The CAS (Creativity Action Service) (Work-Study) Program is a Iundamental part oI the JCIB curriculum. This program takes seriously the importance oI liIe outside the world oI the classroom by providing a reIreshing counterbalance to the academic selI-absorption required by a demanding school program. The goal oI educating the whole person and encouraging young people to share their energies and special talents while developing awareness, concern, and ability to work cooperatively with others is essential in today`s competitive environment.
Each Junior and Senior at JCIB completing the CAS Program will participate in community service/volunteer activities over a two-year period.
The Iocus oI the activities should center on these Iollowing eight learning outcomes: Learning Outcomes: 1. Increased awareness of your strengths and areas for growth 2. Undertaking new challenges 3. Dear Parent:
Your son/daughter has indicated an interest in the CAS Mentorship Program offered by the 1efferson County International Baccalaureate School and sponsored by the agency listed below.
A student should work a minimum of three hours each Monday during the semester.
The parent will be required to provide an excuse for a student`s absence from work-study on any given Monday.
A student`s acceptance into the program is contingent upon the approval of the student`s parents or guardian.
Parents/ Guardians of the student who participates in the work-study program must assume full responsibility for liability and any cost of the program (travel to and from the work-study site).

RULES AND RESPONSIBLITIES OF THE STUDENT VOLUNTEER
1. A student should work a minimum oI three hours each Monday during the semester.
2. The student volunteer is responsible Ior: a) knowing agency rules and regulations b) being Iamiliar with all saIety regulations and procedures c) reporting to work in a timely manner d) perIorming all work assigned e) giving prior notice iI unable to attend volunteer work-study
3. The student is not to miss his/her volunteer work-study except Ior the Iollowing reasons: a) illness b) examinations c) approved school Iunctions (must be approved by Angela Belrose, IB Coordinator)
4. The student volunteer is to perIorm his/her work-study Ior at least one semester beIore changing to another work study position. Mentors should advise the school in the event that the student is not perIorming his or her duties in a satisIactory Iashion.

Thank you for offering our student the opportunity to work with your organization to complete their CAS (Creativity/Action/Service) internship requirement for the International Baccalaureate Diploma. The following rules and responsibilities have been established for the benefit of the CAS (Work-Study) Mentor:
1. The agency should uphold a statement of assurance that student volunteers will not be used to replace or decrease use of the paid staff.
2. The agency has the responsibility of providing the student with: a. The organization`s rules and regulations b. Safety standards and emergency procedures c. Facilities available for volunteer use d. Supplies, equipment, and materials e. Record keeping and reports f. Description of the agency g. Agency structure h. Assigned work space or area i. Benefits to volunteers j. Volunteer recognition and awards (optional) k. Policies of confidentiality of client information
3. Specific procedures should be outlined for training and supervising volunteer and for evaluating student performance. 4. Provisions should be made for maintaining an attendance log in order to report each student`s attendance at the end of the semester. You will be contacted by e-mail for verification of the student's attendance. Any absence should be reported to the Work-Study Coordinator at the 1efferson County International Baccalaureate School (1CIB). Christine George, cgeorgejefcoed.com, 205-379-5356 5. The agency has the right to discharge a student volunteer if he or she does not keep the commitment made between the student, school coordinator, and the agency. Please advise the Work-Study coordinator or the IB Coordinator, Angela Belrose, at 1CIB if there is a problem. 6. Students who express interest in changing volunteer assignments for constructive reasons should be allowed to do so only after consultation with the school coordinator and agency mentor. 7. The agency has the responsibility to notify the school coordinator of any termination of student volunteer assignments. 8. Agency mentors are expected to follow the criteria relative to student volunteering as established by the 1efferson County Board of Education. 9. The agency has the responsibility to understand the objectives of the CAS Mentorship Program and the roles, rights, and responsibilities of the student, the school, and its own organization.
