Last applicable edition + ASME B-31.3 latest applicable edition) = UNE-EN:ISO 9712 Last applicable edition 4.0 PERSONNEL CUALIFICATIONS ‘The operators and inspectors will be qualified in accordance with the requirements of UNE-ENISO 9712. It is compulsory that the person that performs testis qualited as level | and who qualifies the indications is qualified Level I (minimum), 5.0 PENETRANT MATERIALS “The products to be used for detecting discontinuities by Liquid Penetrant may be BRENT IBERICA S.A. 6 MAGNAFLUX SA. ones. Other Manufacturers may be used if their products have similar characteristics. ‘When using penetras on austenitic stainless steel or nickel-base alloys, inspection products must be certified on sulphur and halogen contents, according to point -641 ASMEV. Art 6. Procedure N™: END-PT-3471 ScI foal Page 12 of 18 GENERAL PROCESSING DESCRIPTI The testing process consists on the application of a penetrant liquid over the surface of the part beng tested and allowed to enter discontruites by capillary. ‘Aller a suitable time, the excess surface penetrant is removed by using a solvent- remover and the parts dried. A developer is then applied and it wil ray the lenirapped penetrant cut ofthe discontinuity, by uescent or colour contrast ‘As a standard technique, the temperature of the penetrant materials and the surface ofthe part to te processed should be between 6° and 52 °C.. When itis not possible to comply with this temperature limitations, the procedure wil be homologated at the temperature of intended use as described in ASME V Art. 6, 7-653, using a liquid penetrant comparator-block. ‘The sensitveness ofthe diferent techniques will depend mainly on cleanness and roughness of the surfaces to be tested, ype and location of the possible tlscontiuites to be detected and contrast capability of the penetrant tobe used. ‘There are two differnt techniques to be applied in the Liquid Penetrant Inspection = Liquid Penetrant Inspection by "Colour Contrast Penetrants” = Liquid penetrant inspection by "Fluorescent Penetrents” LIQUID. PENETRANT INSPECTION BY “COLOUR CONTRAST PENETRANTS". Color Contrast Penetrants Technique applies penetrants which are visible under white ight with ight intensity over 1000 Lux The intensity of white ght (natural or artificial) must be measured with a lux meter with a white light probe prior tothe evaluation of the indications Light meters shall be calibrated onoe a year or whenever the meter has being repaired. ‘This technique is very sensiive to detect small discontinuities and it may be ‘applied on anodized pieces, Colour Contrast Solvert-Kemovable Penelvants willbe applied for this technique. Procedure N*: END-PT-3471 Rev.00 a MAR-2017 Page 13 0f 18 LIQUID PENETRANT INSPECTION BY "FLUORESCENT PENETRANTS". Fluorescent Penetrants Technique applies penetrants that are visible under black light (365 nm), with at least 1000 uW/em* onthe inspection surface “The intensity of ultra-violet ight must be measured prior to the evaluation of the indications Light meters shall be calibrated once a year or whenever the meter has being repaired. “The inspection vl be done in @ camera or dark area, using an ultraviolet lamp. “The minimum intensiy of ultraviolet ight will be 1000 yWW/em? on surface being tested. The person who performs the examination should also remain 1 min inside the dark chamber to adapt his vision to the new ligt intensity Fluorescent Solvent Removable Penetrants willbe applied fortis technique. “The Inspection procedure is dlvided in five stages: precleaning, penetrant _appication, removal af excess ponetrant, developing and inspection, and post- cleaning, ‘1.0.- EXAMINATION PROC! TA PRECLEANING ‘This ist stage isthe came for both techniques, Prior the examination all the welded seams or eas of parts to be examined, and all adjacent areas vithin at least 1 in (25 mm) shall be dry and free of any rus scale, welding flux, spatter, grease, paint or any other strange material that might interfere with penetraton. Precleening will be performed by machining, grinding, wire-brush (stainless ste! wire-brush shall be applied for inspection on austenitic stainless. steel components), or by wiping the surface with clean cloths lightly moistened with rganic solvent. Afte" cleaning, drying of surfaces to be examined shall be ‘accomplished by normal evaporation with forced hot or cold air. Before starting the inspection 6 minutes shal be waited, minimum, forthe compiete evaporatint ofthe solvents used. Meta-removing processes such as dipping or sanding are forbidden. Procedure N: END-PT-3471, Rev.00 MAR-2017 Page 14 of 18 17.2 PENETRANT APPLICATION * Penetrant applicaton_Is the same for Contrast Color Penetrants and for luorescent Penetrants All the surfaces to be ‘ested wil be wholly covered with the penetrant product. It may be applied to the surface being tested by brushing or spraying. After application special care shal be taken fo avoid creating pools of penetvant Ispraying is used, fiters shall be placed in te ai inlet ofthe ai-compressor. ‘After application, penetrant wil remain on the part fora time between 10 and 20 ‘minutes to allow proper penetration into defects. 7.3. REMOVAL OF EXCESS PENETRANT. ‘This stage is the same for Colour Contrast and Fluorescent Penetrants ‘After penetration time, any penetrant remaining on the surface shall be removed. Excess solvent-removable penetrants shall be removed by wiping with a cloth or absorbent paper, repeating the operation until most traces of penetrant have been removed. Then the remaining traces shall be removed by lightly wiping the ‘surface with cloth or atsorbent paper moistened with solvent. Do not use excess of solvent to avoid penetrant to be washed out of discontinuities. Spraying solvent on the surface being tested after penetrant ‘application or before developer application i totally forbidden. CCheck there is no trace of penetrant on the surface, by passing a dry cloth of absorbent paper over tie eurface, In the case of fluorescent penetrants, the inspection shall be carried out with Ultraviolet light with a minimum light intensity of 3 Wim, And maximum white light intensity of 100 lux Before developer appication, surfaces must be completely dry. This could be achieved by normal evaporation of solvent or wiping. 7.4. DEVELOPING AND INSPECTION. ‘This stage i the same for Colour Contrast and Fluorescent Penetrants Developing willbe carted out using a developer in a non-aqueous solvent which ‘evaporates on the surface, This developer shall be applied by spraying after vigorous agitaion Procedure N*: END-PT-3471 Rov.00 ae MAR-2017 Page 15 of 18 Developer shall be applied as soon as possible after penetrant removal, so that surfaces tested and adjacent areas are covered wih a thin and uniform fim of powder, Spraying shal be done slowly and in an uniform way from a distance not hotter than 250 mm. fom the surface. itis possible, do not spray verticaly on the surface of the piac to avoid drops on it Watch the surface while applying the developer, to contol the behaviour of the indleations which are bleeding with intensity. “The final interpretation wil be carried out 10 1 G0 minutes after the solvent of the developer has dried 7.8. POST CLEANINS. ‘When the test finishes, all examined surfaces shal be cleaned with clean and dry cor moistened with solvent cloths, or by bathing the pieve in sovent. 8 LUATION OF INDICATI The final interpretation will be made between 10 and G0 minutes after the drying ofthe solvent in which the developer powder is suspended, making sure ‘to comply with the Levels of llumination described in 6.0. In case of using Fluorescent Penetrants, the final interpretation vil be made in 2 camera or dark area, using an ultraviolet ight lamp making sure to comply ‘ith the levels of liumination described in point 6, The examiner will be in the dark area atleast § minutes before the exam. If he wears glasses, the glasses will not be photosenstive. ‘An indication of an imperfection may be larger than the imperfection that causes ‘it; however, the size othe indication isthe basis for acceptance evaluation ‘An indication isthe evidence of a mechanical imperfection, Only indications with their bigger dimensiens greater than 1,5 mm (1/16 in.) shall be considered relevant. Relevant indications are classified as: - Linear indication: ig one having a length greater than three times its wit, - Rounded indication: is one of circular or eliptical shape with the Fength equal to or less than three times its width Procedure N*: END-PT-3471 SCI es Page 16 of 18 ‘Any questionable or coubtflincications shall be re-examined to determine i they are relevant or not. Broad areas of Muorescence or pigmentation are not alowed ‘and shall be cleaned and re-examined. 8.0.
