Introduction
The SonicWALL WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance reduces application latency and conserves bandwidth, significantly enhancing WAN application performance. This Getting Started Guide details the deployment of the SonicWALL WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance.
Requirements
The SonicWALL WXA 5000 requires: A SonicWALL E-class NSA, NSA, or TZ security appliance with the latest 5.8.1.0-30o firmware. An unused interface on the SonicWALL NSA or TZ security appliance. A VMware ESX or ESXi Server running 4.0 or higher with: o 2 virtual CPUs o 80 GB hard disk o 4GB RAM
A layer 2 network between the ESX Server and the SonicWALL NSA/TZ. Note: This is required for communication between SonicWALL WXA 5000 on your ESX Server and SonicWALL appliance. Customers with current service/software support contracts can obtain updated versions of SonicWALL firmware from the MySonicWALL customer portal at https://www.mysonicwall.com. Updated firmware is also available for free within 90 days of registering the SonicWALL device on MySonicWALL.

Registering your SonicWALL WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance
You must register your SonicWALL WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance before first use. Registration is performed using the NSA/TZ appliance management interface. It is recommended that you also associate your WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance as a child to the managing NSA/TZ appliance. When registration is completed, the SonicWALL WXA appliance will be licensed and ready to use. 3. Complete the registration form, click Register. 4. Verify the information you entered is correct, click Submit. 5. In the confirmation screen, click continue.

Registering the WXA 5000 Serial Number
To register your SonicWALL WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance, perform the following steps: 1. Log in to your http://www.mysonicwall.com account.
3. Enter you Serial Number, Friendly Name, Product Group, and Authentication Code. 4. Click the Submit button. You have successfully registered your SonicWALL WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance.

Associating the WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance
Note: It is highly recommended that you associate the WXA 500 LiveCD with the managing NSA/TZ appliance. To associate the SonicWALL WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance as a child to your NSA/TZ appliance, perform the following steps: 1. Log in to your http://www.mysonicwall.com account.
3. Click on the NSA/TZ appliance you are using to manage the SonicWALL WXA appliance. The Service Management page displays.

4. Under the Associated Products section, click WAN Acceleration.
5. In the Serial Number drop-down list, select the serial number for the WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance. 6. Click the Associate button. Your SonicWALL WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance is now associated with the managing NSA/TZ appliance.

Activating the WXA 5000 License
To activate your SonicWALL WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance license, perform the following steps: 1. Log in to your SonicWALL NSA/TZ appliance. 2. Navigate to the System > License page. 3. Click the click here link to activate, upgrade, or renew services.
The License Management page displays. 4. Enter your MySonicWALL.com account Email Address or Username and Password in the appropriate fields, click Submit.

The MySonicWALL.com home page displays. 5. Enter the Activation Key or Serial Number in the textbox, click Next.
6. If you have multiple NSA/TZ appliances registered, select the one you are using with your WXA appliance.
The Activate Service page displays. 7. Enter the Activation Key(s), click Submit.

The confirmation page displays.
You have successfully licensed your SonicWALL WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance. 8. Before accessing the WAN Acceleration page, navigate to the System > Licenses page and click the Synchronize button. This synchronizes the licenses between the License Manager and NSA/TZ appliance.

Choosing a Network Deployment Mode
Choose a network deployment mode for communication between the SonicWALL WXA 5000 on your ESX Server and the SonicWALL NSA or TZ security appliance. The following is a list of the possible modes: Direct Access Mode VLAN Trunks Mode NSA/TZ Trunking Mode Please refer to http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r41/vsp_41_esx_server_config.pdf for more information on how to configure your virtual network on your ESX Server.

VLAN Trunks Mode
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Assign a VLAN ID to a virtual switch on the ESX Server. Give it a network label for the virtual switch. Map this network label to the sample network on the SonicWALL WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance. Allocate an unused interface on SonicWALL NSA/TZ. Connect an ethernet cable between the unused interface on SonicWALL NSA/TZ and to a port on the physical switch connected to your ESX Server. 6. Configure access mode for the VLAN ID on the port of the physical switch where the SonicWALL NSA/TZ is connected.

NSA/TZ Trunking Mode
Assign a VLAN ID to a virtual switch on the ESX Server. Give it a network label for the virtual switch. Map this network label to the sample network on the SonicWALL WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance. Installing the WXA 5000 using VMware vSphere
This section details the installation of the SonicWALL WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance using the VMware vSphere. Perform the following steps to complete the WXA 5000 installation: 1. Download the SonicWALL WXA 5000 Open Virtual Appliance (OVA). 2. Login to your vSphere client. 3. Click File, then select Deploy OVF Template.
4. The Deploy OVF Template pop-up window displays. Specify the location of WXA 5000 OVA file by clicking the Browse button. Select the SonicWALL WXA 5000 OVA file. Then, click the Next button.

5. The SonicWALL WXA 5000 OVF template details display. Verify the product name is wxa5000-1.0.10, then click Next.
6. The Name and Location options display. Specify a Name and Location for deploying the SonicWALL WXA 5000, then click Next.

The Deployment Completed Successfully window displays when the WXA 5000 deployment is complete:

The SonicWALL WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance is now operational. Navigate to the WAN Acceleration tab on your SonicWALL NSA/TZ to further configure the WAN Acceleration service.
