SOURCE A:

The Babri Masjid was a 16th-century mosque built during the Mughal era. It was named after the Mughal
emperor Babur and stood in Ayodhya. Hindus believe that the mosque was constructed on the birthplace of
Lord Rama. The site became the center of a long-standing socio-political dispute between Hindus and Muslims.
On 6 December 1992, during a rally organized by Hindu nationalist groups, the Babri Masjid was demolished by a
large group of activists. The demolition resulted in intercommunal rioting between Hindus and Muslims, leading
to the death of at least 2,000 people. The incident sparked widespread controversy and tensions, including
retaliatory killings of Hindus in Pakistan and Bangladesh.
