Watching TV
Ken
We have the TV on at least once a day, because my
parents watch the news every evening. | used to
join them but, the last few years, | watch TV less
and less. If| have to decide between watching TV
or spending time with friends, it's easy to choose!
Still, TV can be good, because it stops you thinking
about your problems. For example, when | have a
stomach ache, | usually watch a bit to forget about
the pain.
Viad
My friends always tell me I should turn the TV off
sometimes. The thing is, | could easily live without a
TV ~ because I'm not really watching it! I have it on
when I'm doing my homework or something boring
like helping my parents tidy up. | think the noise
makes my brain work better, even if 'm not really
listening to what it's saying. Still, 'm going to try
and take their advice.
Brandon
When I was younger, | only watched TV when I was
sick. As | got older, even that stopped. My parents
don't like TV. Actually, we don’t even have one in
the house anymore! My classmates and I watch
TVon our phones, though. | watch a lot less than
them, but | usually join them for an hour or so
after school. | don't think it's bad for us. You can
actually learn a lot from TV — you just have to think
carefully about what you watch.

Finding a piece of history
I've heard stories about people who found the most amazing things when they weren't
even looking. Well, last Sunday was the first sunny day in a while, so I decided not to
stay home to finish my history project but to go walking along the river with my brother
instead.
We were just crossing over the beautiful old bridge in the centre of our village when we
saw something at the side of the river. It's probably just rubbish that someone left there,”
said my brother. However, | wasn't so sure, so we went down to the river to check.
It was a piece of a plate. It was dirty, but we could see that it was painted and it looked
very old. In fact, it looked a lot like a plate | saw in a museum once. We could also see
some writing on it — ‘ROMA’. We got really excited when we read this. ‘The Romans! |
shouted. ‘They lived here nearly 2,000 years ago. Well be on the news for finding this!”
We carefully picked it up and took it home with us.
‘On Monday morning, we took it to school to show our history teacher, Mr Bennett. He
looked at it for afew moments and then laughed. ‘'m sorry to tell you this, boys, but I'm
pretty sure it comes from The Roma, the Italian restaurant that opened in town last year,”
he said. We both felt so stupid!
