Examination of the legal framework for autonomous weapons in International humanitarian

law: Ensuring compliance, Accountability and ethical use.

The development of science and technology has brought about Autonomous weapons which have both
positive and negative impact in armed conflict and IHL. The positive one may including use of fewer
casualties, removing the risk to the combatants, lowering costs of the military operations as well as
speed and agility. Following such orons of Autonomous weapons, many States are engaging in
creations of such weapons, for instance USA and Russia.

However, such autonomous weapons on the other hand, brought number of critics and debate under
IHL which led to insufficiencies and ineffectiveness of IHL. Such problems and insufficiencies under
IHL as far as autonomous weapons are concerns includes; Firstly, there is no specific law for regulating
autonomous weapons which means no any international law or agreement for regulating on how to use
and limit such weapons. Secondly, they raised legal challenge as who will explain or being prosecuted
as why such weapons struck civilians or protected persnos or protected objects as they are operate on
their own without human intervention.

Furthermore, the weapons are not able to hold fire to surrendered persons or take prisoners of wars, and
if can, then they can not take care of them and adhere principles of humanity as they are just design for
killing purposes or they are just a killing machines.

Moreover, there are difficulties in anticipating and limit their effect as they operate on their own and
since they are just machines and computer system, hence, they also subjected with number of errors
which would result to violations of international humanitarian law.

Therefore, due to such problems and challenges, there is highly needy for conducting a research so as
to critically analyse all such challenges and problems and find out their best possible way to overcome
and solve them and ensure the core principles of International humanitarian law are adhred and
preserved.
