Mathematics
Quarter 3 – Module 9:
Differentiating Perimeter
From Area
Introductory Message

This Self-Leaning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear

learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for
you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-
by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in

each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this
module or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance
for better understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you
need to answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are
provided for each activity and test. We trust that you wil be honest in using
these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any
part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises
and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering
the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or
facilitator.

Thank you.

What I Need to Know

This module is written to further improve your critical thinking and

problem solving skills. You have already learned about the meaning of a
perimeter, and now you will explore about area and its difference from
perimeter.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

• differentiate area from perimeter (M4ME-IIIj-53)
• convert sq. cm to sq. m and vice versa (M4ME-IIIj-54)

What I Know

A.Directions: Fill in the blanks with the correct answers to make the
statements correct. Choose your answers from the box.

Perimeter Square units

Area Units

1. __________ refers to the space or region occupied by a closed figure.

2. The distance around a closed figure is called ____________.
3. We use __________ in expressing perimeter.
4. ___________ is used in measuring area.

The illustration below shows the concrete representation of area and
perimeter.

Distance around a closed Space or region occupied by a

figure. closed figure.

What’s New

There are two word problems given below. Try to analyze if which
one needs for you to solve for the distance and which one needs to know
the measurement to be used to cover a certain thing.

Directions: Read and answer the word problems below. Write your
answers in your activity notebook.

1. Jeremiah walked from his house to school, then to the park, and then
back home. How far did he walk?

School
100 m

105 m
Park

House 200m

4
2. My teacher decided to cover her table with plastic. Her table measures
45 cm long and 35 cm wide. How many meters of plastic did she buy?

Questions:
What did you do to solve each problem? Why?

What is It

Yes, Good job kids, in problem no. 1, you are going to solve for the
perimeter because the problem asked you for the distance walked by
Jeremiah. It means it is around a closed figure.

You did right kids! In problem number 2, you are going to solve for
the area. The problem asked for the number of meters the teacher needs
to buy.

Here’s how?

Problem #1
P = S 1 + S2 + S 3
P = 105 + 200 + 100
P = 405 m
m is the unit of measure used
Let P, the perimeter,
S1, first side
S2, second side
and S3, third side.

Problem #2
A=LxW
A = 45 x 35
A = 1,575 m2
m2 is the unit used because 𝑚 𝑥 𝑚 means 𝒎𝟏 𝒙 𝒎𝟏 (add the
exponent)

5
Based on the given examples,
Perimeter is the distance around a closed figure. It is the sum of the
length of the sides of a polygon. In perimeter, measurement express in
units.
e.g. cm

Area is the space or region occupied by a closed figure. To solve

for the area, use the formula A = L x W measurement express in square
units.
e.g. cm2

To further understand the lesson, study the following:

Perimeter Area
8 cm 8 cm

4 cm 4 cm 4 cm 4 cm

8 cm 8 cm
P = S + S + S + S or 4S A=LxW
P=8+8+4+4 A = 8 cm x 4 cm
P = 24 cm A = 32 cm2

Note: Note:
Just copy the given unit of cm is multiplied 2 times, so
measure. cm2

Lesson Converting Square
Centimeters to Square
2 Meters and Vice Versa

What’s In

Remember:
Meter (m) is the basic unit of length.

Conversion Table
1m 100 cm
(1m)2 (100 cm)2
1 m2 100 x 100 cm2
1 m2 10,000 cm2

• The table shows in 1m there are 100 cm so,

• (1m)2 means (100 cm)2 therefore
• 1 m2 equals 100 x 100 cm2 since m2 is equal to 100 x 100 finally
10,000 cm2 came out

11
What’s New

Directions: Read the problem and answer the questions that follow. Write
your answer in your Activity Notebook.

Dhin and Jerem are busy cleaning the playground of Longos II

Elementary School. If the area of the school is 640,000 sq. cm, what is its
equivalent in square meters?

- What is asked in the problem?

- What operation are you going to use?
- How will you solve the problem?

12
What is It

Let us see if we have the same answer.

How will you solve this problem?

Study this:

1. 10 000 sq cm = 1 sq m
640 000 sq cm = _____sq m

Solution:

Step 1:
1 𝑠𝑞.𝑚
640,000 sq. cm x 10,000 𝑠𝑞.𝑐𝑚
Divide 1 sq. m by its equivalent in square cm which is 10,000 sq. cm

Step 2:
1 𝑠𝑞.𝑚
640,000 sq. cm x 10,000 𝑠𝑞 𝑐𝑚

Step 3:
Divide out or cancel same unit of measure
1 𝑠𝑞.𝑚
640,000 sq. cm x 10,000 𝑠𝑞.𝑐𝑚

Step 4:
1 𝑠𝑞.𝑚
640,000 x 10,000

Step 5:
640,000
640,000 x 1 = 10,000

Step 6:
640,000
= 64 sq.m
10,000

13
Step 7:
64
= 64 sq. m
1

Take note in dividing numbers with zeroes, cancel the same number
of zeroes then divide the remaining digits, then copy the unit of measure
left.

2. Myca wanted to find out how many square centimeters there in 14 sq

m. Help her to solve for the answer.

Study this:
1 sq. m = 10,000 sq.cm
14 sq.m = _______ sq. cm

Solution:

Step 1:
10,000 𝑠𝑞.𝑐𝑚
14 sq. m = 14 sq. m x 1 𝑠𝑞.𝑚
Multiply 14 sq. m by 10,000 because 1 sq. m = 10,000 sq. m

Step 2:
10,000 𝑠𝑞.𝑐𝑚
14 sq. m x 1 𝑠𝑞.𝑚
Divide out or cancel the same unit of measure.

Step 3:
10,000 𝑠𝑞.𝑐𝑚
14 x 1
140,000 𝑠𝑞.𝑐𝑚
= 1
= 140,000 sq. cm

Based on the given examples, when you convert smaller unit to

bigger unit, you divide, when you convert bigger unit to smaller unit, you
multiply.
