We are pleased to announce the next three Israeli artists
in residence who are all part oI our ongoing Israeli
exchange program. The selected artists are Maya Zack,
Gal Weinstein, and Andi Arnovitz. Each artist will
participate in a 7 to 14 day residency in the Los Angeles
area. The purpose oI the JAI artist Exchange 2010/2011
is to expose contemporary Israeli culture- as expressed
through the Iine arts.
In the Iall oI 2009, The Jewish Artists Initiative (JAI) oI
Southern CaliIornia launched a major expansion oI its
programming generously Iunded by the Jewish
Community Foundation oI Los Angeles. The artist in
residency program establishes cultural bridges and
expands the discourse between Jewish artists Irom Los
Angeles and Israel. These conversations include the
exploration oI Jewish identity as experienced by both
American and Israeli artists.
Maya Zack: Residency November 7- 14, 2010
2000 Bezalel graduate Maya Zack already boasts an impressive Iilmography and catalog
oI worldwide Iilm screenings, solo exhibitions, and awards. A Irequent lecturer at Bezalel
Academy and the Tel Aviv University Department oI Film and Television, Zack is
currently best known Ior her award-winning short Iilm Mother Economy`. This
masterIul twenty-minute work, selected Irom 500 submissions as the winner oI the
Celeste Art Prize during the 2008 Berlin Video Art Festival, is a contemporary
exploration oI issues oI Jewish identity, cultural memory, and emotions.
Gal Weinstein: Residency Spring of 2011
Born in 1970, Weinstein is one oI the leading
artists oI his generation. He Irequently uses
common materials such as clay, steel wool,
carpeting, rooIing, and plastic to create room size
installations. His work oIten deals with landscape
and boundaries. Weinstein represented Israel in
2002 at the Sao Paulo Biennial in Brazil,
participated in 2005 at the The New Hebrews at
the Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin, had a solo show
at Huarte Contemporary Art Centre, Pamplona,
Spain in 2007 and at the Helena Rubinstein
Pavilion oI the Tel Aviv Museum oI Art in 2005.
Andi Arnovitz: Residency Fall 2011
Arnovitz creates etchings, monoprints and silk-screens, manipulating
the paper, sewing and Iolding her prints, which oIten suggests layers oI
images built up over time. In her own words she is "constantly drawing on
the inspiration oI living in Jerusalem."
Arnovitz immigrated to Israel in
1999. She has a BFA in graphic design
Irom Washington University, St.
Louis. She worked as the Art Director
Ior advertising agencies in New York
City and Atlanta. She also studied
printmaking in Atlanta and started to
work intensively with this technique
ten years ago. She has exhibited at the
Jerusalem Print Workshop; at the
Artspace Gallery in Jerusalem; in Tel
Aviv, Israel; as well as Barcelona,
Spain; Paris, France; Lahti, Finland;
SoIia, Bulgaria; and Czestochowa, Warsaw, Myslowice and Kalisz, Poland.
Each exchange provides opportunities Ior the Jewish Community to interact with an
Israeli artist on both a personal and proIessional level. Our programming will include
Shabbat dinners, inIormal gatherings, art workshops, and artist talks. These events will
allow Ior the interchange oI ideas, techniques, and experiences. By acting as ambassadors
Zack, Weinstein, and Arnovitz will provide participants with a positive, Iirsthand
experience oI Israeli culture. This artists exchange program will also have a broad impact
on the community as it will establish a greater awareness oI the variety and range oI
contemporary Israeli art.
