Table 1. Standby generator maintenance checklist.

Maintenance Frequency
Component Action Bi-
Weekly Monthly Annually
Annually
Run generator with no load for several
minutes until operating temperature is
X
achieved; verify control function and look
for alarms, warnings, or indicator lights.
Inspect engine, radiator, and generator for
debris, as well as for loose or broken X
fittings, hoses, wires, and guards.
Electric Generator
Run the system for 1 hour under a full
building load initiated by ATS. Record
the system operating parameters (e.g.,
X
coolant temperature, oil pressure, battery
voltage, and generator alternating current
voltage).
Perform load bank test. X
Fuel System Check fuel tank to assure levels are
adequate and, if present, drain water from X
filter bowl.
Assure there are no fuel or other fluid
X
leaks.
Inspect accessible areas of fuel tank for
damage and corrosion. Verify that
X
emergency vent components move freely
and are not obstructed (all tanks) .
Replace fuel filter(s). X
Inspect fuel hose, replace if necessary. X
Check oil level and inspect system
X
components for leakage.
Sample oil. X
Grease generator bearing (if applicable). X
Lubrication System
Replace oil and oil filter (based on oil
sample results) and inspect system X
components.
Replace engine oil hoses if necessary. X
Inspect hoses and belts, replacing if
needed, and verify that the engine block X
heater is operating properly.
Check engine coolant level. X
Check coolant lines and connections. X
Check coolant condition with kit/test
Cooling System X
strip, replace if needed.
Inspect and adjust belts, verify engine
block heater is operating, check radiator
cap (replace cap if gasket is cracked or
X
damaged), clean exterior of radiator,
inspect fan shroud, and inspect system
components.
Starting System Assure that the generator is in “Auto”
X
mode for automatic start-up.
Clean battery connections and apply
corrosion inhibitor. Check starter motor
X
and charger connections and inspect
system components.
Check battery electrolyte level and
X
specific gravity.
Inspect and clean engine speed timing X
sensor.
Perform visible emissions observation. X
Clean crankcase breather and inspect
X
Exhaust System system components.
Inspect exhaust system, muffler, and
X
exhaust pipe.
Check that the generator’s circuit breaker
X
is closed.
Clean out electrical boxes, panels, and
Electrical System X
alarm boxes. Inspect wiring.
Inspect and clean ATS contacts and
X
wiring.
Inspect air intake system. Replace filter if
Air Intake System X
needed.
Record all run hours. Upon activity completion
System Document all maintenance activities in
