1. Login and Register License
1.1 Tips of VSS platform
 Please contact Howen sales for testing on cloud server, or refer to Howen
VSS Service Manager Manual to install VSS platform on your server PC.
 The URL of VSS platform is http://IP address:9966
Such as http://47.252.16.64:9966

1.2 Login page

Login page of VSS contains the below:


 Account ID and password;
 Supported languages: English, Chinese, Spanish, Russian, French,
Vietnamese, Portuguese, Japanese, Arabic ( It is still updated...... )
 Download links for VSS desktop client ( please refer to Howen VSS Client
User Manual for more information ), Android VSS app and IOS VSS app.

1.3 Register license

After we install VSS platform on user’s server, user can add only 10 MDVR on
VSS as default, here are some steps for increasing more licenses in order to
add more MDVR:
1. Click Server module and enter License Management Menu
2. Click “Click to Get Application Code”
3. It will generate the Signature code. Copy and send to Howen sales or
support team.
4. Howen will revert the Signature code, input it.
5. Submit it.

2. Functions introduction

2.1 Main interface

The VSS main interface contains Menu bar, Device list, Video area, Status bar

and Map area:
 Menu bar contains all of function modules of VSS;
 Device tree shows relation net between fleets and devices;
 Video area displays video streaming for particular channels;
 Status bar informs real-time information of each device as well as multiple
counts;
 Map area displays real-time location of devices.

2.2 Dashboard

The Dashboard page contains total counter and device statistics.
 Total Counter: It shows the total number of devices, fleets, users have been added
on the server and the number of alarms have been triggered so far.
 Device Statistics: Each diagram shows one of the statistical analysis results
representing as charts, including Online Device Statistics, Alert Trend for the past 7 /
14 / 30 days, Alarm Statistics By Classifications and Device Alarm Ranking for today
or yesterday.

 Refresh Countdown: The countdown value refresh (seconds)


dashboard, VSS refreshes it every 180 seconds by default.
 Filter for Alarm Statistics: User can deselect particular alarm types to display alarm
statistics with ticked alarm types only.

2.3 Live video


2.3.1 Live video page

On this page, we can view vehicle status, GPS information, real-time video, etc.
1. ACC: When your vehicle’s ACC is on, it will light up
2. Play: Start video streaming.
3. Listen: Listen in audio of camera (Camera needs to support microphone).
4. Intercom: Launch a 2-way audio communication with driver.
5. Locate: Lock position of vehicle.
6. Geo fence: View all bound Geo-fence of device.
7. More: Display general information of device.
8. Sub or main stream: View video by sub stream or main stream, main stream will cost

more data but more clear.
9. Sound: Turn On/Off audio.
10. Screenshot: Take a snapshot.
11. Full screen.
12. Stop: Stop video streaming.
13. Pause: Pause video streaming.

2.3.2 Tool Bar


Double click online device or particular channels to view the video, green icons indicates
that device is online, red icons indicates that device is alerting.

The control options of live video are as follows:

: Play video by 1,4,5,9,16 ,36 windows

: Full screen

: Stop video streaming of all channels

: Start video streaming of all channels

: Pause video streaming of all channels

: Select smooth first or real-time playing,the real-time will require more internet
bandwidth, the smooth first will buffer a few seconds data then display it, therefore it will
be slow to play the video at the beginning.

2.3.3 Function menu

Right click the online device. There will be a pop-up menu list.
 Intercom: Launch a 2-way audio to drivers with intercom from platform.

Click Start voice dialog it will open another web page.

 Listen: listen in audio of camera (Camera needs to support microphone).


 Device Parameter: Configure parameters of the MDVR, it supports most commonly
configuration.

 Device restart: Remotely reboot the device, need to input your current VSS user’s
password to confirm.
 Device reset: Recover parameters back to factory settings, need to input your
current VSS user’s password to confirm.
 Fuel cut off: Turn on output1.
 Fuel cut recovery: Turn off output1.
 Power disconnected: Turn on output2.
 Power recovered: Turn off output2.
 G-sensor calibration: Calibrate the G-sensor of the vehicle remotely.
 Text issue: Release the text (words) to MDVR.

 Disk management: Disk will be formatted.

2.3.4 Status Bar
Status bar Includes
1. GPS info: real-time GPS info for those ticked units.
2. Event info:online / offline event.
3. Alarm:Normal Alarm, NOT DMS&ADAS alarm.
4. Active safety alarm(DMS ADAS)and total counter.

For alarm type and Active Safety Alarm, user could input a particular unit name and check
real-time alarm information.

2.3.5 Remote Control of PTZ


This function needs to connect PTZ camera with MDVR.

2.4 Playback page
In this page, we can play back the history video,query image,and replay tracks.

1. Select a vehicle that we want to play back.


2. Select date and time(can only choose one day)
3. Select the source type.
 Resource Type: Video,Track,Trip,Image,Audio

 Type: we can query Normal and Alarm video to play back.
4. Location
 Search Device: HDD/SD card of MDVR, when it is online, user could search.
 Alarm Server: Alarm videos and snapshots, timing snapshot from MDVR.
 Auto Download Server: Stores video files of auto download tasks (refer to chapter
2.9.9 Auto Download)
 Video Server: Stores video data of cloud server recording (refer to chapter 2.9.3.1
Add Vehicle - Basic Info)
5. Time range of historical video, double click on time line to play video.(Red line means
that device is alarming)
6. Along with video playing, map will display real-time tracks.
7. Switch to bar chart of speed and Tracks dot to view.

2.4.1 Tool Bar


The control options of replay are as follows:

1: 1 channel. 2: 4-channel. 3: 6-channel. 4: 9-channel. 5:16-channel. 6: Full screen.

After query history videos, it will list by timeline, double click on time line to replay. We can
download history videos as follows.

we can list the video files by file names as well by clicking the below button:

Besides, we can select a date to download a particular time range video.

2.4.2 Function menu

1. Main-Stream or sub-stream. HD is main stream.


2. Sound open: Turn On/Off audio function.
3. Fast-forward to play: Replay video by one times speed / two times speed / four times
speed / eight times speed / sixteen times speed.

5. Full screen.

2.4.3 Tracks replay


When we replay tracks, VSS does not need device be online, also VSS will highlight alarm
dots on tracks.

2.4.4 Trips replay


When we replay trips, VSS does not need device be online. moreover, VSS will display all

trips ( from ACC on and ACC off ) on the bottom of the interface, we could select particular
trips to view tracks of the trips.

Notice: This function need latest firmware of MDVR.

2.5 Event
You can check vehicle is online,offline event. And check other and AI alarms has been
triggered event.

1: Select a device (online and offline both can be selected)


2: Select a data (7 days, 30 days both can be selected)
3: Select an alarm (normal and AI alarms both can be selected)
4: Select a event and it will locate where that vehicle is.
5: Selected vehicle will be displayed on map.
6: Furthermore, we can export these events(It will be shown as an Excel)

2.6 Geo Fence
This page is for setting the below geographical areas.
1. Prevent vehicles enter a particular area, such as preventing trucks enter city
center.
2. Prevent vehicles leave a particular area, such as preventing taxis leave
operating district.
3. Various alarms in a different area by our setting.

Batch issue: Choose Geo-fence to issue bulk configuration.

2.6.1 Draw Geo-fence


Please check the below picture:

Click icon and name it (create a group for Geo-fence)

Click create a Geo-fence

1. Name a Geo-fence.
2. Select a type to edit the area (we can select Polygon, Poly-line and Circle)
3.Select a group or just set it a single Geo-fence.
4.write description.
5.Utilize mouse to draw on the map. (if want to wind up drawing, just double left-click)
6. Move the point in the middle to change the area.

After setting, click to refresh.

 Circle
1. Name it.
2. Select type.
3. Select a group.
4. Write description.
5.You can move the point in the middle to change area.

Same operation as polygon

2.6.2 Assign rules

Then this area and rule could be issued to the selected vehicles, we can click the
icon for a particular Geo-fence, then please check as below picture

1.Issue to vehicle.
2.Select vehicle you want to issue.
3.Set time range, one day or two time ranges one day.
4.Set alarm linkage for selected vehicles.

Time Mode: user can choose one day, or two time range in one day.
Alarm Type:
 Speeding alarm:

Speed threshold: The trigger speed for speeding alarm.


Duration: The wait time to trigger this alert.
 High Speed warning

Start and End Speed: The speed for start and end for trigger the alert.

Duration: The wait time to trigger this alert.
 Low Speed and Low speed warning: Same as High speed.
 Entry Area: At the setting time range, when vehicle enter this area.
 Out area: At the setting time range, when vehicle leave this area.

 Video Recording: Enable the record function of device.


 Video Lock: Lock the video in visible area of MDVR.
 Video Report: Upload the video clips to VSS.
 Linked I/O output: Support connect the output (such as Buzzer) in Serial cable.
 Snapshot and report: Upload snapshot pictures to VSS.
 Close network: Cut the current vehicle’s network (4G/WIFI).
 Turn off camera: Power off the MDVR’s cameras.
 Close TTS: N/A.

2.6.3 Delete the Geo-Fence


You can delete one device’s setting or all devices that have been released this rule.
Then MDVR side will delete also after a while.

2.7 Evidence
2.7.1 Evidence page
On this page, users can check the snapshot before and after the alarm videos are
uploaded to the platform.

Notice: There are two settings for uploading alarm snapshots and videos to VSS, one is at
VSS end, the other one is at MDVR end, then we can check snapshots and videos under

Evidence module.

At the VSS end:


We need to set Alarm Strategy in the Management menu of VSS, then VSS platform will
download alarm videos from device.

1. There are ten main alarm types: IO alarm, G-sensor alarm, Speed alarm, Video
alarm, Peripheral alarm, Geo-fence alarm, Device alarm, Platform alarm, DMS alarm,
ADAS alarm.
 IO alarm type: Input 1-6,output 1-2,distress signal, Abnormal opening and close
door.
 G-sensor alarm: Harsh acceleration, Harsh braking, Harsh cornering, Impact,
 Rollover.
 Speed alarm: Low speed, Over speed, Parking overtime, Harsh acceleration, Harsh
braking, Low speed warning, High speed warning, excessive idle, excessive RPM.
 Video alarm: Video lost, Motion Detection, Camera Covered, Camera anomaly.
 Peripheral alarm: Low Temperature, High Temperature, Humidity, G-sensor
alarm, Fuel consumption abnormal, People Counting, i-Button, Driver
Identification, Can-Bus Unavailable, Refueling, Fuel theft alarm.
 Geo-fence Alarm: Geo-fence Entry, Geo-fence Exit, Over-speed in Geo-fence,
Over-speed warning in Geo-fence, Low speed alarm in Geo-fence, Low seed warning
in Geo-fence, Forbidden parking engine ON, Forbidden parking engine OFF, Geo-
fence stay overtime, Geo-fence Pre-enter warning, Geo-fence Pre-exit warning.
 Device alarm: Storage Error, Ignition ON, Ignition OFF, GPS Signal Lost,Main unit
Opened, Vehicle Voltage Low, Vehicle Voltage High, Main Unit Power OFF, Main Unit
Power ON, Suspicious Disconnection, Abnormal Shutdown, Startup, GPS antenna
disconnected, GPS antenna connected, Towing, Freewheeling, Trip in Progress, Trip
Start, Regular Position, Trip End, Non-trip Position, GPS Signal recover.
 Platform alarm: Main Unit Anomaly.
DMS alarm: Fatigue driving, Phone call alarm, Smoking, Driver abnormal alarm,
Driver changed, Eye closed, Yawning, DMS camera cover,Distracted driving, Seat

belt not fastened, No driver, Drinking water, Driver shift, Driver return, IR-blocking
sunglasses, Driver identified successfully, Driver identification failed, Cannot detect
human face,Mask not worn.
 ADAS Alarm: Lane departure warning, Pedestrian collision, Frequent lane departure
warning, Traffic sign violation warning, Safe Distance, Front vehicle start, ADAS
speed down,Traffic sign recognition event, Forward collision warning, Headway
monitoring warning, Left lane departure warning, Right lane departure warning,
Low-speed forward collision warning.
2.After setting the download strategy, the platform will automatically download alarm
videos which are triggered during Alarm Time Range, then we can check on Evidence
module.

(1) We can also configure recipient email address for email notification, and we will be
able to get alert email with video URL:

At The Device End:
1: Set the relevant Alarm menu, and turn on the record function. For example, set an I/O,
then set Link_SET.

Attention:
For AI MDVR, no need to make setting for Alarm strategy, only need to set Link_set.

2: Choose RECUPLOAD and SANPPIC, it will upload directly.

For AI alarm, only support one channel.

3: Click the icon, set the search time to Today / Yesterday / 7 days / 30 days /
custom.

(1) Then click icon, there will be pop-up images ( alarm begin snapshot and alarm
end snapshot ).

(2) Next click icon, we will be able to share alarm video and snapshots through URL
and QR code.

(3) Click on the image as below, it will pop-up a new window on VSS, here we can play /
download / delete alarm video and alarm snapshots.

(4) While playing alarm video, we can click icon on the bottom right of vide to
screenshot, also we can decorate with mosaic on the screenshot as below.

2.8 Report
At this module, we can query and export sheet of any reports according to condition that
we set —— searching duration and device name.

Report Type: GPS, Alarm, Active safety Alarm(DMS&ASDS), Online-Offline, Mileage,


Fuel, Speed, Operation report, Passenger count, Driver report, Traffic flow report, Temp&
Humidity report, User.

2.8.1 GPS report


From the GPS report, we could get the basic information about device, such as GPS info,
recording status, video lost, satellites and ACC status.

1.Search GPS report.


2. Select a period time that we want to query report (could select 7 days, 30 days)
3. Input that device ID / name we want to query.
Search: Selected vehicle’s GPS report will be displayed.

After query, we can click icon to export report to an Excel sheet.

Click icon, there will be a pop-up window to display device location which it
alerted.

2.8.2 Alarm report


VSS will displays alarms information of selected device for a time range.

Attention: we have to select a device, otherwise we cannot search Alarm Details.

If we select alarm type, for instance select G-sensor alarm, it will show all of vehicle’s
G-sensor alarms.

Set the search time and device,then click search. The report will be displayed in the form
of histogram and pie chart.

Note: if we don’t select any vehicle, it will display all alarm of all vehicles

Need to configure speed alarm at MDVR side in advance, when device moves higher
than the set speed threshold of speed alarm, device will upload alarm to platform. (It
depends on the speed you set)

2.8.8.4 Harsh Acceleration report


Need to set speed up alert in speed menu at MDVR side first, when vehicle breaks this
rule, it will send alerts to server side, then we could search.

2.8.11.1 Data Traffic
Select device and configure traffic flow type (GPS packet, Live video, Playback, File
transfer, Alarm linkage download, Auto download) and Access mode ( Wired, WiFi, 5G, 4G,
4G, 2G )and so on, VSS will show data consumption of selected device.

2.9 Management

2.9.1 Management page


In this menu, we can manage user, fleet, vehicle (device) driver,alarm strategy, virtual
alarm, auto download, operation maintenance and Log management.

2.9.2 Fleet
We can add and modify fleet, or query fleet information.
Add Fleet: Add a new fleet, if there are lot of sub-fleet, we can set parent fleet as
main-fleet.
Notice: Need to add fleet first, then add vehicle (device).

: Query fleet information.

:Delete selected fleet.

2.9.3 Vehicle
we can add and modify vehicle ( device ), or query vehicle information.
Notice: Need to add fleet first, then add vehicle.

Add Vehicle: click this button, we can add device one by one,

2.9.3.1 Add Vehicle - Basic Info


After clicking Add Vehicle, there will be a pop-up application sheet:
Icon: Change device appearance on map.
Device No: Device ID, please notice device ID must be unique, we can configure device
ID at device end, and input the same as device No.
Device Name: We can input plate number of vehicle.
Device Type: Device Model, Select the one which is showed on device label.
Fleet: Select one fleet that user vehicle will be involved in.
Server Node: It is Server Node, if you have another Node.
Audio-video Count: Total camera channels, that is fine to keep default.C
Channel Name: The channel name will automatically displays according to the Device
Intercom Count: Total intercom channels, that is fine to keep default.
Input Number: Quantity of sensor inputs, input value as per device model, but that is fine
to keep default.
Output Number: Quantity of sensor outputs, input value as per device model, but that is
fine to keep default.
IO number: Total quantity of IO ( input / output ), input as per device model.
IO name: IO name will follow to how many I/O number that we select

2.9.3.2 Add Vehicle - More Info
We can input actual info on More Information part, or keep it default, do not select
Cloud Server Recording, it will cost a lot of data.

2.9.3.3 Add Vehicle - Traffic Flow setting


Flow setting ( Not mandatory ): input value to control data flow, it is for limiting data
consumption of device, when data consumption of device exceeds the set limitation, then
VSS will prompt any users who try to view the live video.

-1: Disable data traffic control;
0: Global default setting, find more details on chapter ;
A positive value: enable data traffic control.
Flow limit day: Daily data traffic limit.
Month data traffic limit: Monthly data traffic limit.
Traffic Flow Settlement Day: range is from 1 to 31 ( a whole month ), VSS will judge
whether data consumption exceeds Monthly limit of at this day per month.

2.9.3.4 Batch Add Vehicle

: fill in prefix, quantity range, device type and fleet, platform will
automatically fill in the Audio-video Number and other information.

2.9.3.5 Batch Add Vehicle by Excel sheet

: export the vehicle ( device ) information to excel file.

2. Use smartphone, adjust mode as 16:9, JPG/JPEG format;The background use white
color, if not, could use the Photoshop to process.
3. Mug-shot, just contains head and part of shoulder.Make them cover 70-80% area of
whole picture.
4. Use Windows' paint tool to adjust the size as 1280*720P.

 Download Strategy: use as how to download alarm videos from device:

1. Network Type: Wired, WiFi, 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, device will download alarm videos in
case of only selected network types.
2. Download Channels: Device will download alarm videos of selected channels.
3. Number Of Failed Download Retries: Retry times if VSS fails to download alarm
video like failure by poor network.
4. Time Between Retires: Interval between every two retries.
5. Alarm Time Range: VSS will download only the alarm videos that alarm occurs at this
time range, VSS will not download for those ones are out of the time range.

6. Pre Recording: VSS will download video of the set seconds before alarm.
7. Post Recording: VSS will download video of the set seconds after alarm.

Input recipient email address list and use commas to separate, VSS will send E-mail
notification with alarm video URL to recipients.

2.9.8 Virtual alarm
When a selected device generates ticked alarms for more than the set times during a set
period, the platform will send an email notification to the user.

Alarm Type: Tick alarm types which will generate this email notification after triggering.
Vehicle: Select particular vehicle.
Period: Configure alarm trigger period. Unit: minute
Alarm Count: Configure alarm count.
Alarm Push Service: Input email address that the virtual alarm email will be sent to.

For example:
If device 8008V2 triggers G-sensor and Speed Alarm alarm for 5 times during the latest
60 minutes as above screenshot, then VSS will send virtual alarm email to the set
recipient address:

2.9.9 Auto Download
This function is for automatically downloading videos of particular duration from device
when device is online.

2.9.9.1 Add Auto Download Task

: Click the Batch Add Icon, the following page will pop up. Select vehicles
or fleets, and configure Task Validity period and Task Parameter.

1. Permanent: Not permanent / permanent indicates one-time execution or


permanent execution. If not permanent, we need to set date range.
2. Date Range: The valid duration of this auto downloading task.

 Task Parameter
1. Daily execution time Range: This task’s execution time duration.
2. Task plan Type: Only once/ every Day/ weekly/ Monthly. If choose once, which
means current day and only execute download task one time during the setting time
range.
3. Resources time Range: The time of recorded file (footage) in HDD or SD card, which
need to be downloaded.

4. Resources in recent days: The range is from 0 ~ 30,0 means today, 1 means

yesterday and today. This setting is for set How many days videos saving in HDD/SD
card need to be downloaded.
5. Network Type: VSS will download videos only when device uses the selected
network types.
6. File Type: Normal Video File / Alarm Video File / Normal Snap File / Alarm Snap File
(snapshot) / Black Box File, we select any of them to download.

For example:
Execute time range: 11:00-18:00
Task plan type: Everyday
Resource time: 09:00-09:30
Resource in recent days: 1

This task means: The MDVR’s today&yesterday recorded video [09:00-09:30] will
be downloaded by VSS system from 11:00 to 18:00 everyday. If not finish the task, it will
continue to download next day.

1 & 2 & 3: create a batch upgrade task.


4: select the firmware which we uploaded as previous chapter.
5: name the batch upgrade task.
6: configure the expire date of the batch upgrade task like half a month.
7: configure the retry times in case of failure, it is recommended to set 80.
8: select particular fleets to execute this batch upgrade task.
9 & 10: click task name to view the progress of the selected batch upgrade
task, the batch upgrade task will be sending firmware file to the selected fleets
for update once devices come online until the set expire date.

These parameters will be configured when we install VSS central server package on a

This function is for the case which total vehicles quantity is more than 10000, and there is
a possibility to host more than one VSS server, then please reach Howen support team
for VSS node server package, and configure below on VSS central server.

This function use for configuring sender email address of VSS, so VSS will send email
notification by this email address.

Protocol: Input SMTP, IMAP or others, it is recommended to use G-mail of SMTP.


Host and port: Input as per users mailbox provider.
Username and password: Username is email address, password is verification code
(SMTP protocol will give a verification code when we enable SMTP on G-mail)
1. Click Submit to save setting.
2. Click Email Test so VSS will send a test email to Global Email Address ( need to
configure in advance ) by Email Address of Mailbox Setting

FYI: The part of sender&display name, which use for the proxy method to send Email.
If no need, ignore it.

2.10.2.7 E-mail content
We can customize E-mail content, Language, mail theme, content, Logo, signature
and so on.

3. Connect device to VSS


3.1 Set a unique ID for MDVR
Please go to MDVR MENU -- SYSTEM -- REGISTER INFO
Set a Device ID here. This number will be the unique ID to be registered on VSS platform.
we can use numbers and letters , and the length can be 1 ~ 12 characters.

3.2 Install SIM card and setup 3G/4G
We use 3G/4G network to access Internet in general. Install SIM card and connect 3G/4G
antenna. Go to MDVR MENU -- NETWORK -- DIAL SET, enable it and set the APN, and
input the User name as well as password accordingly.

Please go to MDVR MENU --INFO -- NEXT page to check the network connection status,
and make sure the Dial status is success!

3.3 Add device to VSS platform


Refer to chapter 2.9.2 Fleet and 2.9.3 Vehicle
