Mid-Career Reflection
In the quiet moments of introspection, you may
wonder about the legacy you are building and the
chapters of your life yet to be written.

Meet Ese, a mid-career

professional grappling with what
legacy she will leave behind. When
she turned 40, the desire to
transition into living a purpose-
driven life intensified.
The fire that once drove Ese’s
ambition had dwindled, she was
struggling to stay motivated at work. Her story is

Full Potential
Feeling under-utilized at work is a common trend
among career professionals. We are really good at
what we do, we create value for our organizations.
But corporate bureaucracy works like an
unfathomable force, it slows us down and limits how
far we climb up the corporate ladder.
This is exactly the position
Mohammed found himself, he had
a boss who was constantly
threatened by his brilliance and
dynamism.
Mohammed was the ‘secret sauce’ in the Tax
department, his knowledge and expertise of the
local tax laws was saving his company millions in tax
remittances.

The possibility of being recognized by senior

management as a high potential employee was very
high. But his boss managed him differently, he was a
hidden gem whose valuable skills furthered his
boss’s career, while Mohammed’s career progression
stalled.

Paid Expert
Financial stress is a silent force affecting many
professionals today, especially with the uncertainty of
inflation and unplanned currency devaluation.
Uche was faced with this
challenge. Her husband’s
business was struggling, her
salary from work had
remained the same for over
13 months, while the cost of
every other thing under the
sun had more than doubled.
Rent, schools fees, groceries, everything was way
more expensive and her family was struggling to
stay afloat.

Uche had always been the relationship fixer. All her

friends used to pick her brains for free, and went on
to spread the word on her unique expertise and how
fantastic she was. Even in church, she was a
marriage counsellor volunteering for free; while in
her place of work, she was the ‘free’ relationship
coach.

kindness, charity, CSR are all noble concepts we
should all imbibe. However, there are times when it is
unwise and impracticable to do free work, we just
need to know the difference and adapt accordingly.
This is because free work isn’t really ‘free’, there is
real cost attached to it. We will review these costs in
chapter 5.

urgency and motivation to monetize your
skills.
 4. Navigating the Fear of
Relying on Retirement Funds
The fear of reaching retirement age with inadequate
savings or pension is a powerful motivator for change.
Imagine that as you are in active employment with full
financial benefits and you still struggle to make ends
meet, how possible is it that your pension will
sufficiently maintain your current lifestyle at
retirement?

Michael faced this fear when he turned 45, he had

about 15 years to retirement and his 4 kids were
below age 10. How will he see them through their
educational endeavor in private schools after
retirement with his current pension plan and limited
investments?

He didn’t even trust that his pension fund

administrators were prudently managing his
portfolio. What if the system fails? These concerns
purred Michael to proactively monetize his time and
talent.

 5. The Hidden Cost of “Free”

‘Givers’ generally find it hard to monetize their talent

and I get it. It is good to be good, plus there is a
certain level of satisfaction
and fulfilment that comes
from helping others.
However, it is important to
know that helping people
for free comes with a cost.
It is not entirely free. It
takes a lot of time and
resources to help people gain effective
transformation in any endeavor. This dedication
robs you of time you would otherwise spend with
your family, and on self development; not to mention
selfcare, rejuvenation and your health.

On the flip side, it is important to be aware that

when people pay you to help them, they pay
attention. They are usually more dedicated to the
transformative process. As a result, they gain
millage faster.

It was a draining tradeoff for Uche with regards to

her passion for relationship counseling. Despite
helping countless couples to restore bliss in their
relationships, Uche was left emotionally and
financially depleted from years of pro-bono work.

Only when she started treating her talent as a

valuable commodity worthy of compensation, did
she break free of the self-imposed "free" tax she
had been paying.

You can always help others for free and consider it

CSR, charity or kindness; just be aware that there is
cost to this which can potentially become very
expensive to you and your loved ones.
