Background on the video
The video entitled The Hero’s Journey is an animated film showing the steps of the monomyth with the help
of various examples taken from action films.
Joseph Campbell (1904-1987) was an American professor of literature who coined the term “monomyth”,
or “hero’s journey” in his 1949 book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, to describe an archetypal narrative in
which the protagonist always follows the same pattern. George Lucas himself acknowledged that his Star
Wars trilogy had been greatly influenced by Campbell’s monomyth, especially with Luke Skywalker’s journey
