Splicing Instructions for covered ropes
➢ Preparing the rope for splicing
Before beginning the splicing, measure
the desired length of the rope eye and
mark with the use of tape.
Approx. 1m will be used for
the core rope splicing
Also, apart from the eye length,
consider approx. 1m for the length to
be spliced.

Α sleeve is recommended to be
used for the future protection
of the splicing area.
Pass the protective sleeve
through the rope, after
the point of the tape
marking.
After the protection sleeve is
passed, a length of the jacket
will be cut in order to splice the
core rope.
protective sleeve for
the splicing area
With the use of a knife, start
carefully cutting the edge of the
jacket and remove it as shown
below.
Page 3
Splicing Instructions for covered ropes
From the taped point,
measure approx. 0,5m, in
order to start cutting the
cover.
Be very careful to cut only the
jacket and not damage the core
rope.
Remove the cut jacket completely from the ending side of the rope.

After the removal of the jacket, a
second sleeve in needed for the
protection of the new rope eye.
Unjacketed core rope
The positioning of the protection
sleeve shall be at the area of the
rope eye.
After the positioning of the sleeve the
braiding of the remaining jacket inside
the core rope will take place.
Unbraid the 32-strand
jacket and spread the
rope yarns.

➢ Splicing of the core rope
After spreading the rope yarns, start packing the
edges with tape.
Totally we will need 6 packs as shown below.
These packed rope
yarns will be inserted
in the construction of
the core rope.

From the point of the unbraided jacket
measure 6 double strands on the core rope
and tape the specific point.
Having in mind the desired eye length, start
from the end of the length and measure 10
double strands.

Tape the start and end of the measured 12
strands.

From the taped point cut the
remaining core rope length and
start unbraiding.
Take out and separate all double
strands of S and Z twist.
Tape the edges of the strand pairs.

First insertion of the S twist strands
Have in mind that for every two double
strands, there will be one insertion as
shown below.
After the insertion of the S twist double
strands, overturn the rope (180o) in
order to begin the insertion of the Z
twist strands.
Page 9
Splicing Instructions for covered ropes
First insertion of the Ζ twist strands
Each double strand of Z twist should pass
through each double strand of S twist.
After the insertion of the double strands of Z
twist, overturn the rope (180o).

Second insertion of the S twist strands
For the second insertion, it is easier
to pass through the S double strands
with the use of a splicing fid.
Pass the strands
inside the splicing fid
and pull from the
other side.

Second insertion of the Z twist strands
After finishing the insertion, it’s time to
oversplice the jacket packed edges inside the
spliced core.

➢ Splicing the jacket
For this procedure, each jacket pack will be
inserted completely before starting the
next one.
Pass each of the 6
jacket packed rope
yarns inside the
double strands.

yarns that have
passed through the
double strands.
After three insertions, begin passing the next
jacket pack.

be inserted through
the double strands.

jacket pack.
After the insertion of
the second jacket
pack, overturn the
rope.
Start with the
insertion of the next
jacket pack.
Page 14

All jacket packs will pass through three
double strands of the core rope.
When finished, the
remaining edges of
the spliced strands
will have to be
removed

➢ Cutting the remaining ends - Finishing
After cutting all the remaining strand edges, the
protective sleeves will be placed.
Page 16

The two sleeves will be connected with whipping around their edges.
For the whipping you will need a twine of approx. 1,5m
length.
Start with a loop of twine across the rope.
With the working end of the twine, make multiple wraps
around the rope from the tail end toward the apex of the
loop.
Insert the working end of the twine through the loop. Pull
the tail of the twine until the loop becomes no longer
visible. Clip the ends close to the whipping
