Chief Executives Reflections

Summer started with cracking weather at Easter and has ended the same way. Where does the time go? Suffolk Family Carers is continuing to address the challenging situation of meeting the needs of more Family Carers with fewer resources, so we have had to make some changes to the way we work. However our commitment to Family Carers is unchanged and we will continue to do the very best we can in the current climate of challenge and change. I am pleased to announce our new partnership with Activities Unlimited at the Cafe. This is a vibrant resource for everyone so please do come and have a coffee and support this venture, if you are able to. See page (8) for further details. Our fundraising is growing with your help and I hope to see some of you at our two large events one, our second major concert at the Regent Theatre in Ipswich called Care for a Song, on 20th November (see page 5) and the other, our Festive Evening, in partnership with Bourne Garden Centre and Suffolk Food Hall on Friday 9th December (promoted on the back page) Listening to you, learning from you and getting your message across to a variety of our partner organisation is essential so please do continue to let me know how things are. I would like to thank all of you who replied to our survey last winter; this has really helped shape how we will work in the future. The role that Family Carers of all ages

information or feel free to call us to find out how you can become more involved. Finally we wanted to share a good news story and some recent publicity. A family the project supported through a very difficult time last summer, when their adult son moved from a residential home in Essex to his own shared ownership home in Lowestoft, has given an interview to the BBC. There is an article about this on the BBC website talking about how the family feels, just over a year on about the move. Well worth a read for any families who may be going through the same thing. If you search Suffolk Mortgages and Disabilities the article will come up. We also have a short film of some of the Family Carers we supported talking about their move and life before and after, if any Family Carers want to see it. We hope to be putting this on our website shortly.

The Learning Disability Team; Changing Times

As many of you will know there have been lots of changes at Suffolk Carers over the last few months and the Learning Disability project has been no exception. We sadly had to say goodbye to many Family Carers first point of contact, Pat Nice, who we know many Family Carers had an enormous support from, in filling in Emergency Plans and generally being pointed in the right direction with services we offer at Suffolk Family Carers and more widely in the community. Bill and Emma have swapped roles with Bill now taking on the role of advocate. Primarily this is funded for families of people with a learning disability who are part of the local authorities AMOS project (Accelerated Moving On Strategy). This is where people who live in residential care homes in or out of the county are being supported to move into their own homes and in some cases, purchase a share of those homes through a special mortgage; or where residential care homes are de-registering to become supported living schemes and people are then entitled to a tenancy agreement and more welfare benefits. As you can imagine this can be quite a daunting time for those families. In some circumstances we are also able to support families of people who need to move on, to find suitable accommodation for them and receive an appropriate service from ACS. Emma is now the involvement worker and has the task of supporting the Family Carer representatives to the Suffolk Learning Disability Partnership Board (SLDPB) to ensure families views are considered when planning the future development of services. This is always a challenging task but Bill and the reps have worked hard to try and ensure they are meaningfully involved in meetings. This continues to present hurdles especially when the SLDPBs format and meeting structure is once again under review and may change, although we are unsure what those changes will be yet. We hope that we can involve more families and provide some added bonuses for families who do give us their time and thoughts on services and their future development. Watch this space for more

Debenham Tackles Dementia. - A Community "Caring for the Carers"

Sometimes something comes along about which people ask why hasnt this happened before? There is no answer other than - it just has! Its the right project, at the right time, and the right place. The Debenham Project is exactly that. Dementia is an illness that affects so many of our husbands, wives, parents, grandparents, friends and neighbours that we cannot stand aside and hope that the nation will look after them. In April 2009 a public meeting took place which proved pivotal. It led to this unique project in which our community is taking responsibility for the welfare and support of those who are Family Carers looking after someone with dementia, and of meeting the health and social needs of those they care for. It has developed a comprehensive range of local volunteer-based services which draw in the best professional support. The Debenham Project has become recognised as an example of innovation and best practice across Suffolk and beyond. It won Suffolk Acres Probert Cup for community achievement in 2011. The project works with the NHS, the local authorities, The Alzheimer's Society, Age UK, Suffolk Family Carers, local organisations and many other agencies to help and support carers providing: Confidential Telephone Line Activities and Social Session Carers' Club Medication Management Support Help in getting Respite Care Special Food 'n' Friends lunch clubs Advice and Information Info Cafe Special Events Exercise Therapy

Our aim is to "make it local" and "make it social" - it makes a huge difference. The latest service is a local bi-monthly NHS clinic - a much more friendly, familiar and comfortable experience than the "hospital waiting room". The project will continue to evolve - "What can be done to help, will be done to help" - Lynden Jackson (Chairman) For further information go to www.the-debenham-project.org.uk

Woolpit Steam Rally Committee donated another 650 http://www.suffolk.nhs.uk/Home/Services/PalliativeCare/Tools.aspx

It explains what palliative care is; provides contacts and links to other local service providers such as St Elizabeth Hospice and St Nicholas Hospice Care; local news and events; education; tools; frequently asked questions and links to national web sites. August 2011
donated 100 The tools section provides information for families on the Gold Standard Framework end of life pathway, patient information on Its never too late.. cardio pulmonary resuscitation as well as the yellow folder record alert system which contains the patient held records. It also provides the advance care plan documents, which promote a holistic approach to end of life care where Family Carers and the cared for, with the help of health and social care professionals, can plan ahead for those with a life limiting illness.

Preferred Priorities for Care (PPC) is a simple but comprehensive form that anyone can complete at anytime. It offers the opportunity for discussion about issues personal to them but including those close to them and to have those sometimes difficult conversations. Anyone completing a PPC can express where they might like to be cared for and where they would ideally like to be when they die, whether they want to see a friend or relative theyve not seen for a long time or a request to be christened. The PPC is not a legal document and should families need to discuss the Advance Decision to Refuse Treatment (ADRT) and/or the Lasting Power of Attorney for health and welfare they would need to seek further advice from a health or social care professional, or solicitor. For those Family Carers and cared for living in Waveney, the Great Yarmouth and Waveney PCT website www.gywpct.nhs.uk provides current information on the palliative care provision in this area of Suffolk.

Support Group

The Ipswich Support Group meets at the Key on the 2nd Wednesday of the month in the afternoons and is going from strength to strength with the help of our volunteers, Joy and Mary! They run a packed programme of visiting speakers and activities and back in September had an extremely entertaining talk and poetry reading by Jean Lazaruswho writes her own poems and has lived and worked in the area for many years. Particularly clever and interesting was her poem about her career at Footman Pretty, a large department store in Ipswich which was replaced by Debenhamswhere she continued to work until her retirement. Unfortunately we havent the space to print the entire poem as it runs to 16 versesbut here is just a taster!
When tights were invented they said theyll never catch on The leg men wont like them but they were proved wrong Worn with mini skirts were all the rage And a good cover-up for any old age. I worked for Pretty Polly 7 years before redundancy came, I was needed no more. One day the Pretty Polly Rep. said to me But Footmans, now Debenhams, said If a hosiery Consultant I would like to be come back to us Jean One per cent commission was the and for the past fifteen years thats incentive you see where Ive been. A fabulous sum, I had to agree. When I was young and in my prime And had a little extra time To get some money in the kitty I took a job with Footman Pretty. Miss Clark, the buyer, took me in hand Behind a counter I had to stand. Socks and stockings in neat array Were the items on display.

Our Carers Kitchen is NOW OPEN and looking FANTASTIC. It provides a bright oasis in front of the Garrett Anderson Centre at Ipswich Hospital. Our wonderful volunteers are there to offer an invigorating cuppa and biscuit, a sympathetic and understanding ear and to provide information on services available to Family Carers. I am the Volunteer Link Co-ordinator, working at Ipswich Hospital Carers Kitchen in partnership with Suffolk Family Carers. This is a new and exciting role and I love it. I have been recruited by Suffolk Family Carers to look after our team of amazing volunteers who do so much for the Family Carers at Ipswich Hospital. My role is to support and to provide training for our team of volunteers and to ensure that they feel valued and cared for. After all, we could not keep our Kitchen running without our volunteers! Our aim is to open the Carers Kitchen daily with two volunteers per shift. The morning shift runs from 10am to 1pm and the afternoon shift is 1pm to 4pm. We are currently looking to increase our team of volunteers and if you feel you are able to offer three hours of your time on a day that suits you, we would be delighted to hear from you. Bixley Ward Pamper Carers Day

Councillor Russell Harsant talking to Family Carers

Due to funding constraints we had been unable to provide Moving & Handling tuition since the beginning of 2011. But we are delighted to announce that .......

In September Family Carers in the Bixley Ward area of Ipswich had a well deserved Pamper Day! The day included yoga and meditation sessions, therapies and a chance to get to know and talk to other Family Carers from the area. Family Carers were also able to have an NHS Health Check which included a free cholesterol test which was a benefit to many Family Carers who attended. We would like to thank Cllr Russell Harsant who funded this day from his Locality Budget. We would also like to thank all our volunteer therapists who supported us during the day without you this day would not have been possible! Many local businesses also supported us by donating products such as tea, coffee and elderflower cordial along with many other local Suffolk products thank you! A huge thank you to Colleen and Hilary who volunteered to help us on the day and served our refreshments. Colleen and Hilary are two of our willing band of volunteers at Suffolk Family Carers, who help in all sorts of ways. Suffolk Family Carers Caf (Hill View Business Park, Claydon) supplied the cakes and sandwiches which went down very well indeed! One Family Carer who attended said It was a most relaxing and enjoyable experience, thank you.

World mental health day 10th Oct

Monday 10th October, saw the Ipswich VASP ( Voluntary and Statutory Partnership), Art On The Move and The Lifting Spirits singing group take on Ipswich Town to raise awareness and break down stigma around mental health. Suffolk Family Carers Mental Health Team had a wellbeing shop in Tower Ramparts where shoppers could pop in and pick up information about looking after their physical and mental health, have a full health check from Health Smart and go on to have a taster session of reflexology or Zero Balancing (a relaxing/ massaging technique). Those interested also picked up tips and CDs to help them relax and improve their breathing. Once people had finished in the wellbeing shop they were free to browse the fantastic free art exhibition organised by Art On The Move (a self help art group). The exhibition had some really thought provoking pieces. The grand finale came with Lifting Spirits Flash Mob: approximately 70 wonderful voices sprang into song in Ipswich Library and the Buttermarket shopping centre, wowing a stunned audience, who, of course, in true Flash Mob tradition either joined in or stood looking bewildered! You can view the Flash Mob by going onto You Tube and searching Ipswich Flash Mob. Look out for yourselves, Family Carers. Please help break down stigma in mental health by registering your support on the Time To Change website: http://www.time-to-change.org.uk

Suffolk Family Carers Transitions Team works with

Young Adult Carers aged 16-24. On Saturday 8th October we took 10 Young Adult Carers sailing for a full day with the East Anglian Sailing Trust. None of the group had been sailing before. It was an exciting day out for a group of young people who spend much of their time looking after other members of their family. We were divided into two groups and each group went on a 32 foot yacht and we sailed from Levington Marina. The first thing was to get the kettle on, and we learned all about sailing while drinking cups of tea. It was then time to set off and we sailed from Levington to Ipswich, then back past Levington, to Felixstowe and Harwich and out to sea. It was such a great day out and was thoroughly enjoyed by all! Thank you to The Suffolk Foundation (Bluebell Fund) who funded the trip, and to the East Anglian Sailing Trust who were excellent! This is what some of the Young Adult Carers had to say: It was so totally awesome we had a good laugh Great day, great tutor on the boat, just a brilliant day from start to finish 10/10 Amaaaaaazing!!! Steering n tacking was awesome!!! Really enjoyed it today. Thank you so much

Do you know any Young Carers or are there any in your family?
Could you pass this message on to your children or anyone with an interest in carers and the schools system?
Id like to introduce myself as the new schools worker for Suffolk Young Carers: most of you will know me already because Ive been working as a support & advocacy worker at the project for over 4 years. Id really like to hear from you about your experiences as a Young Carer at your school. Maybe your school is fantasticunderstands the issues Young Carers face, does everything it can to support you in a sensitive way..if thats the case tell me and I can pass on the word to other schools across the county. Or perhaps the opposite is trueyour school doesnt understand your needs, or doesnt even know youre a Young Carer, and to be honest could do better!!!!! Whatever the situation is-good or bad-Id love to hear about your experiences. I want the schools project to make a difference to all of you, and it can only do that if I know whats happening in your school to you! So if you want to get your point of view across, or tell me something your school does well, or could do better, heres how: Leave a message for me on: 01473 835462 Call/ text me on: 07900 608 164 (and save money as well). Email me: claire.fraser@suffolklfamilycarers.org Snail mail:Claire Fraser-Lim (F), FREEPOST NATE853, Ipswich. Outreach Groups
What has been happening in my local area?
Every month Family Carers across rural Suffolk meet up for an afternoon away from their caring roles. As well as enjoying the company of people who truly understand what it is like to be a Family Carer, it provides the opportunity to find out information and take part in activity taster sessions. Over the past few months at Outreach we have learned how to relax as well as improve our posture through the art of Tai Chi. We have also had talks and demonstrations by an Occupational Therapist about safe moving and handling techniques to protect the safety of both us as Family Carers and the person we care for. Thanks to all Family Carers who helped in the demonstrations by being moved and handled especially those who volunteered to do so as newbies to the group. Most of us were lucky enough to have experienced the joys of Gongs by listening to their soothing sounds, as well as getting the chance to literally feel the music, by standing in a singing bowl and experiencing the vibrations it creates when it is played! The majority of our Outreaches have enjoyed the ever popular mini pamper events being relaxed by Reflexology, calmed with Hot Stone Therapy and unperturbed by Indian Head Massage. This year Family Carers were able to enjoy a manicure from a member of staff, as well as get the opportunity to speak to workers from organisations such as Crossroads Care, Parkinsons UK and the Rural Coffee Caravan. It is important to note that due to funding alterations there will be some changes in the running of Outreaches which will mean you will have more freedom to shape your group in a way that is tailored to group wants and needs. We will be writing to all Family Carers who attend the Outreach Groups and informing the attendees how they can be actively part of making bigger and better Outreach groups that are steered centrally by Family Carers. If you would like to join us at future Outreaches at any one of our locations across Suffolk you are more than welcome- we always like to see new faces. For more information please call our Information Line on 0844 225 3099.
