Personal Statement
Use the personal statement to tell us about your interest in the Major/Academic programme you wish to study at
LUMS. (Minimum words: 200)
My infatuation with accounting stemmed from a sense of peculiarity. They were mere numbers at first, devoid of any
implication beyond the practical means– calculating profit or loss. When I took accounting as a subject in my A levels,
I found myself questioning whether the practices were ethical at all, they seemed fairly accommodating to tricks,
hence how could they in any way be okay for consumers?

Keen to satisfy my curiosity, I delved into “Financial Shenanigans” by Howard M. Schilt, which facilitated my interest
in accounting manipulation straying from the mere notion that companies overstated their assets, also exploring that

they might understate them to maneuver growth. Schilit identified various red flags and warning signs that indicated
potential manipulation in financial statements, perhaps to provide investors with better tools and resources, but also
provided great insight from a student’s perspective. Thus, indulging in it has equipped me with tools to navigate the
complexities of financial reporting and analysis with a critical eye. It was only uphill from there.

From demonstrating John Nash's game theory to my classmates to telling my siblings for the 100th time about J.P
Morgan's heroics during the 1907 Wall Street crash, my interest in accounting only grew. The world’s happenings
have always been intriguing to me, and the past has encompassed time and time again their cruciality; from its
intricate theories, inherently understandable characteristics, and wide-ranging applicability, one could elevate a
struggling country like Botswana and transform it into an African powerhouse simply by integrating the boundless
realms of accounting and finance.

Captivated, I expanded my reading list. When I read "The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable" by
Nassim Nicholas Taleb, I was further immersed in the unpredictable financial world. Highlighting the limitations of
sole dependence on historic performance for risk management and financial reporting, it advocated for the need for a
paradigm shift in how we approach hindrances posed by ‘Black Swan’ events–meaning rare and unpredictable
events as stated by the author. Upon reading it, I built a newfound appreciation for concepts such as ‘anti-fragility’
which, in essence, encouraged individuals and systems to not only endure uncertainty and chaos but to actively
benefit and improve from it. It was thought-provoking, which inspired me to learn more about the proclivity of
accounting to imitate nature. The way it mirrored the principles governing natural systems, providing a structured
framework that fosters transparency, accountability, and equilibrium in the financial world was truly remarkable.

This fascination with accounts, hence, resulted in my decision to plan my career further as a Chartered Accountant. I
believe an Undergraduate degree in finance and accounting through an esteemed institute such as the AACSB
Accredited LUMS Suleman Dawood School of Business, would provide me with greater opportunities and success,
not only providing a strong foundation but also allowing exemptions in the ICAP examinations, along with a reduced
practical training requirement. I am confident this degree and program is an ideal fit for me, considering my academic
interests, and career ambitions.

Discuss your ambitions, skills, and experience, and how they will help you succeed in your chosen Major/Academic
programme. (Minimum words: 200)
Throughout my academic career, I've placed special emphasis on co-curriculars.

I have remained engaged in tutoring both my peers and juniors for mathematics. Having taken it during my O levels,
and further extensively studying it during my A levels, I’ve become confident in my analytical skills, and quantitative
literacy, both of which are crucial to excel in a subject such as accounting. Tutoring my peers has of course helped
me harbor skills such as teamwork, and communication, but it has been equally beneficial in honing my subject
mastery in mathematics since explaining concepts to others requires a comprehensive understanding of the material,
hence reinforcing your own knowledge.

Being the first-born daughter of business proprietors, I was often expected to help around the business and
household. One of my primary responsibilities was to decipher various documents related to my grandfather's
financial matters, ranging from government-provided retirement benefits to rental statements for the properties he
had leased. His struggles with vision impairment compelled me to develop a keen understanding of these complex
documents, providing him with the clarity he desperately needed. This early exposure to financial intricacies planted
the seeds for my future involvement in accounting.

Pretty soon, my father decided it would do my interest in accounting justice if I were to work with our head
accountant. Working side by side with our head accountant, I found myself immersed in the practical aspects of

accounting. From drafting income statements to formulating budgets and analyzing financial statements, I began to
apply the concepts learned within the confines of my classroom to the dynamic and ever-changing landscape of
actual businesses. The dichotomy of my academic foundation and real-world experience enriched my understanding
of the subject as a whole, reinforcing the relevance of classroom learning in professional settings.

Throughout my involvement in various initiatives, such as FS360, the Faisalabad Literary Festival, and drives for
flood donations for Pakistani flood victims in 2022, I have honed my skills in event management and community
engagement. As the event head for FS360, a participant in the Faisalabad Literary Festival's budgeting process, and
an orchestrator for flood donation drives, I have not only enhanced my practical skills in event management and
financial planning but have also strengthened my ability to connect with individuals who share a passion for making a
positive impact.

My academic journey is more than theoretical; it's a commitment to harness the potential of accounting and finance
for positive change. The goal is clear: contribute to the betterment of societies and economies, recognizing the
profound influence these disciplines wield beyond mere numbers and ledgers. This curiosity and drive of mine is why
I desire to study accounting and finance at university. I aspire to pursue my career as a chartered accountant and
perhaps one day perform an Income statement for a note-worthy organization. With like-minded individuals, my drive,
and my skillsets, I intend to further delve into the peculiarities and patterns of the financial world, honing my practical
skills and being of service to both the institution and the world.
