Purpose & Scope > This procedure is to provide guidelines for the proper storage, drying and exposure of welding material for controlling, maintaining the issuance of welding material. ° > Store personnel are responsible to adhere to this procedure. > The Welding Engineer/ Welding inspector/ QC Inspector is responsible to update and ensure implementation of this procedure. * > ASME Section IX, Edition 2023 > ASME Section II C, Edition 2023 > Manufacturer’s Recommendations 4. Procedure > 4,1 Storage, drying and exposure of SMAW electrodes to ASME Specification. > 4.1.1 Drying: > Prior to use all electrodes shall be dried at 260 C - 425 C for 1 TO 2 hours minimum. > The drying of electrodes may be deleted if the electrodes are supplied in the dried condition in a hermitically sealed container with a positive indication of seal integrity. > Damaged Hermetically packaged filler metals (such as low hydrogen electrodes) are to be rejected. > If the electrode manufacturer stipulates/Set-out a higher baking temperature than that stated above, the higher baking temperature should be used. 4.1.2 Storage: After drying, the electrodes shall be stored continuously in at 120°C. vv > 4.1.3 Exposure: > Upon removal from the drying or storage oven, the electrodes shall not be exposed to the atmosphere for more than 4 hours. > The exposure times may be extended to 8 hours if the electrodes are continuously stored in a portable electrode oven (quiver) heated to 65°C minimum. > 4.1.4 Re-Drying: > Electrodes exposed to the atmosphere for periods less than that permitted may be returned to a holding oven maintained at 120°C minimum, after a minimum holding period of four hours at 120°C minimum the electrodes may be Re-Dried only once after atmospheric exposure. > After any exposure in excess of the permitted time period, the electrodes must be re-dried at 260°C - 425°C minimum for one to two hours. > Electrodes that have become wet or moist shall not be used and shall be discarded, > All welding consumables received shall be checked and identified against the Mill Certificate and purchase order requirements. > 4.2 Stainless steel and Non-ferrous electrodes. > 4.2.1 Drying: > Prior to use all electrodes shall be dried at 120-250" C for 2 hours minimum. > The drying step may be deleted if the electrodes are supplied in the dried condition in a hermitically sealed metal can with a positive indication of seal integrity. Electrodes may be re-dried only once. > 4.2.2 Storage: > After drying, the electrodes shall be stored continuously in ovens at 120°C - 200°C minimum. > 4.2.3 Exposure: > Upon removal from the drying or storage oven, the electrodes shall not be exposed to the atmosphere for more than four hours. > The exposure times may be extended to 8 hours if the electrodes are continuously stored in a portable electrode oven (quiver) heated to 65°C minimum, > Electrodes exposed to the atmosphere for less than the permitted time period may be re-conditioned. > Electrodes exposed in excess of the permitted time period may be re-dried. > Electrodes that have become wet or moisture shall not be used and shall be discarded. > 4.2.4Re-con > Electrodes exposed to atmospheric for less than permitted time period may be returned to a holding oven maintained at 120°C minimum, after a minimum holding period of 4 hours at 120°C minimum the electrodes may be reissued. > 4.3 Submerged arc welding flux. > 4.3.1 Storage: > Active type Submerged Arc Welding fluxes shall not be used without approval. > The approval shall be obtained prior to the welding procedure qualification. > The fabricator shall clearly identify the proposed use of active fluxes in the welding procedure submissions. > SAW fluxes that the flux manufacturer recommends for single pass welding shall not be used for multiple pass welding, > All SAW Fluxes should be stored in sealed packaging in a dry environment (stores area). > When the flux package has been opened the flux shall be stored continuously in the oven at 120°C or as per the manufacturer's recommended temperature whichever is greater. > Flux used during welding shall not be reused. > 4.4 Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (6TAW) Filler Metal. > GTAW filler metal shall have either the AWS/ASME identification or the manufacturer's identification marked on each individual rod by the manufacturer with tags (“flags”), stencil, or stamping. # 5. Calibration Requirements > Calibration of electrode quivers shall be carried out on a Six-month basis, using a digital temperature recording device / calibrated laser thermometer. > Welding Inspector shall check the minimum temperature of the quiver which must show a temperature of 65°C. Calibration of baking and holding ovens shall be carried out once ina six month. > Using digital temperature recording device / calibrated laser thermometer. Note: Validation accuracy calibrated electrode quivers, baking ovens and holding ovens shall be within +10% of the true value.
