Training

Federal law
requires you to
be trained and
authorized to
operate this lift
truck.

This manual is
not a substitute
for training.

The Operator Manual is intended to be a

reminder of the operator’s training. That
training should include all of the safety
statements, warnings, and cautions
regarding the use of this lift truck.

To attain the highest efficiency and safest

operation, Toyota strongly encourages, and
Federal law requires, that operators be
properly trained before operating this lift
truck.

There is a summary of the training

requirements under “Selected OSHA
Regulations” on page 93 of this manual.

Read and obey all warnings, cautions, and

instructions in this manual and on the lift
truck.

Safety Requirements
WARNING: Industrial equipment can be
hazardous.

Powered industrial equipment can be

hazardous. This lift truck is not like an
automobile. It does not drive, steer, or stop
like an automobile.

Lift truck accidents often result from:

• Careless operators
• Untrained and unauthorized use
• Poor maintenance

Your lift truck is part of a material handling

system that has three parts:

• The operator
• The lift truck
• The workplace environment

Safe operation of your lift truck requires:

• Your knowledge, training, skill, and

attitude
• Active and attentive supervision to
reinforce correct operational behavior
• Good lift truck maintenance
• A safe workplace with an appropriately
configured lift truck

Toyota 8HBW23 5
Safety
Certain optional features enhance the
operation of your lift truck in special
conditions.

Options
Options are available for the Model 8HBW23
lift trucks. Options may include devices
such as travel alarms, cold storage
conditioning, load backrest guard,
2-position keyed Main ON/OFF switch, and
a variety of load wheels and poly tires. Not
all options are available on all trucks.

One or more of these options may be

appropriate if your operating environment
contains special conditions. Please note that
since the use of some of these features could
create potential hazards that would not exist
in their absence, they should be selected
only after careful consideration.

For more information, please refer to the

Toyota Accessories Brochure.

For complete information, please contact

your local authorized Toyota Industrial
Equipment dealer.

Click-to-Creep Mode
This lift truck is configured with
Click-to-Creep. The speed may be configured
to allow creep travel up to 2 mph (3.2 km/h)
with the tiller arm in the fully raised
position. This feature may be useful in
confined areas for limited truck operation
(for example: right angle stacking in highway
trucks or trailers).

WARNING: Make sure there is enough

space to prevent you from being trapped
between the lift truck and nearby objects.

To activate this function, quickly rotate the

thumb control two times with the tiller arm
in the vertical parking brake position. “SLO”
will blink on the display when the function is
active. Move the directional speed control in
the desired direction of travel to travel
slowly. The parking brake will remain
applied until a travel request is made and
will re-apply after travel is no longer
requested.

The creep mode can be de-activated in the

following three ways:

1. Quickly rotate the thumb control two

times with the tiller arm in the vertical
parking brake position.
2. Activate the emergency reverse button.
3. No travel request for 10 seconds.
NOTE: Click-to-Creep mode cannot be
entered if an error code is active.

Electric Brake Override

Brake Release
Jumper

Figure 1. Electric Brake Override

The electric brake override provides a means

to electrically release the parking brake,
allowing the truck to be manually moved.
Some causes that require the use of the
electric brake override are a low battery or a
truck fault that prevents truck travel.

WARNING: Travel controls, plugging, and

emergency reverse are disabled when
the brake override jumper is activated.

46 00700-CL303
Controls
To use the brake override function, do the
following:

WARNING: The electric brake override

function should only be used to move a
disabled truck to allow service and repair.

WARNING: Do NOT activate the brake

override jumper with the lift truck on an
incline or ramp. With the tiller arm in the
travel position, and the parking brake
released, the truck may roll if sitting on
an upgrade or downgrade. Use caution
when enabling this feature. Keep the tiller
arm in the upright position until
movement is needed.
1. Remove any load from the forks.
2. Place the control handle in the fully
upright parking brake position.
3. With the Main ON/OFF Switch in the
ON position, remove the cover to access
the brake override jumper.
NOTE: Connecting the brake override
jumper allows the parking brake to
be electrically released when the
control handle is moved to the travel
position. Moving the handle to
either braking position applies the
brake. Disconnecting the brake
override jumper returns the brake to
its normal truck operating position.
For brake override jumper location,
see Figure 1 on page 46.

Toyota 8HBW23 47
Controls
NOTE: A battery voltage less than 12 volts
may not release the parking brake.
The parking brake should release
when the control handle is in the
travel position and should set when
the control handle is in the parking
brake position.
4. Move the control handle to the travel
position to release the parking brake.
For position of the control handle, see
“Service/Parking Brake” on page 41.
5. Manually move the lift truck to a service
area.
6. After the lift truck has been moved,
return the control handle to the fully
raised position.
7. Disconnect the brake override jumper,
returning the parking brake to normal
truck operation.
NOTE: Failure to disconnect the brake
override jumper prevents normal lift
truck operation. When this occurs, a
C16 error code is logged and “br_o”
appears on the operator display. If
the brake override jumper is inactive,
but the error code still appears,
check the Service Manual for other
causes of the error code.

Text Area
The text area displays battery state-of-
charge, hour meter data, fault codes, and
other information.

NOTE: Lift trucks equipped with a keypad

will show four dashes on the display
when the Main ON/OFF switch is
turned to ON.

Graphic Icons
Graphic icons tell you what kind of
information is displayed in the text area.

Toyota 8HBW23 49
Operator Display

Fault Indicator
The fault (attention) icon
flashes when the lift truck
has detected a fault
condition. The text area
flashes a fault code.

Fault codes may limit or disable one or more

functions until the problem is corrected. If a
fault code appears, first try to clear it by
returning all controls to neutral, applying
the parking brake, and turning the lift truck
OFF ( O ) and ON ( I ). If this does not clear
the code, or if the same code is repeated
after re-keying the truck, then call an
authorized service technician to correct the
problem. Do not operate this lift truck before
correcting the problem.

Hour Meter
This lift truck has three
different hour meter times. The
truck can be set up so that one
of these times displays for five
seconds when the lift truck is
first turned ON.

To read all the hour meter times on trucks

equipped with a keypad: with the truck
turned OFF ( O ), follow these steps:

1. Turn the Main ON/OFF switch to ON

( I ).
2. Press and hold the horn button.

50 00700-CL303

3. Enter your PIN key code and press the
green button ( I ).
4. When you see the letter H in the
operator display, release the horn
button. The green hour glass icon will
light up.
5. The operator display shows one of three
hour meter codes. Rotate the
directional/speed control until the hour
meter code you want appears on the
operator display.
6. When you release the directional/speed
control, the operator display shows the
hours for that meter.
To read the hour meter times on trucks that
do not have the keypad:

1. With the truck turned OFF ( O ), press

and hold the horn button.
2. Turn the Main ON/OFF switch to ON
( I ).
3. When you see the letter H in the
operator display, release the horn
button. The green hour glass icon will
light up.
4. The operator display shows one of three
hour meter codes. Rotate the
directional/speed control until the hour
meter code you want appears on the
operator display.
5. When you release the directional/speed
control, the operator display shows the
hours for that meter.

Toyota 8HBW23 51
Operator Display
The hour meter times and their codes are as
follows:

A = Key Time: number of hours the Main

ON/OFF switch and keypad are turned ON
( I ). These hours include key ON and an
operator logged in hours.

b = Activity Time: number of hours the truck

has traveled, lifted, or lowered.

c = Travel Time: number of hours the truck

has traveled (hours are counted any time
travel is requested).

To exit the hour meter function, turn the

Main ON/OFF switch OFF ( O ) or press the
red OFF ( O ) key on the keypad.

Battery Indicator
Battery Indication is the default
display during run time. When
this icon is lit, the text area
shows percent of battery charge
remaining. The icon starts to
flash when battery charge drops to 10%.
When battery charge shows 0%, you will not
be able to lift loads, but you will have
enough power left to drive to the battery
recharging station.

Even though a battery has been fully

recharged, it may not display 100% on the
Operator Display because of the battery's
type, age, and condition. The battery state of

52 00700-CL303

charge must fall below a preset value prior to
recharging in order for the display to reset to
100% after recharging.

Parameter Controls
A number of parameter controls
can be tailored to a customer’s
needs. Some of these
parameters require a special
Service Key to change. This
setting is for Service use only.

Selected OSHA Regulations

The use of forklift trucks in the workplace is

governed by various regulations. In the
United States, the Federal Occupational
Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
has issued regulations which cover the
majority of workplaces.

In addition, several states have implemented

regulations which apply instead of the
Federal regulations.

Check with your local OSHA office or

provincial Labor Bureau to confirm which
regulations govern your workplace.

Because of their wide applicability, this

section of your manual lists several parts of
the Federal OSHA regulations that might be
of particular importance to your workplace.

The full text of the Federal regulations can be

found in the Code of Federal Regulations at
29 CFR Section 1910.178.

The following citations are followed by a

reference to the appropriate subparagraph of
the regulations.

• Modifications and additions which affect capacity

and safe operation shall not be performed by the
customer or user without manufacturers prior
written approval. Capacity, operation and
maintenance instruction plates, tags or decals shall
be changed accordingly. (a) (3)
• The user shall see that all nameplates and
markings are in place and are maintained in a
legible condition. (a) (6)
