’ll get your bucket out in no
time.” And so, the thief threw off his clothes and bravely jumped into the well.
Once inside the well, the thief searched and searched but could not find the
silver bucket. “Little boy!” the thief called out. But his calls were never
answered. So, the thief decided to get and see the little boy. As the man was
getting out of the well, he realized that he had been fooled!

When he got out of the well, the boy was nowhere to be seen. “That little thief!
bellowed the thief. “He tricked me! The little boy purposefully made me jump in
the well. And in the end, he took all my belongings and ran away,” the thief was
mighty mad. “Now what shall I do with no money and no clothes?” thought the
thief.

The end.

BIBLIOGRAPHY
INTRODUCTION

A Yuchengco-Ayala Educational Partnership
What is a bibliography?
• is a list of sources that an author of a work used to
create his work
• it is a compilation of citations that is at the end of an
academic paper like essays, research papers, and
reports

A Yuchengco-Ayala Educational Partnership

What is a bibliography?
• you may also find a brief, less formal bibliography at
the end of a journalistic piece, presentation, or video
• in nearly all academic instances, a bibliography is
required as to avoid plagiarism

A Yuchengco-Ayala Educational Partnership

What is the purpose of a bibliography?
• 4 Cs: Credibility, Crediting, Continuity, Compliance
• Credibility: shows other people reading your paper
that it is credible as you have gone through a lot of
sources to create it
• Crediting: acknowledging works of other authors
• Continuity: Research is a continuous process. An
author uses other people’s work to create his paper
and other people will use his work to create their
works as well.

What is the purpose of a bibliography?
• Compliance: Scholars should always comply with
academic, ethical, and most especially legal
standards.
• Additionally, a bibliography can also help other
readers to determine the primary and secondary
sources in a paper.

Kinds of Bibliographies:
• Enumerative - the most basic kind of bibliography.
It’s a list of sources that is ordered according to a
specific characteristic, like alphabetically by authors’
last names or grouped according to topic or
language.

Kinds of Enumerative Bibliographies:
• National - listed according to a specific region or
nation, or even time periods.
• Personal - lists sources according to authors, be it
an individual author or a group of authors. A personal
bibliography can also list sources that are
unpublished or are just difficult to find.

Kinds of Enumerative Bibliographies:
• Corporate - lists sources according to specific
organizations. “The sources can be about an
organization, published by that organization, or
owned by that organization.” (Kramer)
• Subject - lists sources according to subjects they
cover.

A Yuchengco-Ayala Educational Partnership

Kinds of Bibliographies:
• Annotated - A bibliography that includes
annotations that highlight explanations or
descriptions of a source.

A Yuchengco-Ayala Educational Partnership

Kinds of Annotated Bibliographies:
• Descriptive or Informative - “A descriptive or
informative annotated bibliography describes or
summarizes a source like an abstract. It also
describes why the source is useful for researching a
particular topic or question and what the author's
main arguments and conclusions are without
evaluating what the author concludes.” (Annotated
Bibliographies)

Descriptive or Informative
Breeding evil. (2005, August 6). Economist, 376(8438), 9. Retrieved from
http://www.economist.com

This editorial from the Economist describes the controversy surrounding video games
and the effect they have on people who use them. The author points out that
skepticism of new media have gone back to the time of the ancient Greeks, so this
controversy surrounding video games is nothing new. The article also points out that
most critics of gaming are people over 40 and it is an issue of generations not
understanding one another, rather than of the games themselves. As the youth of today
grow older, the controversy will die out, according to the author. The author of this
article stresses the age factor over violence as the real reason for opposition to video
games and stresses the good gaming has done in most areas of human life. This article
is distinctive in exploring the controversy surrounding video games from a generational
standpoint and is written for a general audience.

Kinds of Annotated Bibliographies:
• Analytical or Critical - “An analytical or critical
annotated bibliography not only summarizes the
source and points out its distinctive features, it also
analyzes what is being said. It examines the
strengths and weaknesses of what is presented as
well as describing the applicability of the author's
conclusions to the research being conducted.”

This editorial from the Economist describes the controversy surrounding video games and
the effect they have on people who use them. The article points out that most critics of
gaming are people over 40 and it is an issues of age not of the games themselves. While the
author briefly mentions studies done around the issue of violence and gaming, he does not
go into enough depth for the reader to truly know the range of studies that have actually
been done in this area, other than to take his word that the research is unsatisfactory. The
author of this article stresses the age factor over violence as the real reason for opposition
to video games and stresses the good gaming has done in most areas of human life. This
article is a good resource for those wanting to begin to explore the controversy surrounding
video games, however, for any doing serious research, one should actually examine some of
the research studies that have been done in this area rather than simply take the author's
word that opposition to video games is simply due to an issue of generational divide.

Kinds of Bibliographies:
• Single-author - lists works by a single author. “With
certain assignments, like an essay comparing two of
an author’s books, your bibliography is a
single-author bibliography by default. In this case,
you can choose how to order the sources, such as by
publication date or alphabetically by title.” (Kramer)

A Yuchengco-Ayala Educational Partnership

Kinds of Bibliographies:
• Selected - “A selected bibliography is a bibliography that
only lists some of the sources you consulted. Usually,
these are the most important sources for your work. You
might write a selected bibliography if you consulted a
variety of minor sources that you didn’t end up citing
directly in your work. A selected bibliography may also be
an annotated bibliography.” (Kramer)
