Police Sub-Inspector Ahmed Shiyam confirmed that the incident occurred before da wn today, and the perpetrators escaped before police arrived at the scene. It is believed that the group threw objects lit with petrol and burnt one side o f the monument, Shiyam explained, adding that no arrests have been made yet and police are investigating the act of arson. According to an eyewitness in the Hithadhoo Power Park restaurant last night, wh ich is located next to the monument, a group of people first attempted to torch the monument using petrol around 11pm. However, their attempts were unsuccessful and the fires were quickly put out by Hithadhoo residents at the area. The protesters contended that the monument featured idols and objects of worship a nd demanded it be taken down. A large crowd of Hithadhoo residents gathered for the official unveiling by Paki stani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, after which they took photographs in fr ont of the monument. A member of the Pakistani delegation at the unveiling ceremony explained to Mini van News that the monument represented artifacts of the ancient Indus Valley civ ilisation and were not specifically religious symbols. Following the first attempt to vandalise the monument, a second member of the Pa kistani delegation told Minivan News that they approached the Foreign Ministry o ver the incident but was informed by an official that it had not occurred, and w as a rumour spread by the opposition. Foreign Minister Ahmed Naseem said yesterday that the delegation had not express ed concern to the Foreign Ministry, and noted that besides prosecuting those res ponsible for the damage, there was little we can do. The attacks on the monument, said Naseem, had been instigated by people with stra nge ideas. He observed that there were statues of Buddhas in the National Museum in Male. Some people are not happy, but Im not too excited about it, he said. Illegal Hithadhoo Councillor Hussein Hilmy explained that the monument was designed and b uilt by Pakistan, and that the City Council had helped erect the monument. Islamic Minister Dr Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari was not responding at time of press and officials at the ministry did not respond to inquiries today. Bari however t old local media last week that the monument was illegal as it represented objects o f worship of other religions. Bari said he had discussed the matter with the Pakistani High Commission and req uested it be taken down at the end of the summit. Meanwhile, Adhaalath Party President Sheikh Imran Abdulla told Minivan News toda y that the monument should not be kept on Maldivian soil for a single day and shoul d be removed immediately. We believe it conflicts with the constitution of the Maldives, the Religious Unit y Act of 1994 and the regulations under the Act, he said. The monument was illegal because it depicted objects of worship that denied the onene ss of God, he explained. Imran contended that the engravings on the monument represented objects of worsh ip for a lot of other religions. The religious conservative party has asked the Prosecutor Generals Office today t o take legal action, he revealed. Replying to comments made by Shoura Council members, the departments spokesman Fa hd Al-Bakran said the ministry would not ask women to show their faces during ju dicial procedures but would take their fingerprints, which has been found to be a better alternative. We have requested approval for a number of jobs for women in order to implement t he Cabinet decision for opening women sections at all government departments, AlBakran said. He said the ministry would open women sections soon after receiving approval fro m the government, adding that women would be appointed in counseling and guidanc e sections. Like men, women can also use lawyers to defend their cases as they are considered a legal tool all over the world, Al-Bakran said. He said the issue of increasing the number of judges did not fall under the mini strys jurisdiction. 70 killed in Syria violence: activists 15 November 2011, NICOSIA More than 70 people were killed in violence across Syria on Monday, one of the bloodiest days since an anti-regime uprising began eight months ago, acco rding to a new toll by activists on Tuesday. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 27 civilians were sho t dead by security forces while 34 soldiers and 12 suspected army deserters were killed in clashes. Most of the victims were killed in the southern flashpoint province of Daraa, th e Observatory said in a statement received in Nicosia. Twenty-three people were shot dead by security forces posted along the road betwe en the towns of Kherbet Ghazale and Hirak, the statement said.
