The inerting or purging work can be carried out at sea or in a port if the ship provided with suitable equipment. In either case, the local regulations must be strictly abided by in consideration for the safety of purging the cargo vapor into the atmosphere. The inert gas made by combustion contains up to 15% CO2 and can not be used with some cargoes. In the case of loading other cargoes, the inert gas must be substituted again with pure nitrogen(N2) before the loading to maintain impurities other than N2 below the minimum conditions for loading the cargo. Sanoyas Hishino Me’ oration 5,000M3 LPG Operation Manual 13502(1)- 11 * Methods of inerting and purging 1. Displacement ‘This method makes use of the difference in vapor density between the gas in the tank and the vapor for inerting or purging. A light gas enters the upper part of the tank or is exhausted from this part and a heavy gas enters the bottom part or is exposited from there. An extremely distinct layer is formed between the two gases depending upon the difference in density. While most of hydrocarbon are heavier than inert gas. Nitrogen and inert gas have practically the same density, but at low temperature nitrogen is heavier. Although the amount of the vapor used for inerting and purging is less than that by others methods, the vapor must be fed under controlled velocity of flow in order to hamper such turbulence as will stratification. This method can be used for all types of tankers, and is most effective for tanks of least internal structures. Turbulence (Dilution or mixing) A large amount of a gas for inerting or purging is blown into the tank and mixed with the vapor already existing there The gas for inerting or purging should be vigorously blown so as to avoid forming separated pockets. Sanoyas Hishino Meisho Corporation 5,000M3 LPG Operation Manual 13502(1)- 12 2 Purging D 2) 3) Air should by Inert Gas or pure Nitrogen before unloading of the cargo ,the air in the tank is purged by an inert gas pure nitrogen gas until the concentration of oxygen in the tank lowers below the permissible concentration varies with the kinds of cargoes. Putting under cargo gas When cargo vapor is LPG(prapane, propylene,or butane), Butadiene or VCM , the cargo vapor is sent to the tank bottom through cargo filling line and the mixed gases of the cargo vapor and inert gas or nitrogen gas are vented to the shore side flare stack through vapor line. Purging gas or aeration for entering the cargo tank If the need for entering a cargo tank arises for the purpose of inspection or repais, first the gas must be purged from that tank with an inert gas or N2, after which the tank inside must be substituted with fresh air. When entering the cargo tank, measure the oxygen concentration in the tank and the oxygen concentration of 21% is the absolute conditions. When working in the tank for inspection or repair, sufficient ventilation must be provided at all time. Sanoyas Hishino Meisho Corporation 5,000M3 LPG Operation Manual 13502(1)- 13 All gas has the values of permissible threshold concentrations (TLV) for human body, The TLY value of various gases as follows: Name of cargoes TLV value Propane 1000 PPM Propylene 1000 PPM vVCM 10 PPM N-Butane 600 PPM I-Butane 600 PPM Butadiene 1000 PPM Butylene 1000 PPM Isoprene 1000 PPM For other information of the cargoes , refer to “ CARGO DATA SHEET “ Sanoyas Hishino Meisho Corporation 5,000M3 LPG Operation Manual 13502())- 14 5. CARGO HANDLING OPERATION 1. Loading operation 1) The cargo tanks are fitted with two different value of pressure relief Valve as states below. The changing of the set pressure should be carried out under the supervision of the master in accordance with procedures specified in the ship's operating manual , and be recorded in the ship's log. The set pressure of the relief valve should be indicated in the wheel house. Set pressure of relief valve : High pressure - 18.0 kg/em2 Low pressure - 13.0 kg/em2 Method of changing set pressure to be described in Separate Instruction Manual. 2) The states in the cargo tanks and cargo handling equipment must suit the condition for cargoes being loaded. 3) Preparation for cargo handling operation (1) To connect bonding cables. (2) To connect cargo hoses or loading arms (3) To start the electrically driven oil hydraulic pump for operating ESV installed in the motor room and open all ESV. (4) Purge the air from cargo hoses or loading arms between the ship and the shore with N2 or cargo vapor. (5) Line up all cargo valves in connection with the cargo handling. (6) This completes the preparation for cargo handling. If the N2 or Inert gas is filled in the ship’s tanks and cargo handling equipment, it must be substituted with the cargo vapor. Sanoyas Hishino Meisho Corporation 5,000M3 LPG Operation Manual 13502(1)- 15 4) Loading operation (1) To connect the vapor line between ship and shore in order to equalize ‘Tank pressure. (2) To start loading operation after complete equalizing. At the initial stage of loading , there is a possibility giving thermal Stress to the cargo tanks. (3) To check liquid level in the tank by level indicator during loading operation. ‘To carry out loading in accordance with Section 2. Cargo loading of this manual and exercise utmost care not cause overloading by all means. In order to prevent overloading, the liquid level for the load of each tank must be forehand be calculated. (4) When the loaded cargo reaches the specific amount, immediately stop loading in the piping into the ship tank by means of N2 or cargo vapor. ‘The N2 or cargo vapor of this case is supplied from the shore or this is carried out through the bypass lines for the liquid and gas on the tank under the pressure higher than the pressure in the tank by using the gas compressor of the ship. When the works are completed, immediately close the main valve of the tank. (5) When the stripping of the liquid remained in the piping into the tank is completed, close all the valves in the piping. (6) Lower the pressure down to atmospheric pressure by releasing the vapor in the cargo handling hoses or loading arms with the 1” blow valve of the loading manifold section. (7) To connect the cargo hoses or loading arms from install blind flanges and finally disconnect bonding cables, and this complete the cargo loading. Sanoyas Hishino Meisho Corporation 5,000M3 LPG Operation Manual 13502(1)- 16 @ All the tools used in the loading manifold and dangerous areas must be exercised so as not to allow sparking to occur during the work. 2. Discharging operation. Preparation of cargo discharging (1) To connect bonding cables. (2) To connect cargo hoses or loading arm. (3) To start up electrically driven oil hydraulic pump for ESV and to open main stop valve and ESV on the cargo pipe line. (4) Purging air remained in cargo hoses or loading arms between shore and ship with N2 gas or cargo vapor. (5) To line up all cargo valve on board. 2)To connect vapor line between ship and shore in order to equalize tank pressure. 3)Discharging (1) To close discharging valve for deepwell pump (2) Slightly open discharging valve for D.pump by turning valve handle about 1/4 turn and start up D.pump. (8) After start up D.pump,to open the discharging valve for D.pump gradually with turning valve handle and when the discharging pressure reaches the design point( tank press+120 or 110 +8.G - 10 kg/em2), (VCM or LPG), to stop turning valve handle to get continuous operation. Sanoyas Hishino Meisho Corporation 5,000M3 LPG Operation Manual 13502(1)- 17 (4) During cargo discharging operation, keep watching the discharging pressure gauge on D,pump and ammeter. If any abnormality is observed in the instruments(the pointers of the pressure gauge and ammeter oscillate) to reduce discharge rate with throttling valve in order to prevent pump cabitation phenomenon. Care should be taken to prevent damage of pump due to ca¥itation, When liquid level reaches near the tank bottom, to reduce flow rate with throttling the discharge valve to obtain sufficient pumps N.PS.H. (6) When the liquid level in the tank lowers excessively and the pump runs under no-load, the pointer of the pressure gauge on the pump discharge will swing largely. And the running sound of the pump will be changed. If the pump is kept running in such condition,it causes serious damage of pump. The pump must be stopped immediately when such condition is observed. (6) After completion of discharging operation, the cargo liquid remained in the pipelines to be send to shore tank with pressurizing by cargo compressor. (7) After complete the above handling operation, to close all cargo valve associated to cargo tank and pipes. (8) Lower the pressure down to atmospheric pressure be releasing the vapor in the cargo handling hose or loading arm through the 1” of blow valve. (9) To disconnect cargo hoses or loading arms and put blind flanges on the end of cargo pipes at manifold and then disconnect bonding cables. Sanoyas Hishino Meisho Corporation 6,000M3 LPG Operation Manual 13502(1)- 18 4) Cargo transfer by cargo compressor This ship is equipped with one set of cargo compressor on board. The cargo can be transferred with pressurizing cargo tank by cargo compressor when the deepwell pumps fails. 5) Disposal of cargo liquid remained in the pipeline and cargo vapor in the cargo tank. (1) Disposal of cargo liquid in pipeline. After complete loading or discharging operationcargo liquid remained in the pipeline is sent to ship tank or shore tank with adding higher pressure to the liquid line by cargo compressor through bypass line. (2) Disposal of cargo vapor After complete stripping operation, the remained cargo vapor in the tank to be sent to shore tank by cargo compressor through vapor line or bypass line. Sano) 5,000M3 LPG Operation Manual 13602(1)- 19 6 MANUAL FOR HANDLING CARGO TANKS AND EQUIPMENTS. 1. ‘The following must be observed in order to protect the cargo tanks against thermal stress due to temperature change. ‘To equalize pressure between shore and ships tank to prevent rapid temperature change. At initial stage of cargo loading, slow loading flow rate should be required with throttling main valve on the tank in order to avoid rapid temperature change. When the some quantities of cargo liquid is accumulated in tank bottom, the cargo valve to be fully opened to obtain normal flow rate. Cargo handling equipment’s 1) Deepwell pumps This pump is a type of vertical turbine having inducer and impeller in the bottom of tank and driven by explosion proof type of electric motor. Tandem types of double mechanical seals are providing at the upper part of the pump. The first stage of the mechanical seals is sealing cargo liquid and second stage of mechanical seals for sealing quenched oil. The intermediate shafts are supported by the beating at the several points and lubricated with cargo liquid. NPSH is very important for safety operation of the pump. Less NPSH than the required value causes pump cavitation. ‘There is a possibility to damage pumps due to reduction of cargo flow, vibration or erosion caused by the cabitation. The NPSH of this pump is 300 mm under the rated flow at the inlet of the first impeller , but this pump is capable of drawing liquid up to the level of the end of bell mouth when its discharge rate is adjusted. For the detailed handling and precaution of the pump , refer to the INTRODUCTION MANUAL of the cargo pump: Sanoyas Hishino Meisho Corporation 5,000M3 LPG Operation Manual 13602(1)- 20 LOW AMPS CUT When the pump is kept operated despite the occurrence of cabitation owing to the excessive lowering of the liquid level in the tank during unloading and without any remedial measure against this , this low amps cut detect the current value of low load, causes a timer to actuate and automatically stops the pump in 3 seconds after. OVER CURRENT CUT In such a case when the pump is operated above its rated value or when the pump is abnormally overloaded owing to the trouble in its rotating parts during discharging. This overcurrent cut detects the overload value and automatically stops the pump in order to protect the intermediate shaft and motor of the pump. 2) Cargo compressor (1) This compressor uses special Teflon for its piston rings , and special carbon for its cylindrical parts and piston rod sliding parts, It is of a perfectly oil-less system and is designed to prevent the inclusion of lubricating oil into the gas handled. ‘The distance piece parts and piston rod sliding parts are provided with V ~ ring devices by which these parts are forcelubricated to provide perfect sealing construction. Therefore , in order to prevent the damage in the oil-less parts and prolong the life , the vapor to be sucked must be clean and dry. For this purpose, a scrubber tank containing a demistar is provided on the suction tank side to remove the liquid mist and dust in the vapor. A buffer tank and bypass valve for starting are provided on the discharge side to prevent pulsation and to lower the starting this compressor , open the drain valve provided to the compressor body, and the drain valve of the scrubber tank and buffer tank, and completely remove the drain from the inside of the cylinder Sanoyas Hishino Meisho Corporation 5,000M3 LPG Operation Manual 13502(1)- 21 chambers and from each tank. After this, check the open and close positions of all the valves and start this compressor by fully opening the bypass valve for starting. In case the abovementioned drain removal before the starting is not sufficient or when the liquid flows into the compressor cylinders owing to miss-operation of valve, liquid compassion will occur and this leads to serious accident and therefore sufficient care must be paid. A pilot valve is provided between the buffer tank and the suction piping and is regulated to maintain the differential pressure at 4.0 kg/em2, When the differential pressure exceeds 4.5 ke/cm2, this pilot valve actuates to operate the unloader provided to the suction valve to run the compressor under no load, by which the abnormal rise in the discharge pressure is prevented. ‘The uniloader device is designed to be operated both manually and automatically. When the differential pressure above 4.0 kg/em2 is required it is necessary to disable the unloader by closing the valve before the pilot valve. In this case, the differential pressure must be kept within maximum 7.0 kg/em2 _,and if exceeding of horsepower occures, the compressor must be operated by single action(60%) by manually operating the unloader. (2) The liquefied gas vapor is likely to condense owing to compression by piston at the extreme of cold weather and therefore, pay attention to the flow rate and temperature of cooling water. Also occasionally remove the drain so as not to allow liquid compression to occur. (8) Since this compressor is double acting under an oil-less system, sealing is effected by the gland packing and V-ring devices, but when the pressure in the cylinders goes negative, there is possibility of entry of air into the clinders and this is extremely dangerous , therefore, suction must not be started unless the suction pressure becomes less than 0.5 kg/em2. Sanoyas Hishino Meisho Corporation 5,000MS LPG Operation Manual 13502(1)- 22 (4) For the detailed handling and precautions of this compressor, see INSTRUCTION MANUAL for the compressor. (5) Accessories of the compressor A) Suction tank with demister Lset Capacity 20.31 m3 Dimensions :5501D. X 1512H Design pressure : 20.0 kg/cm2 ‘This is a tank provided at the compressors suction side in order to remove liquid drops and dust from the vapor by centrifugal force and separation by the demister when sucking the vapor from the land storage tank or the ship tank for operation of the compressor. ‘The vapor from the land tank or the ships tank enters the suction tank from its side, and it caused to rotate in the tank ,so that moisture and dust may be separated by centrifugal force. ‘The vapor, further entering the demister provided at the top of the suction tank,is separated again and is sucked into the compressor. Before starting the operation, the separated and condensed liquid should be discharged from the drain tank. B) Cushion tank Lset Capacity 20.31 m3 Dimensions : 850 LD X 1553 H Design pressure : 20 kg /cm2 ‘This tank is provided on the discharge side of the compressor in order to prevent pulsation of the discharge side pressure of loading compressor. The tank is furnished with a safety valve to prevent overcompression. (2) Alarm and automatic closing of emergency valve dew to abnormal drop of sea water flow rate. (2) Required sea water flow rate :500 ton /h (at 18°C) 5,000M3 LPG Operation Manual 13502(1)- 24 4). Instrumentation 1) Thermometer ‘Three thermometer are attached to each cargo tank, two for measurement of liquid temperature, and the other for vapor temperature. ‘The measurement of liquid temperature, the temperature sensing part is at a position about(0:22m above the tank bottom, and the other one 6i8ith meters below the tank top for measurement of vapor temperature, the sensing part is located about(@J8ith meter below the tank top. ‘The thermometer is mercury expansions type ,in which the mereury filled in the temperature sensing part is transmitted to the dial gauge through the upper lead. ‘Therefore, the load running up to the dial gauge should be made as smooth as possible. 2)Pressure gauge One pressure gauge is attached to each cargo tank to measure the pressure inside the tank. The range of measurement is from 76 Hg to 35 kg/em2. 3) Float type level gauge One float type level gauge is attached to each cargo tank to measure the level of liquid in the tank, and the level is shown in dial type display on the at site. 4) Slip tube type level gauge One set of level gauge, consisting of two pieces for measuring the upper part, lowest part of the tanks furnished to each tank. ‘This instrument is a special level gauge intended to measure the level by utilizing the pressure in the tank. The construction is as shown in drawing No.ST-7-D when cover (10) is removed, and handle (2) is loosened ,the cargo is injected Sanoyas Hishino Meisho Corporation 5,000M3 LPG Operation Manual 13502(1)- 25 out of the nozzle. As long as the lowest end of the ship tube is in liquid ,the liquid is injected from the nozzle in atomized form; while it is in the vapor zone ,colorless gas will be injected from the nozzle. ‘To measure the level ,loosen the handle to inject gas from the nozzle, and pull up the slip tube to the maximum extent. After making sure colorless gas is injected from the nozzle, lower the tube slowly. When the end of sliptube reaches the liquid level, the injected gas changes to a white fume. At this position, stop lowering ,and tighten the handle and read the graduation cut in the slip tube at the foremost end of the indicator(13). This reading is the level height from the tank bottom. Meanwhile, sample can be taken from the nozzle of the siip tube. The scale cut of the slip tube is graduated in 5mm intervals and the CM unit figures are written in 100mm intervals. ‘The graduations and scale figures refer to the dimensions from the tank bottom to the end of sliptube. Since the thickness of the tube plate is a thin 6mm in inside diameter, the tube should be lifted or lowered with care not to bend it when measuring. Slip tube never is used when carrying VCM&Butadien, Isoprene. 5) Monitoring panel ‘The alarm and safety system is the facility designed to achieve safe handling and during navigation through visible alarm, remote contro] monitoring and safety control in conformity with the IGC codes that the cargo condition in the cargo tanks and running condition of the pump or compressor can be observed in the panel installed in the wheel house. a) Pressure alarm in the cargo tank Pressure switches are mounted on the cargo tanks. Sanoyas Hishino Meisho Corporation 5,000M3 LPG Operation Manual 13502(1- 28 7. INFORMATION ON CARGOES 1. Basic knowledge of information on cargoes. The knowledge relating to the physical and chemical properties of liquefied gases as well as their danger and the measures to be taken in the event of emergency are indispensable for the sake of safe job. The following give the quittance for the captain and all the staff in concern in using the information on cargoes in order to assure safety. The master must confirm the correct chemical name if the intended cargo to be loaded as early as possible, and if he considers that the contents of the date sheets relating to this cargo are not enough he must try to acquire sufficient additional information. The master and the staff in concern must scrutinize the information and data on all the cargoes that are intended to be loaded and other reference items and have full knowledge on their properties. The master must confirm that the cargoes to be leaded and their characteristics are included im conformance certificates and the manuals relating to loading and stability and that they are within the special limits. ‘The master and the staff in concern are required to be forehand confirm at least the following data with each cargo. 1) Emergency measure All the staff in concern must receive basic training for emergency measure. 2) Data relating to fire and explosion 3) Chemical data Possibility of causing dangerous results owing to chemical reaction. 4) Health date ‘The danger to human body in case human contracts the liquid or vapor of the cargo. Sanoyas Hishino Meisho Corporation NS 2 S 5,000M3 LPG Operation Manual 19502(1)- 29 5) Physical data Special gravities Vapor pressures and coiling points Vapor density Explosion limits . Simultaneous loading of dissimilar kind liquefied gases One product shall be carried at a time and no provision for segregation of different cargoes are fitted. Simultaneous loading the different kinds of product which may cause reaction with each product must not be carried. . Polymerization This refers to the phenomenon in which a molecule of a certain specific compound is bound to a larger unit by including from to several tens molecules. This unit is called a polymer. Because of this, the certain compound changes from free flowing liquid to viscous liquid or solid. When this phenomenon occurs, a large quantity of heat is released. In some instance, polymerization takes place spontaneously without depending upon any external influence. In some other cases, polymerization occurs when the compound is heated or is added with impurities. Polymerization is some time dangerous under a certain kind of conditions. . Permissible concentrations The permissible concentration(TLV) refers to the maximum density of gases , vapor , mist of splash at which no harm is given to almost all the crew when they are exposed to such gas , vapor , mist of splash repeatedly and uniformly over a long period of time. The permissible concentrations or the concentrations below this will n some cases give uncomfortable feel to the crew or aggravate symptoms depending upon personal differences.
