THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT

How does the sun warm the earth?

When the sun`s radiation reaches the atmosphere some radiation is reIlected back into the space but
some also is absorbed by the Earth planet.

What is the Greenhouse EIIect?
The heat inside the Earth is radiated outward and absorbed by gases called 'greenhouse gases that
are in the atmosphere. This allows us to have the heat needed in order to live and also prevents heat
Irom disappearing oI the space.

What are the Greenhouse Gases and what do they have to do with Global Warming?

1. Carbon Dioxide

2. Methane

3. Nitrous Oxide

4. Other

Where do each oI the Greenhouse Gases come Irom?

1. Aerosols

2. Cars

3. Factories

4. Waste Dumps

Why is the earth getting warmer?

All the human activities named above that contaminate earth make the 'Greenhouse blanket thicker
because oI the excess oI CO2 use, lack oI plants, etc. This makes all the heat stay inside the earth and
produce global warming.

Global Warming EIIects.

1.The rising sea levels take away habitats Irom some plants and animals, Iurther worsening the
eIIects on the atmosphere since plants and trees absorb the CO2 gases and protect us.

2. Species Extinction occur in the RainIorest because oI increased temperatures and decrease in soil
water, leading to lesser carriyng capacities Ior some habitats such as rivers and lakes and through
that there will be less animals.

3. Reductions in Sea ice as the heat Irom the sun inside the earth melts all these. This also causes an
extinction oI polar bears and diverse animals that live in the polar regions.

4. By the middle oI the century climate change will reduce water sources, leading to water shortages
in developing countries such as parts oI aIrica.

Look at the list oI Global Warming EIIects and List the 3 that you Iind most disturbing and explain
why.

The Artic ice is rapidly disappearing and might cause a lack oI water to the planet Earth. Without
water living things can`t survive (plants, animals, humans).

Large scale Iood shortages could lead to catastrophic eIIects on wildliIe.

Natural disasters such as heat waves and hurricanes are caused by global warming and these can
easily destroy big communities.
SMOG.

Where did the word smog come Irom?
Comes Irom a term Iirst used in the 1900 to describe a mixture oI smoke and Iog.
What is smog?
Is air pollution that reduces visibility.

What is photochemical smog?
Is produced when sunlight reacts with nitrogen oxides and at least one VOC in the atmosphere.

Where do these come Irom?
Nitrogen Oxides: car exhaust, coal power plants, Iactory emmisions, gasoline, paints, cleaning
solvents.

What is ground-level ozone?
Smog.

What are the bad health eIIects oI ground level ozone?
Can damage the lung tissues and is especially bad Ior people with respiratory conditions such as
asthma.

What are some ways that smog can be reduced?
Try not to use transportation devices. Instead, walk.
Avoid products that release high levels oI VOCs.
Fuel up during the cooler hours oI the day, night or early morning.
