MIDDLE EAST TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT ME 493 INTRODUCTION TO SMART STRUCTURES AND MATERIALS SPRING 2011

HOMEWORK 3
Date Assigned: November 14, 2011 , Monday Due Date: November 21, 2011, Monday (in Class) Instructions You should submitt your homeworks at the start of the first lecture on due date. Your homework should be written neatly. The discussions should be clear and concise. Homeworks for this course are individual assignments. Although you might have discussions with your friends and the instructor, you are expected to prepare your solution for these problems on your own.

PROBLEM 1 Solve Problem 5 given in the PROBLEMS section of Chapter 2 of your textbook. See attached pages for the problem statements.

PROBLEM 2 The PZT specimen shown in figure 2 is used as a force transducer to measure in the 3direction. (a) What will be the voltage produced in response to a uniformly distributed 100N load? (b) What load will result in an output of 10V? What will be the corresponding strains in the crystal?

PROBLEM 3 The simply supported beam shown in the following figure has a length of L=300mm, a thickness of ts=3mm, and a width of bs=15mm. At the middle of the beam, a PZT bending actuator is rigidly bonded to the top and bottom beam surfaces in a symmetrical configuration. Thicknesses of the top and bottom PZT elements are ta=0.6mm each. Length of the PZT bending actuator is Lactuator=L/3=100mm. Material properties of the PZT elements are as follows: = 100 33 = 600 10 12 / 31 = 275 10 12 / = 70

Material properties of the beam is as follows:

Both PZT elements are poled along 3 axis in such a direction that a positive V1 causes the top PZT element to contract in 1 direction while positive V1 causes the bottom PZT to expand in 1 direction. For V1=600Volts, find the transverse displacement of the midpoint of the beam (wmidpoint = ?). For the same driving voltage V1, sketch the deformed shape of the beam. o Your sketch should correctly reflect the curvature and transverse displacement distribution along the beam in regions where the PZTs are bonded and NO PZT elements are bonded. o Make sure to comment on the beam curvature and transverse displacement distributions in regions of the beam where PZT elements are NOT bonded. o

Hint: Boundary conditions for a simply supported beam is as follows (Beer and Johnston):
