Media-based Art Design in the

Philippines: PRODUCT INNOVATION

& INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Prepared by : Glaiza Belle M. Mabanta

OBJECTIVES
• Obtain a thorough grasp of the historical, cultural, and technological
aspects of media-based art and design in the Philippines, including its
history, prominent artists, and significant trends.

• Demonstrate practical skills in product and industrial design

innovation through media-based art, including software tools,
conceptualization processes, prototyping, and collaboration in
multidisciplinary teams.

• Adopt a proactive and imaginative mindset, viewing difficulties as

opportunities for creative problem solving.

• Appreciating the potential of media-based art design to promote

tolerance, diversity, and cultural heritage may help to foster a sense of
cultural sensitivity and social responsibility.
PRODUCT INNOVATION
It’s the introduction of a new or significantly
improved good or service with respect to its
characteristics or intended uses. It includes
significant improvements in technical
specifications, components and materials,
incorporated software, user-friendliness, or other
functional characteristics. Product innovations
involve both new products and new inventions
STEPS IN THE DESIGN PROCESS
1. RESEARCH- Understanding consumer needs, preferences and pain
points through market research (survey /interview).
2. SKETCHING – Initial concept and ideas, allows for rapid exploration for
different designs,product features,forms and functionalities
3. COMPARATIVE PRODUCT RESEARCH – Analyzing product in the market
that similar to the proposed innovation .Helps to identify SWOT(Strenght,Weaknesses,
Opportunities and Threats).
4. MODEL MAKING – Creating physical or digital models of the product
concept to visualize its form, structure and dimensions.
5. PROTOTYPING – Creating functional prototypes or mock –ups of the
product concept to test its feasibility ,functionality and usability .
6. TESTING- Evaluating the performance usability and acceptance of the
prototype through user testing , feedback sessions, and technical assessment .
EXAMPLE OF PRODUCT INNOVATION
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
Is a process of design applied to products that are to
be manufactured through techniques of mass
production. Its key characteristic, is that the creative
act of determining and defining a product’s form and
features takes place in advance of the physical act of
making the product, which consists purely of
repeated, often automated, replication.
Product Characteristics of Industrial Design
1. Overall form of the object- Shape ,size , and proportions of the
objects

2. The location of details with respect to one another –Details such as

buttons , handles ,and controls should be placed throughfully in relation to
each other and to the overall form of the object .

3. Colors-Designers choose colors that resonate with the target audience

, reflect brand identity and enhance the product over all design.

4. Texture – Surface quality or feel of the product , Texture choices also

influence perceptions of quality and luxury.
Product Characteristics of Industrial Design
5. Form- Industrial designers manipulative form to optimize
functionality , ergonomics and visual aesthetics.

6. Aspects concerning the use of product-Factors such as ease of use,

accessibility ,safety and intuitive operation are essential considerations.

7. Choice of materials –The products performance , durability , aethetics

and sustainability .

8. Product Presentation- Create compeling product through compelling

product presentation through packaging design , visual merchandising ,
advertising and digital media to attract attention and communicate key
features and benefits.
