Ans: The Dominican monk who serves as the Inquisitor at Joan’s trial, he knowsshe is
innocent but at the same time recognizes that her very existence is a challenge tochurch
authority. Canon John D’Estivet – The prosecutor in Joan’s trial, he is narrow-minded and
determinedto see her burn. The Inquisitor plays a large role in the trial. His problem was not
with Joan, but rather, her Protestant heresy. something completely unacceptable to the
Catholic church.
4. Explain why Susan B Anthony refused to pay the penalty.

Ans: On November 5, 1872, American civil rights activist Susan B. Anthony

voted in a presidential election. (She voted for the incumbent, Republican
Ulysses S. Grant.) At that time, women were not allowed to vote. Two
weeks later, Anthony was arrested, and eventually fined $100 for voting
illegally. “I shall never pay a dollar of your unjust penalty,” she said—and
she never did.

5. Did St Joan received fair trial? Explain in brief.

Ans: Any analysis of the trial and its circumstances makes it pretty clear that the answer
is "no". The trial was political and was heavily biased towards the wishes of the English,
who simply wanted Joan dead. It was presided over by the Burgundian bishop Pierre
Cauchon, who repeatedly rigged elements of the trial to get the outcome that his English
masters wanted. Even when she was convicted but then recanted he continued to pursue
her execution, assuring the English "We will have her yet" she was condemned because
she "claimed to hear the voice of God directly" is factually wrong. She made no such
claim, claiming only to have has visions of St Michael, St Catherine and St Margaret. It is
also nonsense that claiming to have visions was immediately heretical because this
somehow meant she was "needing no priests to intercede for her". The Church believed
in the possibility of genuine visions and this stuff about the intercession of priests is
found nowhere in the detailed record of the trial and was not Church doctrine anyway.
Joan was actually convicted on some fairly flimsy theological grounds due to deliberately
tricky questions by learned men determined to trip up a peasant girl.

If she was so clearly a heretic then the rehabilitation trial held postumously 24 years later
would not have been able to declare her innocent. And if the Church had such a problem
with her, as Adams also erroneously claims, they would have had no incentive to do so,
let alone make her a saint. But the rehabilitation was easily made because the original
trial was so clearly biased and technically botched.

So no, she did not receive a fair trial in any sense. It was a political stitch-up from start to
finish and rigged to achieve one result - her execution.

6. Explain ‘deficiency’ under the Consumers Protection Act.

Ans: According to Section 2(11) of the Consumer Protection Act 2019 (“the Act”),
deficiency is any sort of fault, imperfection, shortcoming or defect in the feature, quality,
amount, nature, worth, authenticity, capacity and standard which is obligatory to be
maintained and regulated as per the laws and statutes in function or any agreement/contract
claimed by the seller, with respect to the products and goods. Including any act of negligence,
omission or commission by the seller which causes loss to the consumer, which a prudent
seller is supposed to do or is supposed to omit, but deliberately does the contrary, such
actions amount to ‘deficiency of service’. These definitions help to understand the clear
meaning of deficiency in services. Whenever there is any sort of deficiency in services, the
customer is exploited which impacts and causes loss of money. Any kind of negligence or
omission or commission can cause injury to consumers.

30. Personality is a lend itself to one possessed of self-confidence. What is self-
confidence? It is a state of mind entirely sure of its own thoughts and actions whether
right or wrong. Believe in yourself and in this belief, you will grow more and more
confidence in yourself. Surety invokes the approval of others, the needed
encouragement to greater confidence. The most effective and beneficial influence
towards this end is the understanding gained by experience of life so that you can see
life in its true proportion and realize that it is not enough to be fine; one must be
fitting and know that alone is the fittest who takes the least cognizance of what others
opinion of him is. It is the fear of other opinion that binds and imprisons one, while it
Page 10 of 10

is fearlessness of that opinion that gives one one͛ s freedom. If we desire that our life
should make a fascinating appeal and be full of charm. We must have personality. It is
not a thing reserved for the gifted. It can be had by any who wills to have it. But the
will must be strong enough to endure the most discouraging experiences, for nothing
that is worth hearing can be gained with ease, and of all the goals in life, personality is
the most difficult to gain precisely as it is the greatest prize to win. Make a precise in
4-5 lines and give a suitable title.
