‘Scale’
A scale is a group of pitches and often arranged in ascending/descending pattern of whole
steps and half steps. The scale is a foundation of music. All of the world’s music is built on some
kind of musical scale.
The most familiar today is based almost entirely on two scales. These are .............................
and ............................. . Music written with this scale is called ‘Tonal music’.

Major Scale
Major Scale including of an interval pattern of five whole steps and two diatonic half steps.
The half step always occurs between ........ and ........ tones /another between ........ and ........ tones
of the scale. There are 15 different major scales: 1 natural scale, 7 flatted, 7 sharps .

The order of Sharps and flats

No. flat 7♭ 6♭ 5♭ 4♭ 3♭ 2♭ 1♭
Order
accidental
No. Sharp 1# 2# 3# 4# 5# 6# 7#

if # is on the staff we can find the key by look at the last sharp then count up half step higher.
If ♭ is on the staff we can find the key by look at one before the last flat.

Minor Scale
There` is a simple and important relationship between major and minor keys, which always
have the same accidental (#,b). called ‘Related keys’. Both scales have same key signature but
different tonics. In fact, begin on the sixth degree of any major scale and follow note pattern for
octave, the result will always be a new, Natural minor scale. Unlike the major scales, each minor
scale has three different forms; Natural minor, Harmonic minor, and Melodic minor.

- Natural Minor, followed by the related key. the two half steps occur between 2 – 3 and
5 – 6. Which the seventh degree is a whole step below first degree called ‘subtonic’
instead of a leading tone. And it makes the tonic does not strong as a center of gravity.

- Harmonic minor, the different between natural minor and harmonic minor is that the
harmonic minor has borrows the leading tone of the parallel major scale. A pitch half
step below the tonic to replace subtonic. In technical terms, rise one half step up to
creating a real leading tone. And it makes a stronger harmony. The result of seventh
degree as a leading tone makes 6 – 7 three half steps in between. And still half step at
2 – 3 and 5 – 6.

- Melodic minor, the harmony that were create from harmonic minor also a melodic
problem. Degree between 6 – 7 were A2 (three half step). Which is difficult to sing or
play in tune. So melodic minor scale developed to avoiding A2. Ascending form, both
6 and 7 borrowed from the parallel major. Or we understand that sixth is raised one
half step. Sine the leading tone is need more often in ascending musical passage than
descending. The descending of melodic minor lowers both 6 and 7 which actually back
to natural minor. It helps to restore a minor sounding quality to the scale.
