This new translation of Amritanubhava has been created by Gwenaël Verez, who
has been interested in the philosophies of ancient India, particularly the Vedanta,
since he was a teenager. He studied Hindi at the Institut des Langues et
Civilisations Orientales in Paris. He received his Self-realization in 1985 and has
been practising meditation ever since. He is the author of the book La Mère et la
Spiritualité published in 1995 and translated into several languages (in English
The Search for the Divine Mother).

I consider the Amritanubhava to be one of the great spiritual texts of Humanity. It is
unique in its treatment of non-duality the Advaita and it seems to me essential for
any seeker of Truth who wishes to deepen the knowledge of the Atman.
I decided to rewrite the book in English because the available versions sometimes
seemed rather difficult at first and, above all, did not reveal certain fundamental
spiritual notions such as Param-Chaitanya, the primordial energy.
To make this translation, I relied on three English versions1 and on the original in
ancient Mahrathi to make sure that the meaning was well preserved. However, this
work does not claim to be a perfect rendering of a 13th century text. I hope, however,
that its essence is preserved, at least that was my concern throughout this translation.
The Amritanubhava brings a deep and unparalleled knowledge to understand our origin
and our spiritual future. Jnaneshwara speaks of his experience of ultimate realization,
the Realization of God. He never mentions the Maya (phenomenal reality superimposed
on the Atman) and refutes the principle of ignorance covering the spiritual reality
(concept known as Adhyasa). In this sense, five centuries after Shankaracharya,
Jnaneshwara goes further than his famous predecessor by referring to the phenomenal
reality not as an illusion but as the creation of the primordial energy Param-
Chaitanya in which the Brahman is reflected. Thus, Jnaneshwara also rejects other
philosophical doctrines such as the dualism of Samkhya and the nihilism of Carvaka
which have been part of the intellectual and spiritual debate in India for three thousand
years.
The contribution of the work goes beyond the sensu stricto sphere of knowledge. Its
reading brings an authentic spiritual experience by raising our attention towards the
Atman, our absolute and divine identity. This is what I experienced when I read the
Amritanubhava for the first time and this is what I absolutely wanted to share.
I would like to pay tribute to the three English translations[1] that made me discover
this gem and also helped me rewrite this version. Above all, I would like to express my
deepest gratitude to Meera Sous who gave me access to the original text through her
translations of the ancient Marathi. Without her, I would not have been able to complete

Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi often spoke about Jnaneshwara.[3] She called him a great saint, a
great poet and a tremendous genius because, in thirteenth century India, he wrote descriptively
of the Kundalini and Self-realization.
Jnaneshwara also spoke of the nature of the realized soul as a person who, like the sun, is not
concerned about his own glory. He is simply contained within himself, contented and
complete.
If we know of him at all, it is probably because of his great book Jnaneshwari, a volume of
magnificent vision. In form and structure, it appears simply to be a commentary on the
Bhagavad Gita. In reality, it is much more than that. And surprisingly for a commentary,
considerably longer than the Gita itself.
Behold: what it is that you are holding in your hands at this moment is a jewel.

He is not only offering us an elixir distilled from his experience, he is also actually
giving us that very same experience the experience, not just the words. It is tasted in
the elixir that is this book.
Sip and you will know. Drink deeply and you will be satisfied.
But still, Jnaneshwara, as a man of the Spirit and as a poet, keeps you reaching
for more. Like Blake, like Kabir, like so many saints who gave us the poetry of their

day speech, Marathi. Very few knew Sanskrit. But he wanted everyone to know. And
now here is the same for you, in English.
Why should we read this book. Why now in this lifetime? Why today?
Not to read this book is to avoid the subject that is always on the table: the nature of
our true Self.
