Tentative Thesis Brief:

With urbanization of Indian cities along the National Capital territory the NCR region has been on the forefront of development.
Bahadurgarh a small industrial city located on the western border of Delhi is a prominent place of residential and industrial
urbanscape which has seen rampant development and transformation within few years. With the connectivity of metro and the
pace of development is further increased. The city has acted as a feeder city to Delhi where majority of local population goes to
Delhi for work and jobs whereas the industrial growth has attracted a huge population of migrant workers. The presence of various
industries from heavy steel industries, chemical industries, to clothing and footwear factories the city plays a major role in
manufacturing a wide variety of consumer products, this industrial identity has provided Bahadurgarh with substantial economic
boost. These aspects have been major contributors in the growth of the city.

With these factors such as presence of industries and impact of the metro connectivity Bahadurgarh has proven to be on the
forefront of urban development which is evident in the transforming urban form of the city with opening up of various plazas and
major brands putting factory outlets the facilities of the city are ever-growing.

However, while a city grows there comes various major concerns such as safety, wellbeing and inclusivity, availability of facilities,
leisure spaces and walkability and ease of movement, fragmentation of spaces which are necessary to provide quality of life in a
city. These issue are very much visible in the city and its urban form as majority of spaces are either residential or commercial or
industrial with very less spaces of social vibrancy and places for leisure activity. The fragmentation of spaces, need of vibrancy and
leisure spaces result is the environment being unsafe.

The city with its growth and transformation provides an opportunity to design and envisage urban environments which caters to
the needs of the people and along with providing safety and wellbeing. The city growth lacks focus on the quality of life aspects
and absence of third spaces is a primary concern which is the dire need of the city, this lack of third spaces and social cohesion
has resulted in less inclusivity and hence the safety is also hampered.

With its transformative stage and development, the importance of addressing these concerns and creating safer and inclusive
urban environments paramount. This thesis explores the potential of vibrant third places and strategic placemaking in fostering
safer and inclusive urban environments within the context of Bahadurgarh. The thesis focuses on exploring the potentials of
developing industrial city through the lens of safety while catering to the needs of the city and intersecting with the literature of
concepts such as CPTED, defensible spaces by Oscar Newman, work place folk theory by Patrick Geddes and how these can be
applied in the same. The study delves in to the principle of strategic placemaking and aiming to understand how intentional design
and community engagement can contribute to the needs of people and help in creation of safer urban environments.

Thesis inquiry:

 How safety and inclusivity is an important factor to design a transformative city.

 How social vibrancy and third places are affected due to fragmentation of city.
 What are the needs of a city with rapid transformation and how safety plays an important role in city planning and
design?
 How third spaces and strategic placemaking leads to safety and inclusivity of an urbanscape.
