INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE DEFINITION Under supervision, to perform a variety of instructional and clerical duties designed to assist the instructor in tasks related to the students instructional program; may supervise students at recess and lunch periods; and to do related work as required, such as but no limited to, inventory of instructional materials and supplies. SUPERVISOR Direct supervision from the principal. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS Positions in this class are established by the teacher and related to classroom instruction, principally to assist teachers with instructional tasks and to relieve them of some clerical duties, which are non-instructional in nature; or to provide specific services to students as defined. Instructional Aides in these positions will carry out their duties with a minimum of direction. They will be expected to make independent judgments in seeking tasks through to completion, yet are able to follow through in implementation of training and instructional strategies. ESSENTIAL DUTIES Listens to and drills students in reading, spelling, mathematics, and other subjects according to instructions and guidance from an instructor. Reviews, and assists with maintenance of student progress records, discussing any program changes with instructor. Performs a variety of routine clerical and record keeping activities, such as filing out forms. Assists with activities of students on the playground and assists instructor in maintaining order, collects, assembles, files and distributes resource materials. Prepares teaching aides as directed. Sets up and arranges supplies and equipment and audio-visual equipment. Observes and records childrens behavior and other program data. May supervise students during the lunch period and recesses, at the lunch benches, and on the school grounds. Reports special behavior problems. Monitors students behavior in restrooms and other campus areas. Encourages and promotes courtesy among students. Observes that safety rules are obeyed. Performs related duties as required. Assists with site inventory and library materials. If assigned to a special project/program, instructional aide assists participants in specific areas needing remediation. Assists in maintaining student profiles.

Assists in providing diagnostic, prescriptive, and monitoring services to participants. Assists in the preparation of appropriate instructional materials. Assists in administering and scoring tests required for evaluation. Assists with the collection and maintenance of records. Participates in staff meetings and in-service programs as required by the program. Performs other tasks as required within the program scope.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Basic mathematics (advanced mathematics may be required of some positions) to be able to make arithmetical calculations with speed and accuracy. Knowledge of basic office equipment and operation. Knowledge of basic safety rules and habits including principles of first aid/CPR. Establish and maintain effective relationships with adults and children. Perform routine clerical work. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Work with individual and small groups of students. Supervise students at lunch and at play. Maintain acceptable standards of behavior among students. Promote student responsibility and positive leadership. EXPERIENCE Experience supervising students or with classroom assistance preferred. EDUCATION Equivalent to a high school education. AA/AS degree or coursework leading to AA/AS degree preferred. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions: Ability to lift, carry, push, pull objects frequently up to 20 pounds. Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle work with various materials and objects. LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operators License. Possession of a valid CPR and First Aid certification.
