WHAT IS A TRACTION ELEVATOR?

● Traction elevators are efficient and suitable for high-rise structures.

● They use ropes and a counterweight system for vertical transportation.

● They operate by an electric motor pulling the elevator car through a system of

ropes and counterweights.

● Traction elevators provide a smoother ride compared to hydraulic elevators,

offering better control and precision in stopping at desired floors.

PARTS OF A TRACTION ELEVATOR
1. Elevator Car: The compartment that transports passengers or goods.
2. Counterweight: Balances the load of the elevator car, reducing the power needed for
operation.
3. Traction Sheave: A grooved wheel connected to the motor by a set of ropes, responsible for
moving the elevator car.
4. Motor: Provides the power to drive the traction system and move the elevator.
5. Governor: Safety device that regulates the elevator speed and activates the brakes in case
of overspeed.
6. Control System: Manages the elevator's movements, ensuring precise stops and smooth
rides.
7. Ropes or Cables: Connect the elevator car to the counterweight, passing over the traction
sheave, enabling vertical movement.

TYPES OF TRACTION ELEVATORS:

Gearless Traction A direct connection between the

Elevators motor and the traction sheave,
eliminating the need for gears.

Geared Traction

buildings.
Gearless traction elevators
offer superior energy efficiency,
quieter operation, and reduced
maintenance compared to geared
traction elevators. With their direct
drive system, they provide smoother
rides, higher speeds, and greater
capacity, making them ideal for
modern high-rise buildings and
luxury installations.

vs

Geared traction elevators

utilize a gear mechanism to move the
elevator car within the shaft. They are
cost-effective, moderate in speed, and
suitable for mid-rise buildings. While
they have a lower initial cost, they may
require more maintenance and can
produce more noise and vibration
compared to gearless traction
elevators.
