Mathematics
Quarter 3 – Module 1:
Intersecting, Parallel and
Perpendicular Lines
Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM] is prepared so that you, our

dear learners, can continue your studies and learn while at
home. Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and discussions
are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each pert shall guide

you step-by step as you discover and understand the lesson
prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on

lessons in each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on
completing this module or if you need to ask your facilitator or
your teacher's assistance for better understanding of the lesson.
At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to
self- check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher

are also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and
reminders on how they can best help you on your home-based
learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks
on any part of this SLM. use a separate sheet of paper in
answering the exercises and tests. And read the instructions
carefully before
performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in

answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult
your teacher or facilitator.

Thank You.

Lesson Describing and Drawing
Intersecting, Parallel and
1 Perpendicular Lines
Using Ruler and Set Square
Points and lines are the basic figure use in geometry. A
point is represented by a dot, which refers to an exact location.
Lines are formed by set of points that extends infinitely in two
directions and defined by two distinct points in the line.
Intersecting, parallel and perpendicular lines are formed by
two or more lines in different settings.

What’s In

Hello Learners! Before describing and drawing intersecting,

parallel and perpendicular lines, you must know the concept of
points and lines.

Everything we draw starts with a point. It is the most

fundamental object in geometry. A point is named by a capital
letter.
P is read as Point P.

Next to point is the line. It is set of points that extends

infinitely in both directions. It is named by two distinct point in
the line. Given point P and point M, connecting it and extending
in both sides will form line PM.
P M

Does not mean that point P and point M are the only points
in the line, you can put some points in between P and M or
beyond.

3
A line is also named by a small letter as shown in the figure
below.

call it as line m.
m

Drill: Get a pencil and ruler, draw lines by connecting the given
points. Copy the set of points needed in a separate space before
you draw the lines. Do it in a sheet of paper.

E F G H

Example:
B C
Line BG and line FC

F G

1. Line AF and line EB 2. Line AF and line BG

3. Line CG and line FH 4. Line AE and line BF

5. Line DH and line GH

What’s New

Are you aware of the COVID 19 pandemic? It caused

lockdown in different areas, prohibiting us to travel in different
places in the country. For a long time without any travel, we
might forget the road signs. Will you please recall the names of
the following signages?

Direction: Write the name of each signage in a sheet of paper.

1. _________________

5
2. _________________

3. _________________

What geometrical figures are similar to those signages?

Are you thinking of lines, intersecting, parallel and

perpendicular lines?
Congratulations!!! You are now ready to learn new
lesson.

What is It

Intersecting, Parallel and Perpendicular Lines

Look at the figure below and try to describe the points in the
line.
A
B
C
The figure shows line AB and line BC meet at point B. These
are called intersecting line. Intersecting lines are lines that meet
at a point.

6
r

line r intersects line t at point M

M
t

Two lines on the same plane will only meet once.

Try to extend the two lines in the next figure.

m
n

Do you think line m and line n intersect with each other if

they extend in both directions?
If your answer is no, you are correct, these lines are called
parallel lines. Parallel lines are lines in the same plane that will
never intersect. They have the same distance apart at all times.

A D

Distance from point A to point C must be the same with the

distance from point B to point D

7
Compare the figure below with intersecting lines.
L

R T

Line LR intersect line RT at point R. As shown in the figure,

the intersection formed a square corner or a right angle, these
lines are called perpendicular lines. Perpendicular lines are two
lines that intersect and form a right angle.

d c
Given line d is parallel with line c, line d is perpendicular
with line e, we can say that line c is also perpendicular with line
e because it has the same direction with line d. On the other
hand, if two lines are both perpendicular to the same line, they
are parallel lines.

Using Ruler and Set Square

After knowing the description of intersecting, parallel and

perpendicular lines, let us practice how to draw these lines using
ruler and set square.

A ruler is used to measure length and draw straight lines.

Set square is a triangular device with one angle of 90o, used
for drawing straight lines and angles.

Steps in Drawing Intersecting, Parallel and

Perpendicular Lines

A. Intersecting Lines

Step 1
Use any of the three devices to create the first line, use
small letter to name the line.

Step 2

9
Remove the device and create another line passing a point
in the first line and put another small letter for the name of the
second line.

v p

line m intersects line p

B. Parallel lines

Step 1

10
Draw a broken line using the ruler and place one set square
as shown in the figure to create the first line. Name the line using
any small letter.

Step 2

Move the set square sideward aligning the bottom part of

the set square to the broken line to create the second line. Use
another small letter to name it.

Moving to left side

Moving to right side

11

v
g h

Line g is parallel with line h

C. Perpendicular Lines

Step 1

Draw the first line using any of the device in any direction,
name the first line with any small letter.

Step 2

12
Draw the second line as shown in the figure aligning the
bottom part of the set square to create square corner. Name the
second line with another small letter.

v
f

Step 3

Remove the set square and extend the line to complete the
figure below.

V

Step 4

13
Draw small square as shown in the figure as indicator of
right angle.

V
f

Line e is perpendicular with line f
