Police Sub-Inspector Ahmed Shiyam confirmed that the incident occurred before da wn today, and the perpetrators escaped before police arrived at the scene. It is believed that the group threw objects lit with petrol and burnt one side o f the monument, Shiyam explained, adding that no arrests have been made yet and police are investigating the act of arson. According to an eyewitness in the Hithadhoo Power Park restaurant last night, wh ich is located next to the monument, a group of people first attempted to torch the monument using petrol around 11pm. However, their attempts were unsuccessful and the fires were quickly put out by Hithadhoo residents at the area. Photo from Dhiislam website Meanwhile, two young men who toppled the monument during an earlier protest led by members of opposition parties last Wednesday remain in custody, facing charge s of damage to private property. The protesters contended that the monument featured idols and objects of worship a nd demanded it be taken down. The monument, which features engraved symbols of ancient civilisation of Pakista n and a bust of the countrys founder Mohamed Ali Jinah, had been removed by the A ddu City Council last Tuesday night but was replace back on its plinth with a co

ver ahead of Thursdays unveiling ceremony. Monuments representing the eight SAARC nations were erected across Addu City and unveiled by heads of state and government during the summit. A large crowd of Hithadhoo residents gathered for the official unveiling by Paki stani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, after which they took photographs in fr ont of the monument. A member of the Pakistani delegation at the unveiling ceremony explained to Mini van News that the monument represented artifacts of the ancient Indus Valley civ ilisation and were not specifically religious symbols. Following the first attempt to vandalise the monument, a second member of the Pa kistani delegation told Minivan News that they approached the Foreign Ministry o ver the incident but was informed by an official that it had not occurred, and w as a rumour spread by the opposition. Foreign Minister Ahmed Naseem said yesterday that the delegation had not express ed concern to the Foreign Ministry, and noted that besides prosecuting those res ponsible for the damage, there was little we can do. The attacks on the monument, said Naseem, had been instigated by people with stra nge ideas. He observed that there were statues of Buddhas in the National Museum in Male. Some people are not happy, but Im not too excited about it, he said. Illegal Hithadhoo Councillor Hussein Hilmy explained that the monument was designed and b uilt by Pakistan, and that the City Council had helped erect the monument. Islamic Minister Dr Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari was not responding at time of press and officials at the ministry did not respond to inquiries today. Bari however t old local media last week that the monument was illegal as it represented objects o f worship of other religions. Bari said he had discussed the matter with the Pakistani High Commission and req uested it be taken down at the end of the summit. Meanwhile, Adhaalath Party President Sheikh Imran Abdulla told Minivan News toda y that the monument should not be kept on Maldivian soil for a single day and shoul d be removed immediately. We believe it conflicts with the constitution of the Maldives, the Religious Unit y Act of 1994 and the regulations under the Act, he said. The monument was illegal because it depicted objects of worship that denied the onene ss of God, he explained. Imran contended that the engravings on the monument represented objects of worsh ip for a lot of other religions. The religious conservative party has asked the Prosecutor Generals Office today t o take legal action, he revealed. In a statement condemning the idolatrous monument, the Adhaalath Partys Hithadhoo b ranch claimed that no Maldivian of sound mind would allow idols or iconography of other religions to be erected in the country. The Pakistani monument was part of efforts by adversaries of Islam to turn the fa

ith that Maldivians embraced 900 years ago upside down, the statement reads. The party noted that under section six of the religious unity regulations, publi c displays of symbols or slogans belonging to a religion other than Islam were ill egal, and called on those responsible for erecting the monuments to be brought be fore the law protecting religious unity. http://minivannews.com/society/pakistans-idolatrous-saarc-monument-set-ablaze-by -protesters-28172 ------Women get better treatment in courts: Jeddah By MUHAMMAD AL-SULAMI Nov 15, 2011 JEDDAH: The Justice Ministry on Monday reiterated its efforts to protect the rig hts of women, saying they receive support and care from judicial authorities in the Kingdom such as courts and notaries public. Replying to comments made by Shoura Council members, the departments spokesman Fa hd Al-Bakran said the ministry would not ask women to show their faces during ju dicial procedures but would take their fingerprints, which has been found to be a better alternative. India will be at your side: Indian PM addresses Maldives parliament By Ahmed Naish November 13th, 2011 Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh pledged support at parliament yesterday for the Maldives democratic transition through financial assistance and bilateral initiatives for development, becoming the first foreign head of state or govern ment to address the legislative body in its 78-year history. The Indian Prime Minister was greeted with a ceremonial welcome in Male for his f irst official state visit after the conclusion of the 17th SAARC summit in Addu City on Friday. India will be at your side in your transition to a fully functioning democracy, Si ngh declared at the special sitting of the Peoples Majlis. We will assist the Majl is by way of training, formulation of rules and regulations and any other assist ance that you may desire. The Speaker of the Lob Shaba, the lower house of the Indian parliament, is due t o visit the Maldives, Singh noted, while the formation of India-Maldives parliam entary friendship groups augur well for the development of relations between our two parliaments. Prior to his historic address before parliament, the Indian Prime Minister signe d five agreements under a Framework for Cooperation in Development with President Mohamed Nasheed after official bilateral talks at the Presidents Office. This is a blueprint for cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, food s ecurity, fisheries development, tourism, transportation, information technology, new and renewable energy, communications and enhancing connectivity by air and sea, Singh said in his address. In addition to a US$40 million line of credit to construct housing units, India extended a credit facility of US$100 million to help the Maldives meet its shortterm budgetary needs and import essential commodities. India extended similar financial assistance in December 2008 to plug the fiscal deficit and in the following year subscribed to US$100 million in treasury bonds . The new loan is to be used to settle Rf4.76 billion in T-bill sales sold throu gh the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) by April 30, 2012. US$30 million of the credit facility was issued on October 31 by the Indian gove rnment. As part of the aid programme, said Singh, India will undertake a major renovation to be completed by 2013 of the India Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male, the main referral hospital in the Maldives. The Prime Minister noted that Indian companies were engaged in infrastructure pr ojects in the Maldives and wished to forge closer economic links through banking and financial institutions and cooperate in the modernisation of your fishing and food processing industry. Among the agreements signed yesterday was the inception of a regular passenger c um cargo ferry service between Cochin and Male and the development of a regional port in Kulhudhufushi, the main population hub of the north. Interlinked security interests

On global warming and climate change, Singh said India understood the threat Mal dives faced from rising sea levels and shared its concerns. I wish to state in no uncertain terms that India will stand as one with Maldives in combating global warming. Maldives views must be heard with respect in global councils, he said. We will help Maldives to achieve its aim of becoming carbon neutral. We will help build your capacities through sharing of energy efficiency technologies and pro vide scholarships for students from Maldives in areas such as coastal zone adapt ation and management. On the extended neighbourhood of the Indian Ocean and shared security concerns, Si ngh noted that over 97 percent of Indias international trade by volume and 75 perc ent by value passes through the Indian Ocean. The challenges we face are well known extremism and religious fundamentalism, pir acy, smuggling and drug trafficking to name a few. Maldives is additionally conc erned about poaching in the coral reefs and illegal commercial fishing by foreig n trawlers. We have together experienced the devastation caused by the tsunami i n 2004, Singh observed. As part of a multi-pronged approach to dealing with the problems, India has pledge d to support the construction of a police academy in the Maldives while agreemen ts were signed for cooperation in combating terrorism, drug trafficking, disaste r management, coastal security, and transfer of sentenced prisoners. The Indian Prime Minister also congratulated President Nasheed and his administr ation for the outstanding manner in which the [SAARC] Summit was organised, a conf erence that has helped further consolidate the process of regional integration in South Asia. Singh praised the impressive strides in nation-building the Maldives has made sinc e independence in 1965, with the highest socio-economic indicators and progress on Millennium Development Goals in the South Asia region. You have chosen the path of democracy, freedom and respect for human rights. You have shown how even a small nation can stand up and be counted in the affairs of the world, he said. I am confident that the people of Maldives will continue to consolidate their ach ievements. As an abiding friend, India will always stand by you in these efforts . Our relations are time-tested and I wish to reaffirm that they shall remain so in the future. http://minivannews.com/politics/india-will-be-at-your-side-dr-manmohan-singh-add resses-parliament-28143 ------Syria s Assad urged to go as isolation deepens Nov 15, 2011, Jordan s King Abdullah II urged President Bashar al-Assad to step down as the Sy rian regime stood defiant in the face of growing international pressure and acti vists said dozens more were killed. Damascus stood increasingly isolated as the European Union and United States sho

wered praise on the Arab League for its weekend decision to suspend Syria s memb ership over its lethal crackdown on protests. And in the first call by an Arab leader for Assad to quit, King Abdullah said in remarks aired on the BBC: "I believe, if I were in his shoes, I would step down ." "I would step down and make sure whoever comes behind me has the ability to chan ge the status quo that we re seeing." But Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem told a packed news conference Damascus would not budge despite the "dangerous" and "shameful" Arab League move. "The decision of the Arab League to suspend Syria represents a dangerous step," Muallem said. "Today there is a crisis in Syria which pays the price of its strong positions. Syria will not budge and will emerge stronger... and plots against Syria will fa il." On the ground, Syrian security forces shot dead at least 16 civilians in the fla shpoint southern province of Daraa while 19 regime forces were killed in clashes with suspected army deserters, a rights group said. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the civilians were ki lled by gunfire from checkpoints manned by security forces in Daraa, the cradle of eight months of anti-regime protests. Security forces also killed two people in the central city of Homs, it said. The EU said it "salutes and fully supports" the Arab League s suspension of Syri a for failing to implement a plan to end a violent clampdown on pro-democracy pr otests that has killed 3,500 since mid-March, according to the United Nations. It "shows the increasing isolation of the Syrian regime," the EU said, adding th e bloc "stands ready to engage with representative members of the opposition... such as the Syrian National Council." EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said she had been in touch with Arab Le ague chief Nabil al-Arabi on how to protect civilians. "We will keep in touch an d see what can be done." US State Department spokesman Mark Toner said the United States would "continue to consult not only with the Arab League, but also with the EU and our other par tners as we move forward in trying to find ways to increase the pressure on Assa d." Dismissing US military intervention for now, Toner said the focus was on "trying to increase the economic noose, if you will, around the Assad regime, to choke them off financially so that they feel the effects of this in growing isolation and that they cease the violence". He added: "We never take any options off the table, certainly, but, you know, we re going to try to find ways to increase the political and economic isolation o n Syria." In new sanctions, EU ministers agreed to stop Syria accessing funds from the Eur opean Investment Bank (EIB). They also blacklisted a further 18 Syrians, mostly members of the military, brin

ging to 74 the members of Assad s inner circle hit in past months by an EU asset s freeze and travel ban. In Damascus, Muallem slammed international interference, blaming Washington for "encouraging acts of violence" and said there was a spike in operations by "arme d groups" in Syria. He blamed this violence for delays in withdrawing troops from the streets, as th e Arab League had demanded. EU foreign ministers said in a statement the continuing bloodshed called for int ernational action, and "urges all members of the Security Council to assume thei r responsibilities". Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said the UN should explore sending observers or a UN humanitarian mission. The Arab League announced plans to send a 500-strong delegation to Syria, includ ing human rights activists, media and military experts, to assess the situation and study measures to protect civilians. Arab foreign ministers are due to set a date for the mission on Wednesday, on th e sidelines of a meeting in Rabat, according to an official of the Cairo-based A rab League. The ministers had met on November 2, when they drew up a plan under which Syria would pull troops back from protest hubs and free arrested demonstrators. That meeting gave Syria 15 days to comply. On Saturday, the Arab bloc decided that Damascus had failed to keep its side of the bargain and 18 of its 22 members voted in favour of Syria s suspension, whic h will come into effect on Wednesday. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/middle-east/Syrias-Assad-urged-to-go-as -isolation-deepens/articleshow/10737339.cms?prtpage=1 ------Breivik admits killing 77, but denies guilt Nov 15, 2011, OSLO: Norwegian anti-immigration militant Anders Behring Breivik spoke in open c ourt for the first time on Monday and admitted killing 77 people at a July youth camp, but he denied any guilt, saying he was a military commander in a far-righ t resistance movement. By RAMI AL-SHAHEIBI Nov 15, 2011

TRIPOLI: Hundreds of uniformed men described as members of a new Libyan army hav e been deployed for the first time to settle a bloody feud between rival militia s, officials say. The soldiers, wearing beige camouflage uniforms and ID badges, were sent to serv e as a buffer between gunmen from the city of Zawiya and the nearby tribal area of Warshefana. Four days of fighting, the most sustained since the capture and killing of Muamm ar Qaddafi last month, had claimed at least 13 lives. The violence raised questi ons about the ability of Libyas interim leaders to restore order after eight mont hs of civil war. I have said repeatedly and I will say it today, we are not taking any options off the table, because its my firm belief that an Iran with a nuclear weapon would p ose a security threat not only to the region but also to the United States, Obama told a news conference in Honolulu at the conclusion of APEC summit. As he put it, the USs strong preference is to have Iran meet its international obl igations, negotiate diplomatically, to allow them to have peaceful use of nuclea r energy in accordance with international law, but at the same time, forswear th e weaponization of nuclear power. Obama, who took up the Iran issue with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Chi nese President Hu Jintao during bilateral meetings on Saturday, said all three o f them were united on the need to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, t hereby triggering a nuclear arms race in the region. One of the sources said that the two countries had yet to agree with Afghanistan on a transit price for the gas. Turkmenistan, which sits on the worlds fourth-largest natural gas reserves, wants to build the trans-Afghan pipeline as part of its plans to diversify sales from Soviet-era master Russia to energy-hungry markets in Asia and Europe. It aims to supply natural gas from its South Iolotan field, the worlds second-lar gest, to Pakistan and India. The idea of the pipeline, known as Tapi, was first raised in the mid-1990s, but construction has yet to begin. The proposed 1,700 kilometres pipeline could carry one trillion cubic metres of Turkmen gas over a 30-year period, Turkmen Oil and Gas Minister Bayramgeldy Nedi rov said this month, which would work out at 33 billion cubic metres a year. But the route, particularly the 735 kilometres Afghan leg, presents significant security challenges and will require Pakistan and India to agree on volumes and price. Participants must also secure funding for the project. The Centre is instead veering towards the idea of pulling out the army from seve ral towns of the state without revoking the AFSPA, so that the troops can be red eployed, if need be. Top sources in the government said it could adopt the middle path to mollify bot h the army and the Omar government over the issue.

More consultations will be carried out on AFSPA withdrawal in the meantime and a t the end of the 2012 summer, a re- assessment of the ground situation would be done, a source suggested. The armys case is that once the AFSPA is withdrawn from an area, it would be poli tically difficult to re- impose the Act if trouble on the terror front arose agai n. There will be a massive public outburst against any such move and the state g overnment would not be able to handle it.
