Lesson Title: Terra Sigillata Focus/Objective: Students will 1.

Design and build a box using slabs, size: Min: 6X6, Max: 24X24 2. Learn the history of Terra Sigillata used by the Greeks and Romans. 3. Be introduced to the work of Anne Flche. Time: 5 60-minute class periods Materials & Preparation: Clay Kiln Water Sponge Clay tools In class demonstration Prepare terra sigillata according to Anna Floches recipe.

Introduction: Students will learn to construct a ceramic box and a lid using slabs. The ancient

roman and Greek decorating technique, terra sigillata, will be used for the boxes. However, students will be using terra sigillata in a method used by Anna Floche. There is a minimum and maximum size requirement, but no shape requirement.

Instruction: Day 1 1. PowerPoint and video will be shown to give an introduction into slab building, slipping, scoring, and terra Sigillata. 2. Students will receive handouts and well discuss the history of terra sigillata, and how potters use it today. 3. Designing three to five functional boxes with lids. Designs are to be drawn in sketchbooks. Will be assigned as homework. Have ready and prepare to start following day. Day 2 1. Today is the first day of production. I will roll out slabs for students. 2. Students will start to construct their box. Slipping, scoring, and attaching in appropriate places. 3. Allow 5-10 minutes for clean up. Store clay properly. Day 3 1. Construction on boxes will continue. 2. Students may apply texture to their box if desired. 3. Allow 5-10 minutes for clean up. Store clay properly. Day 4 1. Construction on boxes will continue. 2. Allow 5-10 minutes for clean up. Store clay properly. Day 5 1. After the clay has become bone dry, students will apply the terra sigillata with a brush to their piece. 2. When finished and ready to enter the kiln, the pieces will fire at 2010F.
