HIRAM BINGHAM

His early life He studied political science, history and geography. He was a sponsor of
Yale University, one of the achievements he made was that he discovered the largely
forgotten Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. His parents were Hiram Bingham II, Clara
Brewster, These were some books he wrote, The Lost City of the Incas: History of
Machu Picchu and its Builders, Hiram died in Washington on June 6, 1956. born is
Honolulu (Hawaii) on November 19, 1875, Hiram Bingham was the son and grandson of
the first Protestant missionaries who arrived in the Pacific volcanic archipelago. An iron
discipline and an education aimed at a life as a missionary made Bingham's childhood
one of the saddest times of his life; He even stole $250 from the family account so he
could run away with a friend. In 1892 his parents took him to Phillips Academy in
Andover, Massachusetts, and he later entered Yale University. The family savings were
only enough for the young man to support himself for a year and he was forced to do a
multitude of jobs, from kitchen helper to candy and book seller at home, to being a
private teacher for the richest classmates. Despite all the difficulties, Bingham finally
managed to graduate from Yale in 1898.
