2 ZVRT Short-Circuit Current

2.1 Introduction

When grid voltage drop occurs, the output current of the inverter will change
correspondingly. In the first 1 to 2 cycles, the output current will oscillate and produce
a peak current obviously larger than the rated current. Subsequently, the inverter will
keep connected with the grid and output stable reactive current to support the grid. In
this process, the impact of peak current on the grid and the support of stable reactive
current on the grid are the key factors for power grids, and corresponding parameters
need to be provided before grid simulation analysis.

There are many kinds of faults that lead to voltage drop, such as three-phase
symmetrical short circuits, two-phase short circuits and single-phase to ground short
circuits. Among them, three-phase symmetrical short circuit of the grid is the most
serious fault leading to power grid voltage drop, which can make grid voltage drop to
0. At this time, the peak inverter output current and reactive power support current are
greater than those under other fault types. The ZVRT short-circuit current described in
this paper is the output current of the inverter when the grid voltage drops to 0 during
three-phase symmetrical short-circuit fault.

The standard IEC 60909 defines the characteristic value of inverter short-circuit current
during power grid short-circuit: peak short-circuit current Ip, and steady-state short-
circuit current Ik, where:
(1) Peak short-circuit current IP indicates the maximum impact of short-circuit current
on power grid during grid voltage drop.
(2) Steady-state short-circuit current IK indicates the grid-supporting ability of the
inverter during grid faults.

2.2 Test Results

The ZVRT short-circuit current test waveform of SG1100UD inverter is shown in the
following figure when three-phase symmetrical short-circuit of the grid occurs.

Fig. 1 Short Circuit Current Waveform

The characteristic values of the test waveform are shown in the following table.

Tab. 1 Short Circuit Current Characteristic Values

Model of the Peak Short Circuit Steady-State Short Circuit Current

SG1100UD-20 <2400A 1010

Imax, the maximum reactive current that SG1100UD can output during ZVRT is
1160A(1010A for SG1100UD-20), which is the same as the steady-state short-circuit
current value in the test waveform.

For 1 + X series inverters composed of N sets of SG1100UD, the characteristic value

can be calculated according to N times of the corresponding characteristic value of
SG1100UD.
